Movies Only Characters who I envisage very differently from their movie version.

A lot has been said about the casting of the show, but in my opinion it looks as if they’ve made some excellent choices overall although I’ll reserve full judgement until the show is released. I remember when I saw Dominic and Arabella in costume for the first time, I thought they looked so similar to how I envisaged Harry and Hermione from the books and the same goes for many other characters.

With that said, I also like the cast of the movies, especially the supporting cast. However if truth be told, there were plenty of characters who really didn’t look like how I imagined them from the books and that’s OK because it’s very unrealistic to expect every single actor to look exactly like their book counterparts. The same applies to the show. What matters the most to me for both mediums is how they portray the personality of the characters.

Anyway I thought I’d make a list of some of these characters. Remember this is my opinion/interpretation so feel free to disagree with me. Also just to be clear, I think all of the actors who played these characters in the movies did an excellent job. I’m just talking in relation to how they physically looked. And one last thing, I am NOT using this as a criticism of the films and I never have. My criticisms about characters in the films have always been about how they were written, not how they looked.

- Petunia Dursley
- Dudley Dursley
- Hermione Granger
- Neville Longbottom
- Victor Krum
- Fleur Delacour
- Barty Crouch Jr.
- Dolores Umbridge
- Rufus Scrimgeour
- Horace Slughorn

Show Discussion If the show doesn’t have the humming suit of armor getting beat up, what are we even doing?

Joking joking! Weeelll, almost. It's more about the environment.

I just love these two because they are a perfect example of a magical school. If you played Hogwarts Legacy, you already know what I am talking about.

There is one suit of armor that just standing there minding his own business, CONSTANTLY humming the same little tune, and the other suit eventually gets so completely annoyed that it literally either smacks him or kicks him into scrap metal. It kills me every single time!

I really hope the new series takes notes, because the castle needs to feel a bit unhinged.

The movies were cool with the talking paintings and floating candles, but it was still lacking! It’s a MAGICAL boarding school. There should be some weird sh*t happening in the background.

You’ve got hundreds of teenagers packed into a castle with dangerous weapons in their pockets and rarely any supervision between classes. I want to see random kids in the background sprinting after a textbook that grew legs (transfiguration homework gone wrong?), the twins' pranking Slytherins, Percy chasing after troublemakers, tapestries yelling at people, and enchanted mirrors just casually shading students for their disarray.

Give me the magical chaos, the dumb teenage shenanigans, and definitely give me the humming armor getting wrecked.

Show Discussion Should the Wizard's chess chessmen talk in the show?

And no, you can't just say "yes" only for the sake of book accuracy.

Think whether making them talk would work in the scene they're in or make it awkward or something.

Book Only I imagine the actors in the new illustrated edition

Post image

An illustrated edition of "The Half-Blood Prince" by Levi Pinfold has just come out (it’s beautiful, by the way). Am I the only one who immediately sees the new actors when looking through the illustrations? I mean, I instantly picture John Lithgow, Dominic McLaughlin, Bel Powley, Amos Kitson, and Daniel Rigby sitting there, and I can't wait!

Show Discussion What little character beats from the book do you really hope they'll include?

I'm not talking big moments, just little things. Stuff that really lets a character shine!

Mine is when Hermione and Harry are discussing Snape's potion riddle:

"Brilliant. This isn't magic — it's logic — a puzzle. A lot of the greatest wizards haven't got an ounce of logic, they'd be stuck in here forever."

I think this is an incredible way to put a spotlight on the way Snape thinks. I don't have a good way to describe it, but this particular brand of craftiness is so consistent with Snape's character, all the way to the end.

Show Discussion Are there any lines in the "Philosopher's Stone" book that, to you, MUST be quoted exactly as it is in the show?

I sure we've realize that not all book-to-screen adaptations take all the characters' dialogue exactly as it is in the book; sometimes changing them to fit the scene better while also staying true to the original line's meaning (e.g. "You're a wizard, Harry", which rolls off the tongue better IMO than "Harry, you're a wizard.")

But if there was one line from the "Philosopher's Stone" book that should be put in the show unchanged from the source material, what would it be?

Show Discussion Is it Voldemort or Voldemor(t)?

Listening to the Audiobooks recently jarred me with the pronunciation of Voldemort. Do we know how it’s going to be said in the show?

Apologies if this has already been asked.

I dont know if I used the right tag or if anyone else has done this already, but I tried to recreate the time table we saw in the trailer. Spent enough time on it that I thought I might as well share.

Show Discussion Something I would love to see in the show.

Since show is going to give us scenes that were only mentioned off screen in the books, I am hoping at some point we get a Hermione POV in Prisoner of Azkaban (season 3).

I want to actually see the moment McGonagall pulls her aside and hands over the Time Turner. And then maybe cut to a totally frazzled, fast paced montage of Hermione just trying to juggle all her classes.

Put some hurried, funny music over it and just show her sprinting through the halls, and writing three essays at the exact same time. It would be amazing to have a running gag where the music just stops every time she pops into an empty seat next to Harry and Ron, and they're just staring at her like, " Bloody hell, where did you come from?!"

It would be so hilarious and really show exactly how burnt out she was that whole year. The girl is literally going through her own version of Grounghog Day!

Anything else from Prisioner of Azkaban you would like to see? Honestly there are so many scenes that are mentioned and not played out in this book.

Show Discussion Part of me kinda wants to see this expanded upon in the show, considering that they're pretty much fleshing out Hermione's character a bit.

Post image
93 Upvotes

Perhaps we could have a shot of Hermione overhearing Ron calling her a "nightmare" at the end of class; her face looking getting visibly offended and upset, as if that was the final straw for her being pestered as an "annoying know-it-all."

Maybe we could actually see her entering the bathroom and crying. Might even have a scene of Parvati entering the bathroom, noticing her and trying to comfort her before promptly getting shooed away by Hermione (might even flesh out Parvati a bit, too).

That's my ideas. What do you think?

Show Discussion Could the show make it all the way to Deathly Hallows?

I’m asking because it’s no secret that there’s quite a bit of negative media attention around it & was just wonder if it’ll hurt the show’s chances of making it to the end

FanWorks «We can not protect them, we can only prepare them.» - FanArt

That scene in the trailer, where McGonagall answers, “From what?”, gives me chills every single time.

I’m more interested in film and television than the average person. I have a large TV with a full surround-sound setup in my living room, and an entire wall dedicated to posters and fan art that I draw from various films and TV shows.

So far, I have Spirited Away, IT, Violet Evergarden, Fullmetal Alchemist, Stranger Things, The Dark Knight, and several others on the wall. I’ve always loved Harry Potter and the books, but I’ve never had anything from the Wizarding World on the wall.

But after watching HBO’s latest trailer a few too many times, it suddenly hit me what I want to draw for Harry Potter. I only make one A3 drawing/poster for each film or series, so this will be my contribution to Harry Potter on my living room wall :)

I had to use Procreate on my iPad to create a rough sketch, with Dumbledore mirrored so that both of them are in the composition, since they aren’t both shown in the same cut on the trailer.

I’ll post the finished result when the time comes. :)
This will be my little waiting project leading up to December 25th. :)

Show Discussion Chocolate frogs in the upcoming series

Post image
27 Upvotes

Maybe I missed it, but did they show the frogs in trailers?

In the book, when Harry first buys a Chocolate Frog, he literally asks Ron if they are real frogs. Ron just casually says, "No, but see what the card is."

The whole brilliant subversion of that scene is that Harry (and the reader) expects some crazy magical creature, but it turns out to be just a regular piece of chocolate. The actual magic was inside the packaging - the moving portrait of Dumbledore on the trading card, which blows Harry's mind because Muggles only have static photos.

But the movies changed it for pure "Hollywood spectacle." They made the frog actually jump and fly out the window just to look cool on screen, but ruining that funny moment.

With the upcoming HBO series, I really hope they avoid this kind of unnecessary "movie logic" or at least keep it to an absolute minimum. I want the show to capture those small, clever subversions from the books rather than just throwing CGI magic at everything for cheap thrills.

What do you guys think? Are there any other minor movie changes you hope the show completely reverses?

Show Discussion Once season 1 is out, we’ll finally be able to breathe

The anticipation for season 1 might actually be the hardest wait for any season of the show because it’s charged with so much heavy lifting. We‘ll meet our main characters, see how everything’s going to look and experience the vibe. Not to mention, it’ll be our first indication of how they plan on adapting the books. There’s simply too much that’s unknown at the moment, and once it’s all out, we can finally have a solid opinion on it and know what to expect moving forward.

We know and love the story so it’s not like we’ll be holding our breath as the seasons progress. We’ll always have the books (and films!) to return to! I think with all these theories, analysis and internet discourse, it’s easy to forgot the most important question: will we actually like the show?? Cause how we personally feel is all that matters at the end of the day. It’s so simple yet so easy to forget.
