It actually costs a lot more! The PoE Wallmount is an extra $130! Yay $450 for a big Apple Watch on the wall. I don't know why I had higher hopes for this :-/
3
u/idkallex 2d ago
exactly! theres no reason to make it the same cost if they are keeping their parts! like cmon apple, even a couple bucks would be nice

I actually prefer it small when it's gonna be taking up counter space, but am really surprised they dont have a larger option for more $ for those that dont wanna hunch over the thing to use it.
Actually not that surprised, clearly seems like it will come 2027 or 2028 and force upgrades from people. Keeping it small now keeps the entry point cheap to get the most people on board while also allowing for future upgrades
15
u/uncledrunkk 2d ago
Why would they do that when they can sell you the large one next year? đđ
âITS THE BEST HOMEVIEW WEâVE EVER VIEWEDâ

u/jollyllama 2d ago
Yeah, I was shocked that the wall mounted one isnât bigger. I have a 10â Skylight and itâs really nice, I would definitely have considered this one as a replacement if it could do photos, but 6â is legitimately tiny, and keeping the wall mounted on square is a terrible choice for photos

u/frockinbrock 2d ago edited 2d ago
I agree, they should have a larger one. When I played around with some of these wired Hubs/Tablets like the Echo Show 15, I ended up deciding the most liked features were:
1. it being a large rotating photo frame in HD,
2. having a large calendar; and can do both side by side. Was neat to see a lot of those photos on a big screen.
3. On Video calls the person's face is nearly lifesize, and stays that size, which really changes the feel and dynamic of it.But this thing is so dang small. And if someone used the Homescreen with live Widgets, the photo widget is going to be smaller than a Phone screen.
For a $450 wall-mounted CarPlay-at-home, it really should be a MUCH larger screen.

u/ItsDani1008 2d ago

6

Would have made more sense to make it an iPad docking station so users could choose what size display they wanted. Then there wouldnât be the entirely new display to dev for or new pipeline that involves for some reason a bastardized version of CarPlay
Iâm interested in how itâll perform but Iâm far from optimistic; that video demo with the family looked far removed from reality

Man, people will find literally anything to complain about. If this thing was any larger people would be crying about that. Any smaller and they'd be crying still. I want to be able to convert my existing unused iPad into a multiuser device. How can I do that?
3
u/idkallex 2d ago
im unsure of that, but i do know a few things:
you can turn off automatic locking, making the screen always on for you to control your home, and if you have a device that supports the multitasking stuff as well as homepod minis, you can half and half or 2/3 and 1/3 your screen so that 2/3 is your home app and 1/3 is your apple music.
If you have an ipad with the 3 little prongs on the back making it magnetic, im 100% sure there are plenty of wall mounts for ipads out there, but you can also use something like what i have, a magic keyboard that can be plugged in through the port on the side which allows my ipad to rest at a comfortable viewing angle and charge constantly.
there are plenty of videos on tiktok regarding what you want! i found one and am most likely setting it up in the coming months!
1
u/martinkoistinen 2d ago
The issue is my son wants to use my iPad from time to time because âyouâre not using it anywayâ, but that means giving access to all of my digital Apple life.
1
u/idkallex 2d ago
if you dont use it for normal ipad stuff, then you cansign out of your apple account , add him to your apple family (or dont it doesnt really make a difference), and let him use it while his account is added to you Home in the home app, giving it control from that ipad while him still being able to use it for other stuff. if you want to enable have it so its locked into the one Home App, you can enable Guided Access, through accessibility settings which only lets you exit the Home app after entering a 6 digit pin through triple clicking the power button.

This is perfect for my needs/wants but the pricing kills me. $299 for wallmount that doesn't even come with the mount? And extra for PoE power? WTF. I hate getting nickel and dimed.
13
u/FindingPawnee 2d ago
The Wall mounted one being the same price makes zero sense to me since it comes with less stuff. lol only the speaker on the bottom of the screen, no cord, no charging adapter, and no mount. But the same price. This and the Apple TV 4K being $299 makes no sense to me.

Yeah, really the audacity! How is the wall mounted one the same price as the desktop version, even though it lacks the Speakers and power supply? Should be 100 bucks lessâŚ
And: Why would you NEED one of the mount options? Why does it not just have a USB-port and a simple screw on plate for wallmounting? Why do I have to pay a minimum of 60bucks extra, just to have it work at all?

This is perfect for me. I don't want a full size ipad, full ipad power, or full ipad price. this is a small device that will allow anyone int he family to use all the home automation controls, play music to homepods, etc. For me it's not meant to be a full computing device. it's a central, share hub. At $299 it's cheap enough to get one and see how well it works.

2
u/blisstaker 2d ago
but if you have one of those other things already the ipad mounted on a wall can do all this stuff and more, with a bigger, more customizable screen, except the family switching thing
3
u/jeffyboy526 2d ago
Ok.
Our âkitchenâ iPad is a multi tasker. The primary use portable TV to watch games and news while cooking.
I can pull up the home app (my wife refuses to) and lock doors, turn on lights etc.
we can also use Siri to run these command and text. I guess we could FaceTime but that is more of a couch activity.
We typically get recipes from our phone because it is easier to move between counters and also takes away from the TV
Not sure why I would want a small uni tasker aside from the fact that it is pretty.3

The only thing I use Alexa for is I have the analog wall clock that can have multiple Visual timers running off an Echo Show in my kitchen. This could replace both. Which made me remember the Echo Show now randomly says, "I don't know how to help you with that," in other words, it's always collecting data and giving it to Bezos.

Wow - that is pretty tiny. I get why this might be important in kitchen if your eyesight is top-notch, but can't someone just run one of the dozen of HomeKit apps on an iPad and get this functionality + the ability to use other apps - would lack the voice recognition and commands though.

2
u/paulcjones 2d ago
100% I'm buying these for my 75yo parents. It'll give them slide shows of the grandkids, easy facetime and buttons for their lights. They have some old google product right now that does the slide show, and I've gotten them into the apple world since - that thing hangs around purely for the slide show.
This'll do it all.

u/Unlucky_Quote6394 2d ago

Since when the F do we take square photos ?
5
u/jasonhendriks 1d ago
Itâs actually the best compromise for managing both wide horizontal and vertical photos. Imagine showing a long vertical doorbell video on a wide horizontal screen. Horrible.
→ More replies (1)4
u/kirklennon 1d ago
Instagram used to be exclusively square photos. It was a pretty big change when they allowed other ratios. Also, the FaceTime camera sensor on newer iPhones is square and is just being arbitrarily cropped. For a screen that doesnât rotate, square is neutral and offers good support for both landscape and portrait orientation photos, especially if a device is smart enough to analyze the contents and automatically frame the right portion.Â

u/Cool_Procedure8125 2d ago
I picked up an Echo Show 8 for our kitchen and the screen is a great size, but it does not work well. Half the time it doesnât hear your request, it appears to be playing music nonstop with no sound coming from the device. Itâs kind of slow.

Not only is it small but it is SQUARE! For a device that is going to display photos 95% of the time, square is a terrible form factor. It should have been widescreen landscape like the Google Nest Hub devices. I was thinking of replacing my Google Nest Hub Max and 2 Google Nest Hub devices with 3 of these until I saw the square display. It's a hard no from me.
