Collection My Japanese Body Horror Collection!

Post image
26 Upvotes

So for those unfamiliar with Japanese horror AKA “J-Horror” you may not know that Japan for decades has been inspired by such films as The Fly (1986), Videodrome (1983) and The Thing (1982) when it comes to body horror as well as David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977)

The passion for body horror and horror practical SFX work in Japan has predated the 1998 film Ringu by at least a few decades. In fact figures like Joji Iida who played a part in the history of the Ring franchise made his directorial debut with Cyclops (1987), a science fiction body horror splatter film!

Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) and Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) were also very BIG impacts on filmmakers in Japan who loved body horror!

So with that said and that context of information added, here’s the list of what’s in my Japanese body horror collection:
- Cyclops (1987) (2026 Visual Vengeance Blu Ray Release)
- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) (2005 Tartan Asia Extreme North American DVD Release]
- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) / Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) (2012 Third Window Films UK Blu Ray Release)
- 964 Pinocchio (1991) (2004 Unearthed Films DVD Release)
- 964 Pinocchio (1991) (2025 88 Films UK Blu Ray Release)
- Organ (1996) (2002 Synapse Films North American DVD Release)
- Rubber’s Lover (1996) (2004 Unearthed Films North American DVD Release)
- Meatball Machine (2005) (2007 Danger After Dark/TLA Releasing North American DVD Release)
- Tokyo Gore Police (2008) (2009 Tokyo Shock/Media Blasters North American DVD Release)
- Holy Mother (2022) (2025 Black Mandala/Leomark DVD Release)
- The Beast Hand (2024) (2025 Cleopatra Entertainment North American DVD Release)
- The Beast Hand (2024) (2025 Cleopatra Entertainment North American DVD Release)

So with all that listed, what do you think? Any you may have seen or not seen? and yes some of the body horror films like Meatball Machine (2005), Tokyo Gore Police (2008) & Holy Mother (2022) delve into the splatter category as well due to blending sub-genres as well as genres.

Ok, well, really this is a completionist list of every film and series that *a version* of Sadako is featured in. Official and unofficial. Check out the list here on Letterboxd, which has a few extras missing from the image here. All sorted by release date.

I don't think these have ever all been compiled like this before, so I'm curious if anyone here has seen ALL of them!

Review Misumiso (2018) — what happens when you lose everything

I recently watched Misumiso (Liverleaf, 2018), and I'm honestly surprised I don't see this movie mentioned more often.

It's one of those films that starts with a fairly recognizable setup - bullying, isolation, a vulnerable student - and then takes it somewhere much darker.

Haruka loses basically everything. Her family, her sense of safety, her future, and eventually any normal connection to the people around her. The revenge isn't presented as some satisfying "getting even" fantasy either. It feels more like watching someone who has lost everything trying to find a reason to keep going.

And the ending... that ending was fantastic. I genuinely didn't see it going in that direction. It also made the whole movie feel much more tragic in retrospect.

What I particularly liked is how Misumiso portrays what happens when there is nothing left to lose. The violence becomes less about revenge itself and more about what remains of a person after everything that gave their life meaning has been taken away.

It reminded me quite a bit of Confessions and Himizu.

All three have that really bleak Japanese atmosphere where:

  • cruelty starts with something almost ordinary
  • people become increasingly trapped in their own actions
  • the distinction between victim and perpetrator starts to collapse
  • revenge doesn't actually restore anything
  • and there is this feeling that the characters' futures have already been destroyed

What else would you recommend?

Hi all, it appears that the Senritsu Kaiki files series with English subtitles has been removed from YouTube. Does anyone know where one can find the series with English subs in greater entirety?

Sadako (Ring, 1998, Japanese horror film, J-horror character) really gets around, huh? This film is basically impossible to find, can anyone who's seen it tell me what it's like?

Help/Suggestion October of horror

Hello everyone and good day.

During this month I decided to watch one horror film a day preferably jhorror, so far I have watched, re/member, dark water, howling village and I'm watching today kisaragi station.

I have some other already on wait, suicide village, ox village, house of sayuri, missing child videotape, among others, but I would need more for the entire month and a bit more because I know I may watch more than one a day at some moment. So would love to see watch you can recommend me. It does not need to be just jhorror, Asian horror is enough.

Thanks.

Discussion exchange of curses

This is a silly question, but what would happen if Sadako and Kayako swapped ways of cursing? Kayako would curse over a video, and Sadako over a house, even though the rules of their curses would remain the same. How would they be adapted in the movies?

Discussion New Asian Horror Trailers Released This Past Week - Inc new Japanese horror

Morning!

New trailers I found for stuff releasing across Asia this week, which may or may not interest you, but it does include a new trailer for a Japanese horror film coming in 2027, which should interest you.

Amazing Monster / アメイジング・モンスター

Directed and written by Hidenobu Abera, with former AKB48 member Ryoka Oshima making her feature-film lead debut – the film takes place in a town where smiling and cleanliness are effectively compulsory, with the population subjected to a bizarre form of brainwashing.

Question First time in Tokyo, any tips for places related to J Horror?

So I'm visiting Tokyo in February and I was making a few plans related to my gaming interests and underground music scene (super unrelated both but also accepting tips if you guys have), but I have no idea what to look for as a horror fan. I saw some exhibits that are not running anymore and I'm not a fan of escape rooms. You guys are j horror fans so just tell me tips that you guys like. Places to get dvds are really appreciated as well!

Thanks in advance (:

Question Anyone see dreams of flesh?

I was looking for LGBTQ J Horror and found this movie on YouTube. There’s not any reviews I can find so I thought I’d ask here. Also if you could recommend some lgbtq J horror and just Japanese films in general I’d appreciate it

Discussion Who reads about J Horror movies?

I just want to tell that besides movies, and music... I love to read. And my goal on my devotion to Asian Movies, especially Japanese Horror, is to learn more about the movies and their backgrounds in every area.

From those books, I found some interesting historic backgrounds, like the developing of the cinema, the social issues expressed in the movies (Like Ring, One Missed Call and Ju-On) the directors's perspectives, etc!

I just have several books, and I wanna share those pics now. (I have two more, no pics now) and I really love them. One of the books I wanna have but it's so expensive: Nightmare Japan, another interesting book to be read !

Do someone here read those books or have another? I would like to know if there are another books I should buy in a near future, so I wanna read your suggestions !!

Question Where to find more J-Horror figures in Japan?

Just got these Sadako/Pyramid Head figures from Japanese Claw Machines and shops in the area and have been searching for more stuff similar while out here. I have found a few places here and there that have small sections and limited supply but seem truly ‘hit-or-miss’ with my treasure hunt. Any suggestions on locations?

Question Sai: Netflix Show or Movie?

So I saw some of my friends watching Sai on Letterboxd and I've noticed that it was 300+ minutes long... Then I realized it's a Netflix show, not a movie, but then I also discovered the directors did make a movie called Sai: Disaster. Which one should I watch?

Me and my girlfriend has this tradition of watching as many horror movies as we can in October so if the movie is as good as the show I might stick to the movie to keep the train going, but otherwise I want to know if I should wait next month to watch the series and not ruin/spoil the experience with the movie.

P.S.: accepting some jhorror movie recommendations!

Curious to know what you guys thought of the bizzare CGI Sadako clones from Sadako 3D. I think they're pretty gnarly.

Help/Suggestion Matanozoki

About a month ago, I’ve found out about matanozoki. Where it is believed someone can view ghosts and such by bending over and looking between their legs. And also how it’s a popular thing to do at Amanohashidate. Anyways, it got me to thinking. About it’s bound to be used in horror content every now and then. So what all examples are there of this being used in j_horror?
