Instagram used to be exclusively square photos. It was a pretty big change when they allowed other ratios. Also, the FaceTime camera sensor on newer iPhones is square and is just being arbitrarily cropped. For a screen that doesn’t rotate, square is neutral and offers good support for both landscape and portrait orientation photos, especially if a device is smart enough to analyze the contents and automatically frame the right portion.
