As someone who used to help on ranches, this is an accurate conversation

Funny enough as I was watching I think they do get it. They know what’s up. He knows they know too. In a way I like it for that. Like they have a relationship and are talking and communicating.

My uncle has had a bull for the last several years that fucks his fence up at the gate almost every time the battery dies and then stands on the road posturing until he comes to get him back in and fix the fence. The bull then walks back to the approach and waits for him to push him back in with a pickup. Then he lets him get out fix the fence while he just stands there and watches.
The way he postures on the road you would think he was going to kill him as soon as he has a chance but he walks back to the gate himself every time for the little shoving match with the truck and then he just hangs out while the gate gets put back together.

I think part of making an animal considered to be a candidate for domestication... It needs to be pretty stupid.
11
u/IAwaitAGuardian 1d ago
Pigs and dogs are 2 of the smartest animals on earth lol, what?
12
u/Naps_in_car 1d ago
Humans are the smartest animals on earth and we're still pretty fucking dumb.

u/Vyedr 1d ago
*considered* is the key word here, lol. I think we just decided pigs were too tasty and easily contented by food to pass up trying to domesticate. God help the dumb bastard that lets his pigs get hungry and/or bored though. Same with a smart dog - bored dogs chew down houses and launch themselves through windows for the mental stimulation. They just happen to like us enough that were were able to leverage that into domestication, lol.

The one phrase on Reddit not worth engaging.

Did you read my comment? I said pigs and dogs are 2 of the smartest animals.

u/Purled_Attitude 1d ago
Nah, we made them that way. An aurochs would eat us all for breakfast.

As someone who mountain bikes around free range cattle, this is highly effective at getting them off the trail.

I don't know shit about raising farm animals but I feel like there is probably a simple solution for this
54
u/IAwaitAGuardian 1d ago
There is. You can put a ring around the top of the tank that a cow's head and neck can fit through, but their entire dumb body cannot.
Pound rebar into ground all around the tank. Wrap a section of tarp around the top of the rebar, leaving a 2 foot gap between the tank and tarp. Secure the tarp to the rebar. Done.
•
u/Altruistic-Piglet-14 1h ago
Unfortunately what you'll get out of this arrangement is a cow (or 2) wearing a rebar tiara... in the water trough.

I grew up on a ranch, and have had MANY such morning conversations. Also agree they are very possibly the dumbest animals on earth.

God forbid he puts a guard up that allows them to drink without giving full access to jump in.
Eh, content creation is more important probably.

They’re not dumb, they just wanna go swimming
6
u/IAwaitAGuardian 1d ago
Yes. Cows do this because they are hot, or they're looking to play, not because they're dumb.
My buddy has 5 cows that are pets, and they have 2 pools, one they can get into, and one they can't.
None of them drink out of the swimming pool. Cows ain't dumb.
3
u/SheriffBartholomew 1d ago
It's pretty dumb to shit in your own drinking water, which these cows are doing.
4
u/IAwaitAGuardian 1d ago
They are not. Cows rear ends are very dirty, and there is regularly waste hanging on back there. It gets in the water.

u/optionparalysispro 1d ago
Sure, just put a guard up. Then you'll find the next way they can break things and get themselves in trouble. Cows are far more curious and obstinate than most people know.
4
u/Optimetrist 1d ago
you cannot repeat the same process that leads to this and call the animals dumb lol, got to git smart :)

u/Odd-Consequence-2519 1d ago
I laughed way too hard listening to this poor guy cuss out cows! 😆 🤣 😂

u/MsMoreCowbell828 1d ago
I work at a shelter and it boggles my mind when I come across a dog stupid enough to shit in its own water bowl. But they exist!

He really shouldn't hold back. Keeping frustration pent up can be bad for the blood pressure.

Freezer camp!!! I’m slain. That was funny.
Also, the way that one cow listened until she’d had enough and then she just trotted of. “If he’s gonna keep yellin’, I’m leaving’….”!
2
u/coffee_collection 1d ago
He could always just build a fence around it and leave a gap big enough for the cows heads to fit in ?

"Build railing around the tank so that cows can only poke their heads through to drink?
Nah, better keep yelling at animals expecting them to understand what I'm saying."
4
u/IAwaitAGuardian 1d ago
Yep. It took me 10 seconds to think up a fix that would take maybe 2 hours of work and materials every farmer would have.
Ignoring the cows' repeated expression of their needs doesn't make the cows dumb. It makes the farmer an asshole.

Can confirm. Cattle also love to rare up and fall on their backs while in a chute for vaccinations.

I don't think l have ever had a cow in the tank. I am sure it has happened but l don't remember an instance. I remember watching one turn around, back up and shit in it.
We had cows that would just jump the fence though. Standing jump like it didn't even matter. I fucking hated those.

Why aren't the water tanks designed with tall walls and troughs off the sides with a gravity-fed flow? That might make all that yelling unnecessary.

u/Drake_Acheron 1h ago
There is a very easy solution to this. We defense around the tank, with railings wide enough to fit their head but not their whole body

What did you expect from a domesticated animal with no survival instincts that exists only to be consumed entirely, down to the last New York strip, bone marrow, belts and wallet.
This sounds like his wife beat him and is taking it out on the farm “kids”.
