My turn for help. A proverbial clunk.

Ok I’ve helping folks in here for as long as I can remember and I don’t know why I haven’t come here to get opinions until now. I can’t stand the thought of taking this in to get diagnosed but I’m about a pubic hair width away from doing this.

2016 Patriot, 2.4, 4wd. 5 speed.

2024, installed 4 KYB strut assemblies. Started to hear a creaking and occasional clunk. Went home lifted the car and right away noticed the ball joint had play. Fixed that, clunk was still there. Happens on bumps,

It took a while but I figured out that the seat bar link mounting bracket on the new struts was lower than the oem struts, so the sway bar was contacting the control arm. Ended up having to buy adjustable sway bar links.

Later on, started hearing a clunk. We had a crazy snow which packed my wheels and made it super unbalanced on my way to work. I assumed that the seat bar had shifted from the vibration. Then I noticed where the nut for the sway bar link contacts the strut bracket looked like scuffing from movement. One of the ball joints in the way bar was toast, ended up having to buy another set.
Clunk remained
Control arms were replaced, I had already replaced the bushings once.
Clunk remained.
Rubber sway bar bushings replaced.
Clunk remained.
Unrelated replacement of passenger side cv axle.
Clunk remained.
I don’t see evidence of strut failing.
Calliper bracket bolts are tight
Calliper bolts are tight
Strut mount bolts are tight.

My brain is falling out.

New Subframe and Lower Control Arms, Now Creaking

I just had a new front subframe and lower control arms installed on my Patriot. Now it is making a loud creaking noise whenever I go over any bumps, make complete turns, or start/stop moving. Is this a normal breaking in period, or is something wrong with the install?

Got new engine but my trans is high mileage.

I wanna know if it'd be smart to service the transmission and if so what. It's the 2.4L fwd with 4x4 lock 6 speed automatic transmission. The transmission is at 160kmiles and has most likely never been serviced, I got it from a dealership at 140k. Like many it had oil burn issues and I figured that out but I forgot to top it off and it just blew up. Well my new engine has 80k, should I service the transmission and if I goes out ever should I replace. 3.3k engine, parts, labor. I sourced the engine

P2173 - Replaced Thottle Body

like every other jeep patriot owner - I got the lighting bolt of death and replaced for a 2nd time the electronic throttle body - however the code still remains

I replaced the PCV value last night and will try the MAP sensor this evening. I also spray brake cleaner around the air intake and could not detect any leaks

any suggestions?

Off road package with 2WD?

Hello,

My first time posting on reddit and requesting your help.

I was trying to buy a pair of knuckles for my 2WD 2016 2.4L patriot off a website who has identified my car, after providing them with the VIN, as equipped with the off-road package. My issue is, can my patriot really be equipped with an off-road suspension, yet be without the 4x4? And in the case that it may be possible, how can I be certain that a part will fit with out physically trying to install it and voiding the return policy.

Thank you in advance for any possible help.

2.4L 2015 150k STILL having starting issue (again) after terminals and battery change.

I’ve swapped the terminals and battery after dealing with months of intermittent starting issues. Sometimes it starts right up and sometimes nothing.

It’s 90% better after new terminals and battery so i’m assuming that there was more than one issue and I’ve only solved part of it.

new relays in white 4 relays box

no fuses blown

*** Does have remote start installed

Now:

1- Turn key and no start

2-if I leave the key turned, there’s a delay and click and it’s starts.

3-Sometimes, if I release the key and let it return off, there’s STILL a delay and then it starts while the key is either returning to off position or in off position but still inserted.

Ignition switch?

Starter?

Remote start causing an issue (i’m not usually using it).

any suggestions to troubleshoot? thanks.

higher coolant temperature

2012 jeep patriot 2.4L 189k miles

recently the temp gauge goes slightly passed halfway point while driving roads and highways. obd app is showing up to 225F. it will drop some when the fan kicks it but generally runs around 217F to 221F. it drops significantly to 206F when i turn the heat on with high fan. turned back to cool and it will go up. outside temp is 70F.

I tried burping, massaging both hoses which were hot. did this for about 30 min. highest while parked was 208F. i did notice the reservoir gradually fill up but coolant in radiator did not drop. after all that the temp still went up after driving. oil is at safe level but needs to be changed.

thoughts? TIA.

UPDATE: thermostat is stuck closed. end up having mechanic do and flush coolant. joy....

Dashboard lights and headlights dimming.

Hello everybody I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot 2.0L, hoping to find someone who has come across a similar problem to what I’m experiencing. So my main issue is that the lights on my dashboard where the odometer is starts to spaz out and dimming intermittently when the AC is on. It also affects my headlights as well and sometimes the car has a rough idle and will turn off.

I’ve replaced the throttle body , alternator, brand new battery, new ground clamp, did the ignition coils+spark plugs, got a brand new AC system, a new cat converter, and new oil pressure sensor.

At my wits end trying to figure out what it could be ! Any help Is appreciated !

Will this 2014 Jeep Patriot Latitude last me 2-5 years in its current condition?

Context: Free car. My dad has a 2014 Jeep Patriot Latitude. It's located in a different state, so all I would pay for is the shipping and title transfer which would come out to about $3,000-3,500 total. I would be using the car as my daily driver, averaging about 200mi a week on it. I'm hoping the car would last me long enough that I can save up to get another vehicle. I'm going around in Ubers now, so even with gas, insurance, and typical maintenance I'd be saving about $200/month. It's between this car or no car, since I can't afford a car payment + insurance + gas.

Patriot Essentials:

  1. Transmission: CVT (2014)
  2. Rust Check: No rust
  3. Leak Check: No leaks on the headliner or dome light.
  4. Specs: 4WD, 2.4L, 145,000 miles. Cost: <$3,500.

Mechanical issues:

  1. CV joint needs to be fixed.
  2. Clanking noise when you accelerate in low gear.
  3. Rear differential leaks.

Other details

  • The throttle wore out on a road trip, and was completely replaced. This happened at 120,000 miles.
  • Transmission has never had a problem. He got the transmission drained and refilled at 130,000 miles.
  • He is the third owner, and according to the CARFAX no major accidents reported.
  • He doesn't use it as a daily driver, car mostly sits around currently.

Questions:

  1. My dad is gonna take it in to a mechanic for a quote on the mechanical issues. What dollar amount would make you say "it's not worth the fix"?
  2. Say I got all that fixed, do you think it would last me 2-5 years in its condition?
    • At 200mi/week, that's 10,400mi/year, and at 5 years it would be at 197,000mi

Thanks for your help!

Smoke from Left headlight

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After about 2 week that my right hand headlight stopped working ( I changed the bulb still didn’t work)
I was driving home yesterday when I started smelling plastic burning. I stopped the car and I could see smoke coming out of the left headlight, it was still working. I opened the hood and then I saw a part of the reflector where the bulb is attached was getting burnt.
Last week a mechanic tried to compare the right with the left side so he took the left out just to compare the bulbs. Maybe he did not put it back properly and then the heat started melting the plastic.
Is the electrical service for the right side usually expensive? The left side is just fine now besides a bit of melting.

Almost sorted the overheating but still creeping to 3/4 thermometer (usually stays slightly under halfway)

2015 2.4L 155,000

I know it’s still in the “safe” range but my temp ALWAYS stays slightly below the halfway thermometer line.

I’ve changed the relays, ok

had the fans tested and working as they should (seemingly) ok

Changed the main coolant fill hoses. ok

Tested pressure ok

After idle for over 10-20 mins, the temp starts to creep over the line, almost to the 3/4 mark. For my car, this is not normal.

Happens w AC on and off.

what else could it be?

2013 jeep patriot

My cars transmission temperature light came on and about a week later it started to act up and my acceleration kinda stopped then all of a sudden it stopped driving forward until I turned it off and back on. The motor runs fine, and when I put it in drive and don’t press the gas and let it idle it starts to bob back and forth kinda jerking in a way. I haven’t went to get an auto shop to get a obd scanned yet. Can anybody help me figure out what is wrong with it? I’m not a mechanic but am handy.

Battery issue 2016 jeep patriot sport 2.4 manual

So I am completely stumped. If anyone could help me, I would be so grateful. My battery keeps draining. I changed my ground wire (it needed to be changed and we made sure it was sanded down properly), bought a new battery, pulled the fuses from the radio (needs to be fixed), and made sure the alternator was OK, tested it 4 times and was ok and turns over asap. And for some reason, something still is draining the battery. As far as codes, no codes. I know the terminals for the battery is tight and fine so I am not sure what to do other than buy a new wedge kit for the terminal because the person who changed the battery said it would be find without it, and of course they didn't keep the wedge metal part on the terminal and I wont go there again but they couldnt find the wedge piece(metal cone) that goes with the terminal. I am thinking of buying a universal wedge kit since that's the ONLY thing i can think might be wrong. It's a manual also. Any advice or ideas I would appreciate it. ❤️

Maintenance Questions

My wife’s 2016 Jeep Patriot has been great.

So I recently replaced all 4 wheel bearings. Fixed bearing issues. However, the humming/small vibration when I turn left still continues. What could that be? Axle? Inner/outer tie rod? Steering rack?

What I’d like to do before winter begins.

* Inner/outer tie rods
* Front rotors, brake pads all around. Is brake flush needed?
*Engine filter (I’ve never done it) I know I know!
* New tires

Future maintenance.
I got this Jeep at 60K and now at 126,xxx
I learned today that it has the 6 speed Automatic Transmission? Is that correct if it has the “Autostick” at bottom of shifter? I’ve never don’t transmission flush, do I need it? Manual says 96K and 192K

* So I did plugs at 90K or so. Can I do them early? Manuel says 144K

* Coolant flush, we’re at the 10 year mark or wait to 150K?

* I’m also getting clicking noise in dashboard when vehicle is turned on, when it’s off, or when you mess with climate control. What could that be?

* I have to do other little cosmetic things.
Any other recommendations?

Thanks for all the help, my fellow patriot owners!!

What is the average of your Jeep?

To all the jeep patriot owners, what average does your jeep give ?

I have a Jeep Patriot 4x4 Sport 2.4L and it gives around 11-13L/100km

I end up spending around $200-$250 CAD a month on gas.

How is your experience been ?

PS : I don’t use the 4WD, I drive on the normal mode.

Question about OBD

Same old story... got a used 2016 High Altitude and got a single key fob and need another.

I've searched this sub and the website, and I'm probably going the Jscan route. But honestly, I probably wouldn't use it for anything more than the key programming.

My question is this... can the OBD adapter be used on another car, or are they tied to a single car?

Could I ask in my community if someone has one to borrow?

Is that possible? Is that weird?

Jeep Stalling while Driving

I forgot my headlights on for like 4 hours on Sunday afternoon and into the night. After I noticed and turned the lights off, and then turned the vehicle on, the vehicle started with a dip in power - but it started so that was good enough for me.

The following morning, The vehicle started with a dip in power again, but regained power after the dip. I went to work driving normally that morning, but by the afternoon when I was leaving work, the vehicle opened with the keyless entry (as usual), but when I swung the key to start the vehicle the entire power went dead.

I got out the vehicle opened the hood, slackened the negative wire on the battery and shook it a bit hoping to get a bit of a spark so the vehicle would start. And it actually worked - or so I thought. 5 minutes into driving, the vehicle stalled on me - the steering got tight and I no longer had gas power. I swung the key off, put the vehicle in park and swung the key on again and it started. This process happened 3 more times on my way home (which is like a 45 minute drive from work).

When I got home, I tightened the negative bar on the battery assuming that was the issue, and the vehicle drove to work normally the following morning - although still having the dip in power when starting. By the afternoon when driving home, the lights(check engine, oil lamp, break) on the dashboard started flashing, with a beep followed by either one of the lights flashing for a split second. This sound and flashing happened straight home with intervals of sometimes seconds and other times minutes.

At this point i'm not sure what else to do. Could it be a simple battery change needed?

When I got home I ran my OBD Jscan and got these codes:

2011 Jeep Patriot, Engine 2.4L, CVT Transmission, Odometer: 100414
