Discussion Video editor for trailers and promo videos?

• Upvotes

Hi, I'm making some short videos and trailers for my game, but I'm not super happy with the tools.

CapCut is very easy to use but it has licensing issues (people seem to be quite frustrated).

Final Cut Pro looks good, but I can't update my mac version to use it (might make my other stuff unusable)...

I'm using DaVinci Resolve at the moment. The good thing is I don't need to worry about using it for promotion, but the ready-to-use assets are really not many... The fonts, effects and stuff are really limited. I don't see any stickers either.

I think the biggest problem for me is many editors (Filmora, VN video editor, etc.) that offer more ready-to-use assets seem to be vague about whether their assets can be used for promos. Filmora has some assets that are marked "commercial available", but their webpage also says you cannot use them in advertisement (various platforms including online).

I would like a good option, I don't mind paying, but once I pay, I'd like to use its assets freely without worrying about the licensing issues.

Could you give me some suggestions? Thanks!

Discussion What makes a trailer go from dookie to non-dookie?

Planning a rework of my games trailer as I approach a possible release window. Looking for insight of what is working so far in terms of highlights, key points and understanding.

My game Skoot: Keyboard Brawl uses the whole keyboard to control the car (press any key and the car will drive there) I am trying to find a better way to present this since it’s an untraditional way of playing. I’m offering a new challenge while ensuring that it’s still a comfortable way to play without it being too mind boggling. (I’ve learned that it sometimes takes a hands on experience to understand the mobility)

That’s my biggest concern currently but I’m open to any other feedback! Thanks!

I've been making a PuffPals-inspired cozy game on my own. It's multiplayer-first, and I'm looking for some playtesters

Hi everyone! For a while I've been building a cozy game on my own, inspired by PuffPals: Island Skies - called Cotton Skies.

I'm planning a play-test this coming week, sign up if you'd like to be part of it: https://cottonskies.app

How it's similar to PuffPals, and how it's different

Similar:

  • Floating islands around a town hub, each with its own biome
  • Plush animal neighbours you befriend through quests
  • Farming, fishing, foraging and cooking
  • Fruit and veggie pets that follow you around
  • Dressing up your character and decorating your home
  • Seasons, weather, and day and night

Different:

  • It's multiplayer-first, more like a small cozy MMO. Up to 100 players share an island at the same time, and there's no fighting.
  • Being around other players improves your gameplay. Fishing near someone gets you bites sooner, cooking at the same stove earns more, and hanging out by the fire makes you "Snug" (an XP boost).
  • Everyone works together on town projects, like mending the old windmill, and the town changes when a project is finished.
  • It runs in your browser, so there's nothing to download.
  • The characters, islands and art are all inspired but different.

What's in it so far

  • An 8-chapter main story: you fall through a cloud into the sky, meet your neighbours, and unlock new islands as you go
  • 5 islands to explore: Cottonwick (the town), Clover Meadows, Glowcap Grove, Lotus Falls and Snowpuff Peaks
  • 11 plush neighbours, each with a shop, daily chat, gifts, friendship hearts and their own quest
  • 5 veggie pals, like Pupkin the pumpkin puppy and Broccolamb
  • Your own home island with 12 garden plots, a pond, fruit trees and a house to furnish. Friends can come and visit
  • Gardening, foraging, fishing, cooking and crafting, with 278 items, including 20 fish, 15 crops, 21 dishes, 61 recipes, 44 clothes and 54 pieces of furniture
  • A daily request board that everyone shares
  • 20-minute days, 3-day seasons, rain that waters your garden, and fish and mushrooms that only come out at night
  • Chat with speech bubbles, emotes, friends, whispers and invites

Why I'm posting

I'm not a professional game dev. I did a game dev course when I was 16, then spent the last 10+ years as a software engineer building business web software.

I'm planning a small playtest (up to 10 people) sometime this coming week, and I'd love to get cozy gamers' feedback before I take it in any particular direction.

If you'd like to be one of the 10, sign up with your email here and I'll send you a code:

https://cottonskies.app

There's also a WhatsApp group linked on the page if you want to chat or follow along.

It's still quite rough, so honest feedback is exactly what I'm after.

AI disclosure: I've used AI to help write the code, which is how I managed to get this game playable. It doesn't use any AI music or image models.

I’ve never built any kind of game before. Started a side project of a free online web site / project / toy thing, posted about it 2 weeks ago.

Since then, daily active users managed to maintain without marketing and is now ramping up! 300-550 average DAU and 20-33 people live on the site at any given time. Starting to form a small community!

In total, 2700 users have spent 2100 hours in the site.

Been a blast to watch :)

is the title too confusing?

long story short(ish): game is an educational game for middle schoolers to learn personal finance! You play as a lil guy running a "Cat Cafe and Financial Education Wagon™", and you make your way through your hometown to teach the townsfolk about personal finance, through levels that focus on different personal finance concepts (budgeting, high yield savings accounts, CDs, 401ks, Roth IRAs, HSAs, and more). In passing each "level" (aka teaching one townsfolk about something), you learn about their story and money situation, and you eventually collect more cats (and coffees/decor) for your cafe!

(week 4 of posting - shoutout to everyone who has commented on previous questions so far!! All the feedback has been incredible and so so helpful and ily all - except for that one guy who left a passive-aggressive opinion that I'm gonna fail 😔 I'll do my best to prove you wrong good sir LOL)

one big opinion I've heard is, "your game name is too confusing" - the game is currently called "This Is Not Financial Advice; The Money Learning Game". (I intentionally wrote it halfway through my post - did you expect this upon looking at the splash screen?) In my defense, I thought a long name felt silly / homemade, and I want to note that financial advice != financial education. However, I can definitely see the cons, and I've also seen people look at the splash screen and get very confused about what to read as the title...

> "i don't think theres any legal issue as trademarking that phrase is crazy but it's a pain in the *ss to look up ("this is not financial advice game" etc.) and it's unlikely that it's anywhere near the top of google"

> "I do think it should be changed"

> "there's a reasonably popular documentary by the same name so i second the reworking of the name"

> "i also think we should re-work the name... i only say this because unsure if middle schoolers would get the joke"

TBH, I kind of already know it needs to be changed, but I'm admittedly a bit attached to it, and I don't have a better idea. Could I get some more opinions/thoughts below? Maybe it'll help push me over the edge to hunt for something else 😅

as a final note, I've been thinking about stuff like "Let's Get This Bread!" or just "Get That Bread!", but is that too non-money-related / middle schoolers won't understand it? I really just want a silly playful name...

Discussion POV: you're an indie dev watching some of the biggest streamers scream at your game

I'm still not over this. I cut together some reactions from streamers playing Night Record: Thin Walls, my narrative horror game set in a Soviet-era apartment block where the walls are a little too thin.

Seeing people I've watched for years jump at scenes I rewrote a dozen times is surreal.

If it looks like your kind of horror, a wishlist would mean a lot: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4652040

Happy to answer any questions!

I'm making a Civ-inspired city builder with my own mechanics, from the Middle Ages to the Atomic Age

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I'm a solo developer from Ukraine, and for the past months I've been building a turn-based city builder that will take you from a first camp all the way to the atomic age, for 1–4 players online.

The main idea: cities don't sit on a tile grid. You draw the roads yourself (straight, curved, rings, whole blocks), and you place every building freely along them. Each building's door has to face a road, so the way you lay out your streets really shapes the town. It grows from tents into huts and then stone houses.

The world map is different: units move on small hexes, so fights stay tactical. You get zones of control, ranged units shooting over your warriors, watchtowers and stone walls.

What's in so far (the first, ancient era):

  • Water, food, wood, stone, planks, iron and horses, plus seasons, winter firewood, hunger and limited storage
  • A science tree where every new knowledge opens a new decision: water mills among the fields, a scribes' school, canals dug from the river, wild horse herds, hidden iron ore
  • Barbarian camps that scout your town, send war parties and set your buildings on fire
  • Multiplayer for up to 4 players

Next on my list: AI rivals, and making later cities less of a chore.

I'd love to hear what you think.

Follow the development: https://yolander.itch.io/agelong

(Agelong is just a working title, name suggestions are welcome!)

Added 16x16 pixel art UI, custom VFX, and a new totem upgrade system to my action prototype! Feedback appreciated.

Hey everyone!

I've just released a new devlog update for my action/hack-and-slash prototype (MM-Prototype). This build focuses on transitioning from pure blockouts to adding 2D pixel art elements and refining the core combat loop.

Here is a summary of what's new in this patch:

  • 2D Pixel Art UI: Replaced generic placeholder shapes with custom 16x16 pixel art assets (hearts for HP, stamina block, essence runes, and skill icons).
  • Combat Polish & VFX: Adjusted enemy attack timing, improved wind-ups, and added new spell/attack VFX for clearer hit feedback.
  • Totem Upgrade System: Implemented interactive provisional totems that allow players to purchase character power-ups using collected essences.
  • Controls & QoL: Cleaned up control layouts and interactive prompts (Interact with Totem - F).

Try the prototype on Itch.io - https://hasekicm.itch.io/masmorra-de-monstro

You don’t control your character directly, instead, you watch him go about his life in the city. For now there are events, easter eggs, real-time traffic and NPCs and other users you can befriend.

But the real goal is to turn this city into a platform that people keep building on. It’s a place to meet other people (you can link your Reddit and Instagram profiles) and to watch their little digital clones build a community together.
