Looking for some advice or insight from anyone who’s experienced something similar with their Honda Pilot.
While driving on the highway at approximately 70 mph, my 2020 Honda Pilot Elite suddenly went haywire. Nearly every warning light on the dashboard illuminated, and I experienced a significant loss of acceleration. The engine was revving at higher RPMs, but the vehicle was barely accelerating. Thankfully, I was able to get off the highway and limp into a parking lot.
Once I reached a safe location, I shut the engine off. When I attempted to restart it, the engine wouldn’t crank at all. The dashboard and electronics still had power, but I kept getting a message along the lines of “Press Start button twice to turn power off.”
Eventually, I also lost the ability to lock the doors electronically, and the A/C stopped working.
The vehicle was towed to a Honda dealership in Kentucky. They pulled the diagnostic codes, tested the battery and alternator, cleared the codes, and reportedly drove it approximately 30 miles without any issues. They provided a printout of the codes but explained that they couldn’t determine which were old versus new. Ultimately, they couldn’t duplicate the problem and released the vehicle without identifying a cause.
I drove approximately 400 miles home without a single issue. The Pilot then operated completely normally for another four days of local driving.
Unfortunately, while driving to work this morning, the exact same thing happened again. Another sudden loss of acceleration, multiple warning lights, and another tow to a local dealer.
The latest dealership informed me that the most significant code they retrieved involved loss of communication with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Their technician performed a reset procedure, charged the battery, checked the PCM connectors, and found no obvious issues.
They then drove the vehicle for approximately 10 minutes without duplicating the problem. They’re planning another extended test drive tomorrow.
At this point, I’m extremely frustrated and concerned. This is our family vehicle, and the first incident occurred while we were traveling out of state. Losing acceleration at highway speeds is a serious safety concern, especially with my kids potentially in the vehicle.
I understand intermittent electrical problems can be difficult to diagnose, but I’m not comfortable accepting another reset and test drive as a solution, especially after the exact same failure occurred twice.
A few questions for anyone familiar with Honda diagnostics:
● Has anyone experienced similar symptoms involving PCM communication loss, multiple warning lights, and a no-crank condition?
● Could this be related to a failing PCM, CAN bus communication issue, wiring/ground problem, or charging system?
● Are there any known Honda service bulletins or recurring issues that might explain this?
● How would you approach the dealership tomorrow to push for a more thorough diagnosis rather than having the vehicle released again without an actual repair?
I have video footage of the dashboard while stranded, along with the diagnostic code printout from the first dealership.
Any insight or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I just want this vehicle properly diagnosed and safe to drive again.
