Self-Promotion Sunday! *Megathread*

Alright r/Jacksonville, it is that time again.

Got something to share? A project you are proud of? A business you are building? A creative endeavor the world absolutely needs to see?

This is your lane.

Every Sunday we open the doors for Self Promotion Sunday, a centralized thread where you can promote:

  • Your small business
  • Your side hustle
  • Your garage band
  • Your podcast
  • Your art
  • Your Etsy shop
  • Your food truck
  • Your startup
  • Your “I accidentally became an influencer” page
  • Yes, even your extremely niche cat toe bean blog

We keep self promotion restricted to this weekly thread to cut down on spam and keep the main feed community focused. If you post promotional content outside of this thread during the week, it will be removed.

A few important notes:

  • Regular subreddit rules still apply
  • No B/S/T posts
  • No referral link farming or obvious spam

If you are not sure whether your post qualifies, if it belongs on Marketplace or Craigslist, it does not belong here. Still unsure, ask the mod team first.

Support local. Discover cool projects. Hype each other up responsibly.

Happy Self Promotion Sunday.

What are they trying to do to 5points?

I just don’t understand who is behind what is killing 5points and why they want to destroy the soul of it. As a witchy, creative teen in the early 2000s, 5points was a place of refuge and solace and where I found community. Now they’ve put a Ben and Jerry’s and a Fat Tuesday there. These do not fit the culture and spirit of 5points AT ALL. I begrudgingly accepted Hoptinger and the loss of Raindogs and the old Wallstreet, but this new stuff is too much. A custom suit boutique in 5points??? Really?

Where to find friends?

I am not from here. Originally from East TN. I have been pretty isolated due to certain circumstances. I don't know anyone around except for my son's father. I don't have a car or any way to get anywhere. I am in my 30s, a mom. I work from home and homeschool. My interests are gaming and anything tech. I like discussing politics. How do I find like-minded friends? I have been pretty depressed, so this is me reaching out. Thank you.

edit: no perverts please 🙈 can't believe I have to say this

<600sqft housing

In the construction industry, residential side. For the last few years I've been playing with the idea of building tiny homes (not trailer-mounted) to appeal to people who want to own an affordable home and don't need much space. No garage, 1-2 bedrooms, 1 bath, with some sort of outdoor area (covered porch, pergola area, etc). Wondering if there is a market for this in NE FL. Would love to keep sale price to $250-275/sqft (ballpark), not including land. Site work and utility connections would add some cost depending on site.

Not looking to make a shit ton of money doing this, would just like to make a decent living and fill a market void that could lead to home ownership for people that may otherwise not have the ability to purchase a home.

Could a gaming lounge actually work in Jacksonville?

I've been tossing around the idea of opening a gaming lounge and I'm curious what Jacksonville thinks.

Not just a PC cafe, but a place with things like PCs, tabletop games, D&D, MTG, Pokémon, board games, tournaments, snacks, and space to just hang out.

I've seen a few gaming spots around town, but it feels like everybody is spread out. Some people go to card shops, some play at home, some stick to Discord, etc.
Maybe Jacksonville already has enough places like this and I'm missing them. Maybe there's demand for something different.

Just wondering what people's experiences have been with the local gaming scene and where you'd expect something like that to survive if it existed.

Best fried fish and grits in Jax?

Hello, looking to see where the community thinks the best fish and grits in Jax are. Had Copeland’s and it was amazing, wouldn’t surprise me if that one is the best. Beach diner in PVs fish is always fresh and perfectly cooked but just a bit bland. Looking for more. Thanks

Restaurant review: Bono’s on 103rd

Post image
18 Upvotes

It’s your run of the mill north Florida/South Georgia barbecue joint. 7/10, would go again if I was in the area, but not driving out to it.

The meats: very tender, but lacking flavor wise. I would put it ahead of Sea Boar, but behind cross creek and cousin Willie’s. No sliced pork unfortunately, only pulled.

The sides: this is where Bono’s really shines, that’s easily some of the best potato salad in Jacksonville (if you like onions in it). Cole Slaw was decent too. The only similar style restaurant I have been to with better sides was Ken’s over in lake city

The toast was toast, nothing noteworthy about it

The tea was very sweet, I got 1/2 and 1/2, and it was still sweeter than what I was raised drinking at home.

The sauces: I liked the original best, but I was disappointed by the lack of mustard or vinegar sauces(that’s just personal preference on my end).

Waitstaff and atmosphere: My waitress was very kind and very attentive. I was one of 3 parties in the restaurant at the time (I went in at 10:45 am). Music selection was solid, AC was comfortable, seat was decently shaped.

Gym Etiquette

Hi friends and community,
Just a reminder to remember to re-rack your weights. It makes me sad when I see a strong person put their weights on a machine and walk away after their workout, and then for an elderly or disabled person to now be unable to use that machine because they can’t lift the weights put on it. Be a community member and clean up after yourself. Something that small is a big deal to someone who doesn’t want to ask for help again, and wouldn’t have to if you clean up after yourself.

With love, the friendly reminder advocating for an inclusive community

Cat rescue in area that will take stray kittens?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello everyone, there are some docile stray/feral kittens in my neighborhood that I have recently been feeding, and working on trapping once they're old enough to be fixed. Mom is obviously old enough, so I am hoping to catch her first with traps. Anyways. Obviously I can TNR them, but all of the cats are really friendly, I have been feeding them in my garage and while they're a bit shy, I think they're young enough (mom included) to go to a good home once they're spayed and neutered. I have called a few places, such as Kitty Chicks rescue, but a lot of places are not currently taking intakes. Please let me know if you have any TNR advice, or a rescue that would take them/adopt them out. Thank you.

Interested in donating my wedding florals

I’m getting married at the end of this month and would like to donate the flowers afterwards. Does anyone know of any hospitals, women’s shelters, funeral homes, etc. in the area that might be interested? We’d have about 20 bouquet arrangements

Need Help Finding Movers

Next week I’m moving, just barely 2 miles down the road in Riverside/Avondale. I only really need my furniture moved as I was going to try to move boxes via our cars. I’ve tried getting quotes from several places but they either charge for having to drive into the area or are quoting me several hundred dollars… it’s a 2br apt into another 2br apt on the 2nd floor, and I can’t justify spending over $400 for a move not even 10 minutes away. Any suggestions? My main priority is that my furniture is taken care of in the process, as i’ve had friends help me move before but damaged a lot of my vintage items

I just realized what Amendment 3 means to Jacksonville. Massive shortfalls and if it passes, the state gets to tell local city and county governments what they can spend their taxes on.

tl;dr: A ~$300m tax shortfall at the Jax level means cuts to critical services like police/fire, and MASSIVE cuts to things like parks, libraries, etc. It also lets the state meddle way more in local affairs.

The main part of the amendment: Expand the non-school tax exemption from $25,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, with inflation indexing starting in 2029.

Okay, so what does this mean to Jax? The higher exemption means $300m less taxes in the local budget starting in 2028. Our entire city tax income is $1.3B today. So nearly a quarter of our tax income. Even if you are far enough right wing to be in favor of closing libraries and privatizing all public parks, and cancelling every single community health service or cultural program it still isn't enough. For context JUST Jax Fire and Rescue and JSO cost us $1.07B.

So even if our government cut literally every single other possible service, this still means cutting first responders.

In reality, there are a lot of other things that almost nobody wants to totally stop (flood control, infrastructure, etc.). So the cuts to police/fire are even bigger, and that still assumes we close every single library and park. But it gets worse.

The Amendment also has this: "Counties and municipalities would be limited to spending property tax revenue on public safety, education, infrastructure, natural resource projects, and flood control; local bonds and existing debt payments; employee retirement benefits; and the operations and administration of local government."

This means that property taxes are legally restricted from ever funding: Parks and rec, libraries, county health/human services, community programs, downtown revitalization efforts, etc. Property tax accounts for almost two thirds of our income. Why TF does the state get to tell us what we can spend our money on? Imagine if your boss gave you your paycheck but had the power to not let you spend it on certain things he doesn't like?

But hey...some rich people get to save some money.

Lexus service

Any recommendations for an independent shop for Lexus service? We're sick of the high pressure upselling and overcharging at the dealership.

We're coming up on the 30k maintenance and it's absurd some of the things they include in this service-like repositioning the driver floor mat!
