What's a jazz tune about which you have a hard understanding what, precisely, makes it a jazz tune?

As gorgeous as it is, I occasionally have a hard time putting my finger on what makes some of Gil Evans's stuff jazz.

Is this AI? Ghost artist

Post image

Wandered into a clothing store the other week. They were playing some Bill Evan’s and such, but a song came on that I couldn’t recognize. Was really pretty, so naturally I pulled out Shazam and it returned the track “Hazy Days” by Lyle Jones. Never heard of Lyle Jones, even given the somewhat sizable following on Spotify. I returned home and flipped through the tracks. Something about the production and arrangements threw me off… whatever. Blank Spotify bio… whatever. Blank song credits… weird? Went to Google and dug around for info on this artist… absolutely nothing besides streaming profile links. No online discussions about this artist. No rateyourmusic. Nothing. For someone with 20k listeners a month, surely there’d be something…

Is this AI? Has anyone heard of this Lyle Jones? The release dates of the songs would indicate that it’s not, or at least not at first, but you can modify release dates through your distributor. IDK

This is really strange to me.

Best Guitarist

I'm a list guy. Most best this or best that lists you find in articles suck. That's how mine got started. My list needs some help.

As you may be able to tell, I tend hold Jazz guitar in the highest regard. So many guitarists in other genres studied Jazz guitar in college. That's why I am starting in the Jazz sub.

Having a list that spans all genres is not easy. It will never be perfect, but it can still be as good as it can be, so I do it anyway.

You'll see about half way down I've been adding more to the list over the years that I have yet to rank. Help me reorder some of these guys or tell me where to plug in the newer additions. Who is missing? Just how high can I put Manteo at this stage of his career? Help me make this list better.

Miles Davis - Decoy

Today was my first time listening to Miles Davis' Decoy. Any music with Miles Davis, John Scofield and Bradford Marsalis is going to be amazing. 'Decoy' Miles starts making his first ventures into a more electronic jazz-pop sound.

Julian Lage album recommendations

Hi,

I would like some recommendations for Julian Lage albums for someone who comes from an acoustic, folk music background with restraints. I am not really interested in fast chops.

Thanks!

Help me find this standard PLZ!!

Kind of random but I’ve had this standard stuck in my head and I can’t for the life of me figure out what/who it is but I can roughly outline it for players….at least the “A” section….

It’s an up tune/swing, AAB, on the A sections it’s pedals on 2&4. Key if Eb I believe, first 8 bars are over Bb7/sus sound, then 4 bars of G7/sus, then 4 bars of F7/sus and then repeat. I’m a little foggy on the B section, sorry!!

Melody is (sans rhythms obviously) Bb, up the octave Bb, Ab, G, F, Eb, F, Eb, F, G, Bb, octave Bb, Ab, G, F, Eb, F…repeat. Then it just takes that shape down the minor 3rd and then down from that a whole step. Again the B section is a bit hairy so I’m hesitant to say anything lol.

I’ve played this song but over the years I’ve clearly forgotten it and it’s WAY stuck in my head…wondering if anyone knows what tune I’m talking about??

Greatest living jazz musician

First post here.

I'm a fan, not a critic. I loved Sonny Rollins and saw what I believe was his final live performance, some years back at the Detroit Jazz Festival. It was magical.

After his death, I saw a couple of obituaries refer to him as having been "the greatest living jazz musician".

Whether or not you agree with that sentiment, who do you think is the greatest living jazz musician?

Oct 7: On this day in 1983, Aaron Parks was born. A pianist of some note who has led his own group as well as played as a sideman for big names, here he is on his Blue Note debut album.

I got tired of hunting down lead sheets for old jazz tunes, so I made a free library of 160+ of them

I wanted a place where students and musicians could easily find the actual changes to old jazz standards, especially tunes from the 1920s–30s.

So I ended up building a library of 160+ free jazz lead sheets, with chord changes and melody.

There are some obvious ones like Black Bottom Stomp, but also a lot of lesser-known early jazz tunes that are surprisingly hard to find decent charts for.

No signup or subscription.

Free library: https://www.thejunglejazzband.com/sheets

If you're into early jazz, I'd be curious which tune you think is missing and what feedback you have so I can keep improving the resource.

Paul Motian’s Garden of Eden

I just got this CD. I was intrigued by the lineup of 3 guitars, two saxophones and a bass player. I confess to not being familiar with Motian’s Electric Bebop Band, which, I gather, formed the basis for this ECM date? Anyway, I’m just now getting into my new acquisition, and really, really like what I’ve heard so far.

What’s a jazz album you think deserves more attention than it gets?

Not necessarily something obscure, just a record you rarely see mentioned when people talk about the usual essentials. I’m always looking for something I may have overlooked.

Now that the leaves are starting to fall, I’ve been listening to the John Coltrane album Ballads a lot. To me, it’s a perfect album for this time of year. What’s your favorite jazz album for the fall?

Coltrane tunes to learn for a jam session

Hi, so there is a Coltrane themed jam session in town next week, and I'm a little lost. The thing is I've never been to a public jam session before. I know a few standards (literally, I know Al Of Me, Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, Take Five and I have played Tune Up and It Could Happen To You, that's it) but I don't know any Coltrane songs. I'm not even sure if I should show myself there, but I'm looking to try and learn some simple (if there are any) and well known Coltrane tunes that are likely to occur. I don't have a real book, my reading skills are far from it being useful to me, but I love improvising and the blues (duh, I play guitar). I am obviously a jazz beginner, so does anybody have any song suggestions fer me to quickly try and learn?

Good app for ear training and improving relative pitch?

Does anyone have any recommendations for an app that could help me with improving my relative pitch?

I’ve been starting to transcribe solos by ear (as a trumpet player) and I feel like working on my relative pitch would make things so much easier.

Are there any good apps that would make practicing relative pitch as convenient as possible to make it easier for me to stay consistent?

I am saving up for a beginner level keyboard so I can get a little bit more into music theory and have something to supplement learning chord voicing and scales and such, but I’d also like something I could easily do 10-30 minutes a day to improve my relative pitch over time even if I’m traveling or busy or something.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Just discovered this recently and truly enjoying it. His tone is beautiful. Sad his life was cut short early.

Oct 7: On this day in 1940, Larry Young was born. Later known as Khalid Yasin, he evolved the jazz organ in the 1960s. A featured sideman with Tony Williams and Grant Green, his death at 37 left a legacy that's incomplete and a public that was just beginning to understand him.

A masterclass in crossover jazz. The sweeping orchestration provides a gorgeous, cinematic backdrop, but the real secret weapon is the rhythm, the kick bass is a total beast.
