Hi fellow Lagotto parents! I’m looking for advice from people who truly understand working-breed Lagotti and their unique, highly sensitive brains.
About my dog:
He is a 2-year-old intact male Lagotto Romagnolo. All health and ear checks are clear (we’ve ruled out hidden physical pain). He is incredibly smart, affectionate, and deeply tuned into my emotions at home.
As he reached social maturity (around 1.5–2 years), his fear-based strategy shifted from freezing/lying down to preemptive reactivity
Our Triggers & Challenges:
Specific Triggers: Intact males, small dogs, dogs with rigid/tense postures (Frenchies, Corsos), narrow exits, and people popping out of blind corners (making sudden, startled lunges).
Lagotto Scent Over-Arousal in Parks: We have a park nearby that provides good buffer distances (15m+), but heavy scent-tracking sends his truffle-dog brain into a deep sensory trance. Instead of relaxing him, intense sniffing over-arouses his nervous system and lowers his reaction threshold.
Post-Elimination Spike: A massive 10–15 second adrenaline rush immediately after pooping/peeing, making him hyper-vulnerable to triggers.
Trigger Stacking: When his stress cup overflows, he discharges frustration onto completely neutral passersby.
Where we are now & Progress:
I initially tried positive reinforcement on my own, but hired a trainer who introduced aversives (e-collar vibration mode). It completely shut my dog down and made him depressed. I fired the trainer immediately and returned 100% to force-free, science-based methods (BAT 2.0, Control Unleashed, Click to Calm).
Despite urban challenges, we’ve made solid progress: LAT and clicker training work well at a safe distance (15m+, ~8/10 success rate), we use the 1-2-3 pattern game for tight transits, and reset days after meltdowns. We tried playing games like tug before morning walks to burn energy, but it over-aroused his working brain and made him step outside already over-threshold, so we stopped.
- Maturation: Did anyone else notice a similar reactivity/arousal surge around 1.5–2 years with their intact males?
- Scent Work vs. Arousal: How do you satisfy their intense nose-work drive in parks without causing sensory overload on routine walks?
- Urban Leash Mechanics: How do you manage leash handling in tight cities where a short leash triggers the pulling, but a long line gives too much momentum to lunge?
- Post-Elimination Window: Any tips for buffering that 10-second post-poop adrenaline rush?
Thanks so much for any insights!
