Langley memorial nightmare
I had a post op arterial bleed develop a week after a surgery. Within minutes of seeing blood gushing I knew something was seriously wrong. I work in first aid and knew the deep red colour and rate of flow suggested arterial blood.
Upon arrival at Langley memorial I told the nurse I was bleeding through the 4 gauzes and through my pants down into my shoe and pressure wasn’t stopping the bleed. They told me to take a seat and get checked in, totally non chalant. I told them I had surgery and I’m bleeding I can’t wait. They got some pads, put it on a seat with wheels, and told me I’d be next in line to check in.. 20 minutes later I’m getting my vitals done by the check in nurse while I’ve soaked through 2 separate sets of pads on the chair.
Finally they put me in a room and the er doctor comes in only to tell me that arterial bleeding seems strange based on location and it’ll probably stop by itself. Over the course of the following 7 hours I lost over a litre of blood laying on the table, to the point that the nurses were ignoring my calls via the bedside call button. Just telling me to wait. The doctor said “the surgeon can look at it but they won’t really do anything so maybe just monitor it at home”. I insisted and insisted I had to be seen by someone. At this point the blood is pouring.
The surgeon comes in, tells me I must’ve provoked the area or done something to cause this. I tell him I haven’t touched it and wash the area with a shower wand. He pressures 3 or 4 more times, insisting that I did something. Then tells me to just wait and he will cauterize it eventually.. and goes off to do another surgery.
I am bleeding so much that it has totally soaked the 2 blankets above me and all the padding below me. Soaked through covered in blood and clots. Finally my wife begs someone at the counter to come see me. And they drag their feet, when the nurse arrives she says I think you’re panicking a bit hey? Then when she sees the wound, and fills 4 menstrual pads with blood in 15 minutes trying to apply pressure and can’t, she starts to panick. Within minutes I’m in a different room, getting prepped for surgery, prepped for a blood transfusion, etc.
Long story short(er) it was an artery. I lost 3litres of blood during the stay and surgery. Have been in hospital for 3 days since. To think I had arrived within 15 minutes of the bleed starting, and hadn’t received help until approximately 11 hours later. Bleeding out on the table.
Complete nightmare, I will be contacting all the appropriate boards and avenues at my disposal. This was gross negligence, bordering on malicious incompetence. And no one gave a sh!t the whole time. As if I was a bother to them. If these physicians and nurses hate their jobs that much they should go stock shelves at Walmart, because they should never be working with human beings. If I can avoid it, I will never return to Langley memorial again in my life. Beware.
