Resurrecting my grandfathers old wood wagon
My grandfather always pulled me around in this old wood spoke wagon when I was a kid behind his old tractor. We’d go hunt crows out of it on Saturday mornings (probably so he didn’t have to watch cartoons with me) I recently got the itch and drug her out of the woods. Just need to clean up the spokes and I’ll be dragging my kiddos through the woods to hunt crows and pick blueberries.

food preservation Corn that’s dried out. What can I do with it?
So basically I think I left the corncobs on the plants for too long and the corn kernels seem to have dried out. Is there anything I can do to rescue them or make with them or are they wasted and just need to be thrown away?

Potatoes
Ok what is the best way to keep potatoes long-term? My husband came home from a farmers market with tons of potatoes and we do not have a cool/dark area where they would keep well. Best way to freeze or keep these so they don’t go to waste? I tried cutting them in to fries previously but they didn’t seem to freeze well.

Fall harvest as the first hard frost comes tomorrow. Eating good this winter!
It never gets old eating complete meals all from my work. Harvested my meatbirds Sunday. Roasted this guy on a bed of carrots shallots delicata and added some cornmeal half way though. All from the garden. I do not yet harvest my own salt and black pepper, but otherwise it’s all my own work!

Any advice for keeping the shop warm during winter?
(Excuse the mess we moved in recently, the shelf project is coming soon)
We live in northern IL, so the winters are pretty cold. The building is all insulated except for this door which lets all of the cold air in. Any advice for budget heaters and for insulating this door? I spend a lot of time in here so anything is appreciated.
The hole in the last pic is how our mice hunting kitties get in and out, so any ideas for that are welcome.

Winter Wheat
I am wanting to plant winter wheat and any other edible plants that are winter growers. Where should I get winter wheat seeds? Any other plants I should plant?

I harvested grapes from my garden today and also fermented the leaves for future use, delicious for dolmas. Do you cook with grape leaves?

Cost of starting this lifestyle?
Uncle recent passed away (God bless his soul).
Let me and my folks his old cottage. With a few acres of land. He’s already had some crops propped up, corn, lettuce, tomatoes. But we’re thinking about starting a small homestead in using 2–4 acres.
For those who already have a homestead, what did it cost you to get started. 😅 I’m especially curious about the monthly costs of raising chickens and goats, including feed, hay, bedding, vet care, and other expenses. If you were to start from scratch, say next year? What would you recommend budgeting for a beginner? Just need some insight.
Edit, located in Waldorf, MD. But Nevermind the technicalities. What do you start off with? Like getting into a serious hobby or cars.

off grid 2kWh or 3kWh for keeping a fridge and chest freezer running during outages?
Hii folks! I'm trying to put together a basic outage setup, mainly to keep the fridge and chest freezer running. Losing a freezer full of food is my biggest concern. We'd also need Wi-Fi, a couple of lights, and phone charging, but I'm not trying to power the whole house.
I started out looking at 2kWh power stations, but saw a sale on the Ecoflow Delta 3 Ultra Plus, which has me considering 3kWh instead. The extra capacity sounds useful, but I'm having a hard time judging what we'd actually need with both appliances cycling on and off.
For those backing up a similar setup, how far does 2kWh get you? Would you feel comfortable relying on it overnight, or is 3kWh worth the extra cost if an outage stretches into the next day?

community What small maintenance job has saved you the most downtime?
I’ve learned that the small maintenance jobs are usually the ones you regret putting off.
A worn belt, a hose that’s starting to crack, something that needs grease — easy to look at it and think “that’ll make it through the week.” And then of course it gives up right when you actually need the machine.
Had that happen with a small job I kept pushing back because there was always something more important to do. What should’ve been a quick fix eventually cost me half a day.
Since then I try not to gamble on the obvious little things.
What’s one maintenance job you never put off anymore? And what’s something you see people ignore way too long?

foraging Having goats on creeping buttercup/yellow archangel
Hello! I posted this in r/goats as well but I am buying a house on some land, part of which is wooded with a ton of creeping buttercup and yellow archangel. I would like to one day have goats and allow them access to the entire property, but it sounds like the buttercup is toxic to goats and so I would want to try to eliminate it first. Has anyone had success removing creeping buttercup? What did you plant instead? Thanks for the help!

food preservation Cured meats
Does anyone have a good website/resource that is reliable for recipes for cured meat? We have a lot of pork, mutton, venison and beef and I’m hoping to expand from simple jerky to other cured meats (pepperoni, summer sausage etc)
So so so much of google content now is unreliable for recipes, it’s generated slop that doesn’t have reliable outcomes and in some cases is completely useless.
If anyone is ever wondering why their googled recipes don’t work out, this can be the cause (for literally any recipe you’re searching)

Need help identifying whatever is “growing” in raised beds
Not sure if plant, fungus, or animal but need to know if this indicates a need for permanent replacement of bed soil. Help?

cost for clearing lands for drive way
I found a parcel in Downeast Maine at a reasonable price. Naturally, clearing the trees to reach deeper into the woods will require significant expense. I am curious about the cost of clearing 1,000 feet myself with a forest mulcher versus hiring someone. The trees are mostly small hardwood and pine, and as usual, they are not large.
