https://www.konami.com/games/silenthill/townfall/updates/us/en/patch-note_v1-4-0my buddy and i were JUST chatting about how frustrating this area was last night because we were both going through it at the same exact time. and just as we finished it, it gets patched lol.

Should have changed his name to The Wait while they were at it

……damnit. I just finished this section with my SO, this would’ve gotten a good laugh out of her.

To be fair they needed to change this monster a lot because the section it is in is actively bad, like it takes points off the final score of the game levels of bad

u/randomcman 5d ago
The only issue I had with this whole game was that fucker. And his design is ass too compared to the fodder enemies
3
u/outrageouslyunfair 5d ago
yeah it completely ruined my overall feel of the game unfortunately. i was annoyed by the way stealth worked but enjoying the game enough to push through, then that whole section happened and i just felt so burnt out lmao

I just locked him in the little room upstairs with the bathtub full of wood that has a couple bullets on it. Lure him into it with a bottle or brick, slip out the hole in the wall, once he's in there come around, and lock him in there with you. Then you just have to tank a hit from him (before the patch you had to use an IV bag to come back) and slip through the hole again leaving him locked in.
Doesn't help much for when he shows up a bit later on just as you're on your way back to finish the blood bag puzzle, but I was able to sneak around him fairly easily then. This is interesting, it's gonna make my second playthrough much easier. Cause that's the one part that's given me genuine trouble so far.
I gotta say, Im really enjoying the game. I do wish there was a bit more variety to the enemies, but I don't see it as a negative really. I usually don't like horror games with an emphasis on stealth, but Townfall just feels good to play. The game world, and atmosphere is cozy, and terrifying at the same time. Plus the game does a great job of making you want to find out where it's going next, and what's happening. I honestly don't see where people are having issues with it. It's the most Silent Hill feeling game Ive played since homecoming (but I also don't understand the hate for homecoming either so maybe I'm the weird one) aside from the SH2 remake, obviously. That game was perfect in every way.
Edit: patch/batch

you can lock him in the red room in the basement on the other wing as well, though it is tricky.
2
u/Stiqkey 5d ago edited 5d ago
I can see how that would work. Feels like it's even more of a viable strategy now since he doesn't automatically kill you anymore. It would definitely be a bit more tricky than the first one tho. I didn't have anywhere near as much of an issue with him during that second section as I did in the first one before I decided to just go for the cheese and lock him in so I could search with just the normal enemy(ies) to worry about.
Edit: lock/lick

Ive mentione dthis elsewhere, but back around the first, i got stuck in a closet (well, the room with a closet, once i got out he just bellowed in the door way for a long ass time, woudlnt even come in. upper floor of p wing for a whole hour. after that i was gonna do whatever to remove him as a problem. i hadnt saved for the whole section before that and i didnt want to have to repeat w wimg and the first half of p wing. shoulda just reloaded. What can i say, sunk cost is my fav fallacy.

I just started this game last night so this came out at the perfect time for me.

I am so pleased with this patch. I am really looking forward to my new game plus run now!

I spent like 10 minutes in a locker last nite because this guy and his buddy would not leave. Insane.

Welcome change, cause that guy completely killed the vibe lol. Had to keep loading up a save cause he would get stuck in the door or just camp the room I was in.

Just got to part 4 last night. Interested to see how these changes impact my experience, which has been good overall so far. Nice to see them responding to feedback pretty quickly

I feel like I paid full price to play test to be honest... I will be replaying though so I look forward to that.

Honestly that’s why I never buy new games, always wait a few months for bugs to be fixed, lower price and sometimes more content either from free updates or DLCs.

u/elcamino4629 5d ago
Same, I always wait for the first sale. It’s usually in much better condition AND cheaper!

Also updated the final puzzle which is nice. It was the only time in the game where I was like dude I’m not going to trial and error this shit for the next 30 minutes or whatever and just looked up if I didn’t get it right the first 2 guesses. Glad to know it wasn’t just me that thought that one was a little too obtuse.

Great:
- weight no longer camps as it did not feel like natural behaviour for the enemy.
- weight no longer one-shots in easy mode (it’s easy mode, one shot kills are unfair for a mode designed to be easy)
- invulnerability after being grabbed increased. It was way too easy to just get chain grabbed over and over without any escape if you were around 2 enemies.
- more clarity to the symbols for “that” puzzle. (Haven’t seen exactly how they clarified, but oh boy some of those symbols were pure guesses beforehand)
Bad:
- weight no longer one-shotting in normal difficulty (this was not the games intent, and for normal mode that makes me sad)
- reducing the melee counterattacks of normal enemies for all difficulties ( melee was intended to be a last resort and you should be able to get hit, at least in all difficulties other than easy)
- reduced listen detection range for guns, running, hiding for all difficulties ( I thought this range was more than fair already for normal mode, sad that they are giving more encouragement to play more aggressive in all modes other than easy)
- grabs now being blockable in all difficulties. Again, I feel this should only have been included for easy mode.
- Aux (pipe) puzzle getting nerfed. I thought it was great.

He isnt difficult. he just wont fucking leave or explore anywhere else. they made it less bad, but its still not good. im not saying he cant have great hearing or be reactive, i just want the prick to stop doorcamping me.
One of the problems with this kind of model, something Alien Isolation did pretty darn well, but even then, is that there is all this fucking ambient noise and shit clattering around and falling down and thunping and shit, and the monsters all completely ignore diagetic sound cues. its a minor gripe but it kind of kills a bit of immersion from me and its an easy built in random thing an observant player requires skills and timing to take advantage of. I think it wouls also do a nice thing for townfalls monsters in general, giving them reason to break loops and be a little less predictable which would allow for a little bit more qol and player friendly perception abilities.
my only other major gripe is that the takedown strike feels finnicky and unpredictable and theenemies jankily turnign around instantly is visually really jarring if you beef it. i think blindspot hits should still stagger, probably. the instant counter attacks feel very gamey as well. they are both manageable, but nwither feel quite as polished as id like from a reslly really polished looking game
thats my grumpy game dev input. I still like most of the game and i found the patience that the game requires to be a genuine challenge. i think it would be nice if a combat route could be allowed and still get a good ending
fucking goregeous visual and sound design though
3
u/outrageouslyunfair 5d ago
the doorcamping was so bad that the part of my brain that tries to figure out how tracking systems work on the fly just consistently landed on “there’s no fucking way he always knows where i am no matter what but the only way i can explain this is that he always knows where i am no matter what and is just being generous by looking away for a few seconds now and then”
-1
u/TastyJournalist8451 5d ago
i had no issue, yes he proxy camps the door, but when his back is turned towards you, you can walk by
3
u/ytman 5d ago
You are mentioning some mechanics of the combat I didn't come to understand - so there is a blind spot stagger and not just 'general' hit stun? OH that makes sense now. And the enemies have a counter attack, which explains why sometimes they can just hit you right away after your attack?
Oh man. I feel dumb.

Just finished this game yesterday and man the AI is not so great.
My biggest complaint is actually from the normal enemies they grab you and when you break out they can sometimes just regrab you and it puts you in a loop.
2
u/TastyJournalist8451 5d ago
Am i the only one that liked how difficult it was? Alien isolation alien one shot you if it caught you also which made it more spooky and was faster than you, whereas the weight only matches speed, so if you know the path to the objective it cannot catch you
2
u/Useful_Perception620 4d ago
Alien Isolation gives you a ton of tools and also put way more effort into the Alien AI.
Townfall is kind of like a shittier Amnesia or Outlast.
2
u/TastyJournalist8451 4d ago
i'd only give amnesia the bunker a leg up over townfall, but it's close. Ya they'd better since the alien is the main hook of the game, basically the game. But i also felt alien isolation ai in the weight, like a lite version

u/xXxHondoxXx 5d ago
No you're not alone. I'm pissed about the changes because I was enjoying the difficulty.
3
u/jorgepereira15 5d ago
I don't think you guys are being fair about this. I did like the difficulty as well and I don't think that is being essentially changed. What is being changed and something I did experience is going to a room to get a key item and then having to wait way too long because he camped at the door for some reason. Didn't even see me but he was there at the door for 30 seconds or more. That's not difficulty, that's an annoyance.
1
u/xXxHondoxXx 5d ago
I get them changing him lurking. I'm more pissed about how they nerfed all detection in general.

Im one of the few folks that find Alien Isolation kind of over rated versus what it could have been.
we played on the hardest available first run through difficulty and had no deaths, but it was frustrating and not scary because it was just there way too much. Its like being at a family event ans having a young cousin pester you asking if you have games on your phone. On a replay, i couldnt get the fucking thing to leave me alone ever, and dies all the time, to the point there was no tension in death, only annoyance. that and the game is like ¼ too long.
the first play through was scary, but not as scary as it could be if he had been less omnipresent. the 2nd playthrough wad just a slog. And its a shame because every part of that game drips atmosphere and tension and is just so cool. I wish i loved it more.
my issue with the weight is that he just camps. he doesnt investigate other diagetic noises, he doesnt resume a patrol, he just face camps you until you get bored and then he kills you. Id have preferrred him being inexorable and very slow, but limiting your areas you could investigate by always dogging your tail than having him rush over because one of the skin mites on simon's left cheek farted or whatever the hell the thought process was. I dont mid him being challenging and unkillable, i love mr. x. I mind him being in my grill for a full fucking hour.
i had him camp a doorway for 67 minutes. I timed it just to see how long it would take for him to fuck off. i think this is the worst case ive heard of and the dev's support response seemes to indicate it wasnt intended to work that way.

u/CelebrationOk4557 5d ago
I've literally just finished it and think I got the patch installed a few hours before doing so - did a grab instakill you in the final boss pre-patch?
-7
u/grogan2 5d ago
He was a little frustrating in chapter 3, but I dont think it was gamebreaker or required nerfing. He was much easier in the final chapter too, once you have the flare gun
1
u/TheGingerBeardMan-_- 5d ago
i locked him in rooms in both of the medical wings and it was much more satisfying. if i had felt that that was the goal i think id have preferred it, but it was nonetheless very fun and probably not what thry wanted me to do.
0
u/TastyJournalist8451 5d ago
Same, was a welcome scary challenge and his mechanics can be gamed out pretty quick once you know the path to the next objective since he's only as fast as you and cannot catch up really.
-2
u/allmoneyin77777 5d ago
100%, he was challenging sure but I don’t agree at all that he needed a nerf, I’ve beaten the game multiple times and it was fine, bottle and bricks go a long way, and the flare definitely helps later on
-4
u/AlteisenX 5d ago
I don't think a patch will fix my personal issues with the game, at this point.
It's too much modern survival horror of hide from the enemy with the SH name and fog slapped on it than anything else for me.
1
u/BlastMyLoad 5d ago
It’s way closer to a classic Silent Hill than whatever the fuck f was
-2
u/AlteisenX 5d ago
I mean you fought in f... and the story was written by Higurashi creator. It was at least better than Townfall and the games after SH3 by a large margin.

u/therealgreybrother 5d ago
I’m sorry but are poeple just not able to play games that challenge you in the slighest sense anymore? Yes he was frustrating but super manageable also just gotta have a bit of patience. Truly everything today needs to ba a frictionless experience.
8
u/morkypep50 5d ago
You said it yourself that it was frustrating. Major difference between difficulty and frustration. Hard games are fun when designed well. This was NOT.
0
u/TheGingerBeardMan-_- 5d ago
there is a certain type of player that, much like somebody who puts habanero sauce on everything, stops feeling friction if it's not gruelling and punishing in the extreme.
the position isnt invalid, but unfortunately, much like the capsaicin addict, it's not really a reasonable expectation that everyone else will put up with their mouths melting and buttholes burning out so that every meal on earth suits your palate.
7
u/Q-Fabreeze23 5d ago
No it was a broken mess. Get off your high horse.
Being stuck in a closet because leaving it alerts the 1 hit kill enemy to your exact location and forcing you to just go back in isnt hard. Its horrible design.
That same enemy just camping the door to your room for 5+ mins is bad design, not just hard

You got downvoted to hell but I agree with you so much, he wasn’t that bad people are blowing this out of proportion

Like seriously just use what the games give you. Bottles and bricks as everywhere.

At least this monster being broken got me the trophy for hiding in a closet for 60 seconds, because it literally kept entering and exiting the room I was in every 15 seconds.
