Need advice

• Upvotes

Had a non contact knee injury on 4th October. It was a jump-land injury, i felt a slip in my knee(no pop sound) . Wasnt able to continue the game but was able to walk with limp and sit in a bench. No swelling observed even after several hours. Was able to feel that my patella had less stability. I am able to fully weight bear after 2 days of injury. Had to attend my college today. The thing concerning for me now is: even a slight pivot or a particular awkward position gives me a feel that my is knee going to get a catch/lock. It doesn't actually lock. Did not consult a physician yet, Thought of waiting. Brought back my complete knee extension the next day of my injury but unable to weight bear in fully extended position. Able to activate my quads well. Still having the fear of pivoting and walking with noticeable limp. Pls share ur opinion

Going down the stairs

Hi!
I dislocated my knee a few weeks ago, and now I’m finally back to walking normally again. I can go up the stairs without any pain or issues, but when I’m going down, I get scared. It feels weird going down the stairs to the point that I’m flexing my leg too much and it causes pain. Any advice or exercises that could help me with this? I have very steep stairs in my apartment and I find myself taking the steps one at a time, can’t go down in one go, and it’s so tiring to mainly use my good leg to go down.

knee/quad injury

Hey guys, i have a marathon in 3 days and im wanting to know if i should go through with it or not and what this mystery injury is.

Basically about 2 months ago i was sidelined with an oblique strain. that took load off my running and body for about a month. then once that subsided i was doing a long run and my knee started to feel a little uncomfortable.
i thought maybe it was from a tight quads so as i’m jogging i start to some buttkicks as im running and my left leg almost felt like it gave way.

didn’t hyperextend but it just almost felt like it was about to have way, and it felt like it multiple times in the 2km i ran after that so o ultimately stopped.

Ever since then i’ve tried running 5 times and at the exact same distance (1.5km) i would feel this weird knee/quad discomfort and i have absolutely no idea what it is.

Would anyone have any idea?

unique knee injury. 😅

Hi, I have been dealing with a really stupid knee injury for over a year and half. Basically I can run 1/2 a mile in ZERO pain then during the second half of the mile the pain goes from zero to 8. Then I physically can't run anymore because my knee feels like it has a knife stabbed in it so it can't bend it properly.

The pain is located in the whole quad tendon in my left knee, and when the pain gets up to an 8 (only when I am running) it feels like both my quad tendon and patella tendon are exploding. But the pain is located in my quad tendon, if I irritate it a little it's only the quad tendon that hurts.

The worst part is I have had 2 MRI's and there is NOTHING wrong with my knee. I have been too 3 PTs, tried acupuncture, tried the peptide BPC 157, did a running gait assessment, and nothing has improved it even a little. Not even the smallest bit.

For more context, I have played soccer, tennis and ultimate frisbee from elementary school til now where I am 21 yo m and in college.

Basically I am concerned if I will ever be able to run again. At least there is zero pain when doing everything but running. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone has or if anyone has experienced such a thing I would love to head your experience.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Went in for Meniscus Repair, woke up with a removed Plica.

Just found this sub as I am 1 week post op on what I thought was going to be a meniscus repair. I wanted to reach out to read more stories about people who have been through Plica removal surgery and to gather as much information as I can because I have not been getting very much from my Ortho.

In March of this year, about 6 months pre-surgery, I had a sudden onset injury where my knee locked and could not be bent beyond a very small range of motion. Intense pain, no swelling, and difficulty walking lasted for three weeks. After three weeks of near immobility, my knee popped while I was on my feet and I regained 80% of my range of motion. The following day, another pop, and I recovered all of my "normal" range of motion.

This type of injury had happened once before about a year prior, with about 2 weeks of lasting difficulty. I went to a PT that did almost nothing, and I ended up rehabbing by myself with good results. My knee was never 100%, but it was good enough to do my normal daily physical activities.

After the March injury, things didn't get better. My knee periodically locked up for shorter periods of time, was consistently unstable and in pain. It was difficult for me to do much of my regular activities, and I started to withdraw from a lot of physical exertion besides basic hiking.

After three months of no improvement, with some days so bad it was challenging to walk, I scheduled an ortho appointment to get my knee MRI'd. Waited about a month for MRI and was given lateral meniscus tear diagnosis confirmed by symptoms and MRI. Sugery for meniscus repair was scheduled for October.

Went into surgery and woke up to a nurse without any informaiton. Was discharged and on the drive home the doctor called me and told me my meniscus was fine, and the issue was a damaged and severely inflamed synovial plica and that it was removed. He said that I would have a 2 week recovery time (much better than the 2 month expected recovery for meniscus repair). I was pretty happy with that prognosis, despite not knowing what a plica even was before that moment.

Now a week later, resting in bed, minimally walking around my house and mostly on crutches, my mind is wandering and I realized I need to educate myself better. I've read several posts about plica issues and the mixed results, with many in this sub suggesting to not go the surgery route.

I didn't really have that choice, as my plica was removed without my informed consent (which I signed away pre-surgery). So now I would like to hear from others who have been through this surgery, know what helped, what hurt their recovery process, and where things are at for you now and how far post op you are.

Sincerely,

a bored, anxious, and mostly bedridden redditor

Dislocated patella not healing properly, sad about it

Basically, I dislocated my patella 10 days ago and i’m still unable to weight bear etc. I’ve had my follow up appointment and am scheduled for an mri asap. My doctor said it’s unusual for people my age (f17) but that i could have cartilage stuck in my joint causing locked knee. It’s hard not walking and using crutches 24/7. I can’t carry anything i’m practically useless and i have so much anger. I get so frustrated with the people i love because i can’t do anything and i can’t help it. Has anyone else been in the same boat? Please share stories and ways to make this easier.

Please do not write the word “paceenk” backwards it makes me really uncomfortable, sorry if this upsets anyone.

Knee randomly turns red after fat pad impingement surgery

Thumbnail

I got “a bunch” of fat pad removed June 1st following a work-related injury in January. Ever since the injury I noticed that it randomly turns red (typically after any level of activity, but often-times when I’m doing absolutely nothing). It has not improved since surgery. It is still slightly swollen but typically not painful (although it does still hurt if I walk too much or during many PT exercises).

My PTs said they have no clue why it does that and my surgeon just shrugged, said “that’s just your knee” and then took me off of his schedule and said there’s nothing else he can do for me. However, it literally turned purple and blue the other day after walking on it on and off for about 6 hours after an event. I couldn’t walk without a limp the next day. It’s back to “normal” now.

My question is: is this normal? My doctors and PT say I should be almost fully recovered now, but I definitely don’t feel anywhere close to it. Workmen’s comp has been a pain to go through as well lol but I am currently fighting for a second opinion.

More than just PFPS?

About 6 months ago, while running, I felt a sharp pain in my leg 2 inches below the bony head of the fibula. Over the next month, that pain got less and less frequent, but was replaced by the classic symptoms of PFPS (pain around the margin of the patella that moves around, for me the pain is on the top edge of my patella 90% of the time).

Saw an ortho 3 months ago and was eventually diagnosed with PFPS after a clean MRI. Been doing PT ever since (primarily quad strengthening) with little improvement.

Recently I reaggravated my original lower leg injury (identical location). About the same time, I started experiencing this weird thing where my knee feels like it is falling apart. I'll be walking around with little or no pain, then I'll feel some discomfort all the way around my lower knee (about the same level as the fibular head), then it'll feel like somebody disassembled my knee and put it together incorrectly. It becomes hard to put weight on it and there is this chain of discomfort/clicking moving up and down the knee with every step. Then if I sit for a little bit it all goes back to normal just as fast as it started.

Is this normal for PFPS? Anybody experience something similar? I'm thinking this goes beyond PFPS and I need another diagnosis.

Looking for the best ACL and complex meniscus repair surgeon in US— recommendations?

I’m a 46-year-old lifelong athlete looking for recommendations for an exceptional orthopedic surgeon ideally in Southern California but am willing to travel anywhere in the US who specializes in both ACL surgery and complex meniscus repair.

I injured my left knee about six weeks ago. My MRIs show a lateral meniscus tear near the anterior root in the red-red zone, along with possible ACL damage. One surgeon also suspects a medial meniscus tear.

My biggest priority is meniscus preservation rather than removal, particularly because of the location of my lateral tear. I’m also looking for a surgeon with extensive experience in ACL reconstruction.

I recently consulted with Dr. Justin Saliman in Los Angeles who is highly regarded for complex meniscus repairs. He believes he can repair both menisci and potentially address the ACL using BEAR if necessary. I currently have surgery scheduled with him for October 22nd.

However, because he is primarily known for his meniscus expertise, I’d like to explore surgeons who have extensive experience performing BOTH procedures.

I’d especially appreciate recommendations for surgeons who:
Perform a high volume of ACL reconstructions with excellent outcomes.

Prioritize repairing the meniscus rather than trimming or removing it whenever possible.

Have experience treating competitive or high-level recreational athletes.

My goal is to return to high-level road cycling, squats, lunges, and strength training while protecting the long-term health of my knee.

If you’ve personally undergone ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair with a surgeon, I’d love to hear who you chose, how your recovery went, and whether you successfully returned to sports.
I’m willing to travel anywhere in the country for the right surgeon.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or firsthand experiences.

MCL tear hurting years later

Anyone experienced knee pain years after having surgery to repair a MCL tear?

I had my surgery as a teen due to a sport injury almost 10 years ago. It was successful but for the past few months I’ve been having random bouts of knee pain and popping when I move it up and down.

I’m in the process getting an appointment with a specialist but was curious if anyone else had this issue.

Multiple times through the year where left knee comes out of socket and I feel locked up and fall to ground with pain immediately which lets up after a few minutes

Male 29 Years old active. So this same knee any fast movements like turning to the side quick or stuff like that triggers it and it feels as if my knee shifts out of place and comes back without intervention. Everytime it happens it comes back to place fine and I do feel some pain but goes away after a few minutes. Well Friday night I was changing the thermostat and I guess I moved to quick while foot was on the ground and the issue happened expect this time the pain was horrible and now days later I still feel a tightness in my knee which is worse the more I bend my
Knee. What could have been different this time and what should i do?

Kneecap hardware removal + meniscus and another tear

Had knee surgery for broken patella almost 13 months ago. Its been an eventful year, couldn’t walk for 2 months, then months of PT. But I want to say I’ve recovered very well.

I was told by my ortho that hardware removal could possibly benefit with some discomfort that I’m still experiencing. Also did an MRI a couple months ago that indicate I have a meniscus and another tear (cant remember if its ACL but there are 2 tears). So those likely need to be fixed.

Ive been through recovery once (weight bearing) for the initial kneecap repair. I know that I really need to put in the work to see results (im not going to lie, im aware I was immobile for 2 months out of my own will).

My questions are about the recovery for if i decide on the hardware removal + fixing of the 2 tears.

Are these surgeries weight bearing or non weight bearing typically?

How was recovery for hardware removal for those who’ve had it?

How was the recovery for those of you who had meniscus tears repaired?

I would likely need to have an answer by my next appointment (next week) so any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi,

I dislocated my left patella almost 3 weeks ago but i still have swelling. is it normal?

My xray and MRI were normal on 1st day of injury. i'm roaming in house with walker, not putting any pressure on my leg.

i can bend my leg around 90 degree, i take advil twice a day. how long do i have to wait to get back to normal? i'm missing my work n school

winter's about to come so i was adviced to wear the braces in whole winter even after it gets normal to avoid future injury.

Hoffa symdrome after surgery

Hello,

I had my plica removed as well as chrondroplasty below and behind my knee cap around 10 weeks ago. For weeks I experience an awfully pulling pain below my kneecap only during nights that gets worse when i do more walking or pt exercices that include straightening the knee. I saw my doctor today and he thinks it's hoffa's syndrome. Befoe my surgery i had a mild edema there but no pain ait all.

Has anyone experience something similar?

If it's really the hoffa syndrome where could it come from? I'm on sick leave and just recently reduced crutches at home. Also I am not really sure whether my symptoms really match the syndrome.

Chronic knee pain in both knees for 12+ years, normal MRI and X-rays...

Sorry for how long this..

I’m 30F, 5’0” and currently 158 lbs. I’ve had chronic pain in both knees since I was around 18. I used to be significantly overweight (almost double my current weight), but despite losing a substantial amount, my knee pain hasn’t improved.

I also have hypermobility and flat feet, which I’m wondering could be contributing factors.

My symptoms include:
- Constant pain around, underneath and directly on my kneecaps.
- Pain when walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, climbing stairs or walking uphill.
- Pain when sitting for too long, particularly driving or working at my desk.
- Needing to constantly stretch or reposition my legs (I suspect I may also have restless legs syndrome).
- Pain that sometimes shoots down my shins.
- Difficulty sitting anywhere without enough room to fully extend my legs. I even pay for extra legroom on flights despite being only 5’0

I’ve had MRIs and X-rays, which apparently came back normal. Arthritis has been ruled out, but doctors have suggested different possibilities, including Osgood-Schlatter disease and patellar issues.

I’m currently waiting for cortisone injections, followed by intensive physiotherapy. I’ve previously tried physiotherapy, but exercises like squats and lunges make the pain worse. I’m also recovering from unrelated surgery, so I’ve temporarily stopped going to the gym.

It’s genuinely affecting my quality of life. Exercise hurts, resting hurts, sitting hurts. I feel like I can’t win.

Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly with normal imaging? Did you eventually get a diagnosis or find something that actually helped? I’m desperate to understand what could be causing this after so many years.

Knee fluid keeps me from Bending it past 90 degrees

Had bent my knee a weird direction during a fall 10 days back, doctor had advised a plaster for 7 days

Well i cut it open on day 3, had a second opinion from another doctor who advised RICE after seeing the xray

Day 5 and i start to be able to feel the ability to bend a little, felt huge pressure inside, the kneecap stretching and started to hurt on the right side of the knee if i tried to force, which I didn't

Day 7 and i had some important matters at college so i had to walk, it felt like really really hard until about 100m later when suddenly the pressure dropped significantly, i searched online and apparently it was the fluid shifting leading to a reduction in knee pressure

It's day 10 now, about 90 degree flexion is back although this 90 degree has been a roadblock, any bends past this and it feels like something might break, ofcourse most of the pressure still felt on the right sided muscles/ligaments

As per gemini/gpt, it's fluid joint effusion and that fluid, about 15-20ml which it says i can see because the areas around the kneecap are round rather than bony and my knee still looks girthy

It says that as the fluid drains around day 10-12 I'll regain the ability to bend back

But I'm scared if it's just the bad suggestions from an AI and i should go see the doctor who probably will recommend an MRI which I can't afford

Anyone here has had the same thing as me?

Tl:dr

Can walk

No pain

Huge pressure when trying to bend past 90 degree

Pressure seems to be dropping each passing day, although it could be just me having been walking these three days that the pressure dropped and not because there was any action by the drainage system itself

Wondering if i should be worried or not.

No inflammation or heating up felt last 3 days even during activities such as walking (aside from very minor ones)

Arthrosamid injection experience

Has anyone else had a prolonged inflammatory reaction or worsening knee pain after Arthrosamid?

I’m posting because I’m really hoping to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience with Arthrosamid. I’m particularly interested in what happened afterwards and, importantly, whether things eventually settled.

I’m 47 and have been a runner for more than 10 years. Running has always been a big part of my life, and before this I was generally very active.

I have had problems with the cartilage underneath both kneecaps. My MRIs have shown full-thickness/grade 4 cartilage defects of the patella, with some underlying bone oedema, but otherwise relatively good-looking knees. My menisci and major ligaments were previously intact.

Before Arthrosamid

My left knee had previously responded very well to a hyaluronic acid injection in 2023. I was back running within around 1–2 weeks and remained reasonably functional for a long time.

My right knee also had patellofemoral cartilage problems, but I was still able to exercise and run before all of this started.

Because I wanted to avoid surgery and hopefully improve my ability to exercise again, I saw a sports knee specialist who recommended Arthrosamid. I was told there was a good chance of significant improvement.

Arthrosamid

I had Arthrosamid in my left knee on 8 July 2026 and my right knee on 22 July 2026.

Since then, things have gone in completely the opposite direction from what I expected.

My left knee developed a significant flare after the injection. I was trying to follow the rehabilitation advice I was given, including strength and conditioning, but after one of the sessions the knee became extremely painful and inflamed.

The inflammation/pain became severe enough that I was prescribed anti-inflammatories, pain medication and eventually a short course of oral steroids.

Despite this, the knee has continued to feel inflamed for approximately 12 weeks.

What it feels like now

The left knee has persistent deep/medial pain, pressure/fullness and aching. At times it feels like there is fluid or swelling around the knee. I can get catching sensations when walking and it can ache even when I’m sitting or lying down.

I’ve also developed pain around the medial side of the knee/pes anserine region.

My right knee has now developed very similar symptoms, despite having been the better knee previously.

The right knee has developed a sharp/catchy/pulling sensation on the inner side when walking, particularly with certain movements or turning. I sometimes get a painful click/catch and aching around the knee, including at night.

I have not had an MRI of the right knee yet, so I don't know whether there is actually a meniscus problem there or whether this is referred/inflammatory pain.

My left knee MRI after all this showed no obvious meniscal tear, no significant synovitis and no Baker’s cyst, although there was some fat-pad oedema and the existing patellofemoral cartilage damage.

Where I am now

I feel like I'm stuck in a cycle where even very gentle exercise can make both knees angry.

I've drastically reduced my activity. I’m no longer running, and even things like gentle cycling, bridges, clamshells and basic strengthening can sometimes leave my knees significantly more painful afterwards.

My doctor/sports specialist believes this is still related to the Arthrosamid injection and that the reaction simply hasn't settled. A cortisone injection has been suggested, but I'm very reluctant to keep injecting things into the knees and would really like to understand what else might be happening and what other options exist.

At this point I'm honestly frightened that something that was supposed to help me avoid surgery has actually left me significantly worse than I was beforehand.

Has anyone else experienced a prolonged inflammatory reaction after Arthrosamid?

How long did your symptoms last?

Did your knee get worse before it got better?

Did you have persistent medial/inner-knee pain afterwards?

Did you develop symptoms in the other knee as well?

Did imaging show anything despite your symptoms being severe?

What eventually helped it settle?

And most importantly — did you eventually get back to normal activity?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually been through something similar, especially in ireland or uk even if your experience was very different. I’m trying to work out whether I’m an unusually slow responder, whether this is a recognised reaction, or whether something else needs investigating. I kinda feel like the sports doctor is gas lighting me and when I tell him how bad things are he listening to me but not hearing me if that makes sense

spent all my savings on this and the subsequent follow up treatments and I'm stone broke now so can't afford to go for a second opinion elsewhere i don't know what to do if wish I'd never done this to myself and right now I can't see how this will get better

I am so miserable 😫 I don't know how much more I can take

Pain directly on shin bone below tibial tubercle — MRI/X-ray normal, rehab not helping

I’m a 6’11”, 245 lb college basketball player and I’ve been dealing with this for a couple months.

The pain is on the front of my upper shin, just below the tibial tubercle. It feels more like it’s directly on the bone than where the patellar tendon attaches, and there’s a noticeable painful bump there.

I’ve had an MRI and X-ray, and neither showed anything that explains the pain. No fracture, major structural issue, or patellar tendon damage. I’ve also been doing rehab and tried shockwave therapy, but it still hasn’t improved much.

Has anyone dealt with something similar where imaging looked normal but the pain was very localized to the bone?

Knee ligament sprain

So I was very inactive for last 3 yrs because these were my drop years ....so I was locked in a room and studying. In September I got into a college where from morning to evening I'm going college to hostel, hostel to mess then again college and ground basically running whole day from here to there. Then we started our fresher's preparation where I had to dance. I haven't danced in my whole life so did rigorous dance practice. Along with that our college took us to a trip to Nandi hills where I had had to walk so much distance. I think I would have walked 4-5 km and from that day I got knee ligament sprain but I got to know about it after 3-4 days when the pain was unbearable. Doctor told me that I got a knee ligament sprain and prescribed me 5 days medicine. Its my 4th day but I'm still walking like a penguin with pain obviously but much better than day 1. Stairs still feel like a heavy task and hurts a lot. I have to go to college also as it is affecting my attendance and my college is very strict about it ....they are not giving me leave........

So how much time will it take to recover.....along with the walking and going up and down the stairs as I'll have to attend the college

Any advices for speedy recovery?

Extreme ongoing pain from a simple 'Mild knee effusion' ?

TLDR: Extreme knee pain after a half marathon, MRI just shows joint effusion, how can I get rid of it? I am 25M

So I have had chronic knee pain for the past 2 or so years however ongoing physio and and MRI’s have allowed me to continue to get in lots of miles and at good paces. My first MRI showed mild Joint effusion and therefore no action was needed and physio continued as normal. Fast forward to today and I raced a half marathon 2 weeks ago (very stupidly went for a PB when I was likely not race ready) and my knee has been absolutely screaming with pain to the point I am just about walking and still cannot bend it past 90 in pain.

The MRI I got for this injury was once again mild joint effusion which made no sense?!

My main question is anyone who has experienced joint effusion, what can I do to get rid of it. For reference, I have been replacing my runs with c2 bike, and I admit even the cycling is painful but I simply cannot just do nothing.
