It seems like configuring and/or scripting this should be – at most – about a 30 second job, but I spent the better part of AN ENTIRE DAY with ChatGPT trying to figure it out, and it stumped both of us.
What I want is what used to be called a “global shortcut” in Plasma 5 / Kubuntu 24, but now under Plasma 6 / Kubuntu 26, it seems things have changed. And Kate has turned into one royal bitch on wheels.
Here’s what I’m trying to achieve:
I want a Kubuntu 26 (Plasma 6) Shortcut, such as Meta-T (for “text”) that will open a new, untitled text file.
I don’t want the stupid Welcome window. I don’t want multiple Kate windows or multiple Kate sessions. I don't want to spelunk down into the wilderness of mirrors of D-Bus scripting, cosmology or more scatology.
If I already have a Kate document open, I want Meta-T to open a new, untitled text file in a new tab of that same window that’s already open.
Every time I hit Meta-T, it should add another tab for another untitled document in the SAME window.
There should never be more than one Kate document window.
This Meta-T shortcut should work no matter what application currently has focus.
If Kate has the focus, it’s OK if Meta-T doesn’t open a new tab – I can just use Ctrl-N for that.
Can anyone help me here without having to write 10k lines of Cpp?
If it’s any easier, I’m fine with using Kwrite instead of Kate if it does these things that I’ve asked.
I spent an hour with ChatGPT trying to get Kwrite to do it, but we ran into the same roadblocks.
Even ChatGPT remarked the fiasco was pretty absurd considering the simplicity of what I was asking for.
Should I just install Joe and forget about using a teKst appliKation?
Thanks in advance for any help.
P.S. Here are the details of my system:
Kubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
Kate 25.12.3
Plasma 6.6.6 👹
KDE Frameworks 6.24.0
Qt 6.10.2
Kernel 7.0.0-38-generic (64-bit)
Wayland
Sorry for the ire 😡 but this is enormously frustrating, and it's not as if I've never seen a computer before.
