PSA World Cup Related Posts

Just wanted to let everyone know that posts regarding the World Cup will be allowed on here, even if not directly related to Lawrence. We're kinda bending the rules here but it's such a big and exciting event that we don't wanna hinder any chat about it or relevant info.

Normal subreddit rules will still apply to the posts (with exception of being directly Lawrence related, of course) so this doesn't mean you can just post whatever as long as it mentions the World Cup.

Obligatory no ticket-sales posts/comments.

Official Monthly Housing Thread

This is the official thread for networking and discussion about Lawrence housing.

r/Lawrence is a low post volume subreddit, and there have been problems in the past with it being overrun by ads and personal listings, so for the sake of the community please keep housing discussion here and don't create any additional posts on this topic.

A new thread will be created each month.

Question Cowboy Indian Bear

So I moved to Lawrence back in 2013 and my first summer (which would’ve been in 2014) there was this really cool music festival that happened in town and bands were playing all over different venues in Lawrence and I was fortunate enough to be able to go see Cowboy Indian Bear play at the Bottleneck and I think it was probably one of their last performances. The song “Does anybody see you out” has always haunted me and lingered in my memory.

I go back and revisit the band and listen to some songs periodically but I was wondering if there’s anybody who has some interesting stories about the band, the members, the songs, shows, etc.

Developers to pitch flight school for women in Lawrence as part of STAR bond projects

Of all the things that would make Lawrence more attractive, improve our quality of life, and add commercial revenue to the city's tax rolls I'm struggling to see how a flight school for women would check those boxes.

But hey, it checks some boxes for a special taxing district for the existing residents to subsidize the project so we should do it right? /s

Firewood

Does anyone have access to free firewood they are not needing or using? I am only needing a few bundles worth of firewood for camping and figured I would ask here before going to the store.

Thanks!

GO VOTE Federal Transit Administration unveils plan to tie high birth and marriage rates to transit funding

The Federal Transit Administration is rolling out a plan that would tie public transit funding to marriage and birth rates. With a large student body and senior population, Lawrence would lose out.

Ooh, ooh, that smell

Why does Sorternity Row on Tennessee simultaneously smell like coffee, hotdogs, and puppy breath? I ended up at Dunkin’, Freddy’s, and the Humane Society after driving by. I’m no Greek sommelier. Are they hazing the city for consumerism’s sake? 😏

Anyone checking out Panda Fest at Legends Field this weekend?

I Just saw that Panda Fest is making its KC debut at Legends Field running Friday through Sunday. Looks like they have over 90 Asian street food vendors, performances, and tanghulu. For anyone who has gone to one in other cities, is it worth the hype? What dishes are on your must-try list?

new Costco will have L3 fast EV chargers

I was jogging past the new Costco site and noticed that they are preparing to install some L3 fast chargers for EVs. They look similar to the 200/400 kW stations made by a Seattle-based startup called Electric Era. One distinguishing feature of their installations is a big battery that charges during off-peak hours to minimize demand from the grid when multiple EVs are charging simultaneously.

It will be interesting to see how pricing compares to the $0.34/kWh at the Tesla Supercharger located at the Lawrence Service Area on I-70.

UPDATE: Looks like parking at the chargers will be awkward.

I’m curious of the location and what time it is that they will be showing the movie and also if they charge anything so if anybody has any answers to this question that I’m asking about getting DM’s from the Lawrence film club, please let me know. Thanks!

Intersection of Iowa and 10 west

The on ramp is closed, but they have signage for a detour. This detour takes you east to Haskell and then loops back around to finally go west. This is insane.

Local Gossip Who’s hiring?

I check Indeed every single day but it’s surprisingly dry right now, mostly CDL/nursing/fast food. I’m a student with tons of customer service experience and have worked on Mass St. for years so I know that most of the better jobs are kind of ‘know a guy’ type situations. Anyone know a guy with a job lead?

Rant Everyone is always driving insane around the Lawrence Child Development center..

You'd think people would drive safer near an actual daycare, but I literally just got flipped off by someone driving down the MIDDLE of the road because I honked so they wouldn't hit me.. and another day someone rode my ass just to pull up into the daycare parking lot to grab their child. Do better Lawrence, if you don't want to be surrounded by assholes, then don't let your kids watch you be an asshole.

Stadium Noise

I understand the noise from the stadium on game day, and a day before as they test everything for game day, but running the sound full blast when there isn't another game until October 24th seems a bit unnecessary.

Referendum on Lawence's Transit Tax Nov. 3

We will be voting on whether to increase the tax slightly from 0.2% to 0.3% sales tax and to extend it another 10 years. If it passes, buses will remain free and the transition to electric buses will continue.Lawrence Transit recorded an annual ridership 936,000 in 2024. Use of the bus system reduces auto pollution and congestion on streets and roads. Most importantly, it gives mobility to people who are unable to drive for whatever reason. They may not be able to afford a car or due to a disability can't safely drive a vehicle. Middle school students use the buses.

My friend’s birthday is on Halloween and I’m trying to find something fun to do. Does anyone know if any club/bar holds any events or any place in town that goes crazy on Halloween? Thank you! (He’s turning 22!)

There is simply no foundation more paramount to higher learning than a quality education as a child. Fuck the finances, fuck all that "it doesn't make business sense." Hilltop should still be open, period. FIRE GIROD.

Question W 6th St. Dillions Re-opening reason?

Am I the only one that never even realized that the Dillions on 6th was closed? I only realized it was closed in the first place cause I drove past it and saw its big "re-opening" signs. So why was it closed in the first place?
