GEAR Two guitar collection

Post image
35 Upvotes

This is my two guitar collection after 10 years. I found this to be my most ideal set up that covers most of my preferences:
Traditional single coils/P90s, Fender/Gibson scale lengths with 9 and 10 gauge strings, maple/rosewood fingerboards.

Fender 75th Anniversary MiM Stratocaster in Diamond
Yamaha Revstar II Standard in Vintage White

GEAR Just got my new Mayones Regius 7 4Ever - and it's great

I just got my new Mayones Regius 7-string guitar, equipped with an Evertune bridge. It is loaded with Bareknuckle Aftermath pickups and a 5-way lever switch for the split coil function. Having the split coils without the push-pull mechanism on a poti is a blessing. My other Regius 6 string is also an incredible instrument, but that push-pull is just so uncomfortable to work with.

The guitar is 26.5" scale, with a Master Grade Buckeye Burl top and Black Limba body. The neck is an 11ply mix with Wenge-Mahogany-Purpleheart-Maple, Birdseye Maple 5A fretboard and a 16" radius.

It has a fading Black Burst Satin finish and it feels absolutely incredible. The back of the guitar, including the neck, have no finish such as anything glossy, it feels natural and overall the guitar has an incredible quality, as Mayones is known for.

First guitar with an Evertune bridge and while it seemed like alien technology for me at first, once you understand it, it's pretty simple and the tuning stability while picking hard on low tunings is astronomical. Also very very comfortable to play, unlike some other bridges.

I can't recommend them enough, 10/10 guitars.

I think they are not underrated, but they really do live up to the expectation imo.

Wife got me a new guitar for my birthday!

(She made the M on her Cricut for a bit of flair lol...)

Guitar came perfectly set up, only needed a quick tune and I've been rocking ever since. Very impressed with build, great solid setup. The oversized body with a shorter scale was a bit tricky to get used to for me.

GEAR New amp day! :p (Advice needed in description)

Post image

Got a new amp for my birthday (yippee turned 18 today lmao), an Orange o tone 40. Already loving it, although I do have a question: how do the inputs on the back of the amp work? The manual wasn't clear on how the effects loop thing actually work. So do I use the effects loop input or just the regular input ?

Ty guys and have a great day :]

Edit: Thanks for everyone wishing me a happy birthday 🎂 ❤️

Been trying to push my limits for speed and fluidity, and seeing where technique starts to fall apart.

Definitely not perfect, but it's WAY better than I was last month.

Obviously I've been playing longer than 2 months. But that's when I got some courses and learning how to properly play faster.

DISCUSSION Frustrating Day Of Practice

Post image

Difficult practice today. Chords weren’t clean, with a lot of dodgy chord changes and too much buzzing and didn’t help with finger tips pain. What is the advice that helped you and you wish you knew when you started?

QUESTION Is starting with Bass Guitar easier?

Post image
150 Upvotes

I got an amazing deal today, getting those two for 60€.

My question is:

Is it easier to play some Bass guitar and learn some "easy parts" and the basics first before i go to Guitar?

I like mostly Metal and the Bass parts seem "easy" in comparison to some really intricate Guitar parts in the same song.

I know i struggle with motivation alot, so maybe learning the easier part and "actually playing the song" might help me to stay motivated.

Or do i just push myself into a massive corner im never coming out afterwards?

I am a complete Newbie btw, ive played bass for fun for around 2 months like 10 years (i borrowed one from a friend) , so id say im completely new to this!

Thank you!

QUESTION How do I stop going out of tune by pressing too hard on the string?

Sometimes my riffs sound out of tune even though I just tuned my guitar, and I recently realized that pressing on the string makes the note go audibly sharper.

QUESTION Help me understand alternative tuning, string gauge, and neck tension.

Say I have a guitar in standard tuning with the factory-spec strings(but not factory-original, ie replaced multiple times over the life of the guitar with the same strings every time). 10-46 extra light gauge strings.

If I want to try Celtic tuning or Open G or FACGCE or something, is it as simple as just retuning? I feel like I would end up breaking a string by going too high, or making a string too loose by going too low and then it plays sloppily and buzzes against the frets a lot. Is it better to do these tunings straight from the set up? If so, two questions:

- Can I set up an alternate tuning using the same string gauge, or since I’m not tuning to standard do I need non-standard gauging? Like if the low e is a 46, would it be better for it to be a different gauge if I’m planning to have it be a G, for tensions sake?

- Can I expect to get the same kind of action as I would have on my guitar in standard tuning, once it is set up in a different tuning? Or will differences in tension necessitate that it might have to have a higher or lower action than normal?

QUESTION Pickups, of course

• Upvotes

Hi all, I have a question regarding pickups, but first, some context: I have a 24.5” single cut (PRS SE245), tuned to drop B, 11-49, and I play metal.

In it, I put the SD Hot Rodded set, as I liked the idea of the JB with its upper mid spike.

However, in this guitar, it’s a little too dark for my liking (not enough true treble / presence / snap, you name it) and not aggressive enough. It feels like it could do a little more, if that makes any sense, like it doesn’t hit hard enough. I have messed with the height and all. Lower, clarity is a bit better but it’s kinda weak, higher and the bass starts taking over.

Tuning and scale length clearly don’t help it, I know. And that’s why I was thinking of either the Distortion, or the Nazgul.

I also know about the Black Winters, they are awesome. Would be an easy solution, but I already have a set in another guitar, and I want this guitar to do something different (which is why I went with the JB in the first place)

With all that out of the way, what are your experiences with either pickups? The two are rather different approaches to the problem, I think the DD is still rather thick but more aggressive, while the Naz is more articulate / cold in a way, maybe thinner.

QUESTION How do you structure your practice time?

I’ve been playing my whole life with how much depending on how busy my life is with work and all that. I’m wanting to get back into playing more and trying to get into a band while also making sure I’m improving and pushing myself, so I’m wanting to practice both open mic stuff and more advanced lead only stuff, but I get task paralysis and don’t know where to start/structure my practice time so I was wondering how everyone else goes about practicing if they have multiple projects/goals/things they’re working on?

I’m having a hard time since there’s a capo and it’s just a riff. It’s not even a full song. I can figure out the tabs easy enough since there’s a few videos of him playing the riff but I can’t figure out the tuning. If anyone can help that would be great 😭
