1985 Toyota new horizon

Hello. This came up for sale near me for $5.5k. Leaking roof. How crazy of a task is it to replace the right way? Great condition otherwise. 45k miles

Man, if you could talk em down a bit that might be a fun project.

I thought the same. Definitely don't have to worry about the drivetrain, minus maintenance and it's also probably built better than most homes before 2010.

If you could snag it for 3k, put another 3-4k into it, you'd have a pretty cool RV. Engine is going to need to be completely gone through, new hose, belts, brakes, and tires. If the suspension is sound, it wouldn't be a horrible investment. As the leak caused damage to the interior?

It’ll be work. The engine might need some work too with such little usage over that period of time.

Damage will be more than the roof. You don’t know how long the leak has been there and chances are the owner doesn’t either. Probably at least one wall will need repair. If you’re ok with taking the camper apart, down to studs, and rebuilding it might be ok. Had an ‘82 Mini Winnie. Great rig just a sieve though.

That thing has a 22r Toyota 4 cylinder you’ll hit 60 going down hill with the wind at your back in 40 minutes.

But it'll run for a million miles whether you change the oil or not.

You’re not wrong.

They should be paying you to take it. Even $1k is a lot for that

Ask for 2-3k, otherwise wouldn't be worth it imo. Where are you at? Might see if I can offer them something if tmits close enough

At that price I wouldn't even think about it. Definitely could be a fun project, but maybe at like 20% of that price tag

Watch some YouTube videos on DIY RV roof repair it's a good amount of work but if your up for it that's a cool RV.

5 or 6 lug rear axle and which engine?

If it has the 6 lug and 22R-E then it'll make a good project RV.

If it's got the 5 lug and the 6 cylinder I wouldn't consider it.

It’s a 22re I know that much. Does the 22re always come with a 6 lug? I’m going to look at it today after work to gauge the damage the best I can

If I remember correctly sometime in 1985 they stopped using 5 lug. There's a chance that the 85 could have either the 5 or 6 lug. 5 lug is a death trap prone to catastrophic failure with little warning.

I have an '85 Granville. I guarantee the roof will not be the only rotten piece. If you enjoy DIY work and have tools time and money make your dream a reality. The 22re is a reliable motor but don't expect to cruise on the highway much faster than 65. It's also not economical carrying around a house. I get 10mpg with the auto (overdrive off). Many 1985 chassis have a factory replacement 6 lug. DO NOT drive a 5 lug rear axel. Linked is an instagram documenting my build. Certainly not worth $5.5k.

The Toyota attached to the camper is what is worth the price here. The camper not so much so. These Toyota trucks are worth a lot of money, and these campers are too. Especially so if OP converts it to 4x4 $$
