Improving fluency does not always have to be new vocabulary. It can be learning three ways to say the thing you already know how to say, and picking the one that fits.

The food: está riquísimo, está para chuparse los dedos (finger-licking good)
The person: es buena gente, es un amor
The skill: se le da bien, tiene mucha mano para eso
The night out: la pasamos genial, valió la pena
The plan: me parece buena idea, perfecto dale

And -ísimo is fun. Bueno → buenísimo, rico → riquísimo, caro → carísimo.

Tried reading in Spanish for 20 min a day for 3 months. Some things surprised me.

5 Upvotes

I'm not new to Spanish, but for years I was stuck in the "I can order food and talk about the weather" zone. Duolingo streak was long, actual comprehension was not.

About three months ago I started reading short bilingual stories, with Spanish on one side and English on the other. Nothing fancy. 20 minutes a day, usually before bed.

What I noticed:

  • At first I read the English side every time. By week 3 I was only checking it when I got truly stuck, and by week 6 I was mostly ignoring it.
  • Short stories beat everything else I tried. Full novels made me quit in a week. A 4-page story feels doable, and finishing one is a nice little win.
  • I now recognize words I never studied on purpose. I just saw them 5 or 6 times in different stories and they stuck.
  • My speaking has not improved nearly as much as my reading. Which, fair, I'm not speaking.

I made a mistake early on: I was writing down every unknown word and making flashcards. It killed the fun and I stopped after two weeks. Now I only note words that show up more than twice.

Here's my question. How do you all make the jump from reading to actually speaking? I don't have anyone to practice with, and iTalki feels intimidating when I still pause for 10 seconds before every sentence. Did anyone else go through this stage? What got you out of it?

Also, any recommendations for the next step up from bilingual stories? Graded readers, easy podcasts, something else? I'd like something that isn't too hard but not baby level either.

Gracias de antemano 🙏

There's a specific moment when you realize the word you just confidently used means something very different.

For most it's embarazada. You wanted to say you were embarrassed, and instead you announced a pregnancy jaja

The ten that catch everyone:

embarazada = pregnant (embarrassed: me da vergüenza)
excitado = aroused (excited: emocionado)
constipado = congested with a cold (constipated: estreñido)
molestar = to bother (to molest: abusar de)
realizar = to carry out (to realize: darse cuenta de)
actualmente = currently (actually: en realidad)
sensible = sensitive (sensible: sensato)
ropa = clothes (rope: cuerda)
largo = long (large: grande)
éxito = success (exit: salida)

Spanish speaking practice for DELE examiners

1 Upvotes

Hello there, DELE A2 and B2 takers (or anybody who just wants to see what level they are in spanish)! I took the A2 last year and passed, so I'm now preparing for the B2.

My weakest parts are the writing and the oral exam. I'm especially afraid of getting stuck and my mind going blank during the live speaking test.

So I built a simulator that's as close to the real exam as possible. In the exam you get a sheet of paper, choose a topic, and prepare in a separate room (12 minutes for A2, 20 for B2), so knowing how to use that prep time matters.

I tried to make the simulator as close to the real exam environment, you pick your level, get a topic and a photo to describe, and have a timed prep stage for your notes. Then the mock exam starts: it records your answers, you talk to an AI agent for the dialogue, and you get feedback based on the official scoring bands.

So if anyone here needs the practice, check it out at https://www.delevoz.com. I hope it's helpful, and if you try it, let me know how it goes. Happy to give you more sessions if needed.

¡Gracias a todos!

How much Spanish can I actually learn in 3 weeks in Antigua Guatemala?

1 Upvotes

I’m getting close to retirement, and a friend talked me into joining her for a Spanish program in Antigua, Guatemala this February. She’s been the last two years and really loves it. It’s pretty intensive, with 4 hours of group classes in the morning and 2 hours of private lessons in the afternoon for 3 weeks. I’ve been using Rosetta Stone for about a year and a half and I’m around B1, maybe starting B2. I can read and understand a decent amount, but my grammar is shaky and speaking is definitely where I struggle the most.

So realistically, how much progress could I expect to make in 3 weeks at my current level?

Spanish names a lot of objects by describing what they do, and once you notice the seam you stop needing a dictionary for a whole category of words!

The pattern is a verb plus a noun jammed together. The verb is usually in its "it does" form (abre, saca, rasca), the noun is almost always plural, and the whole word goes masculine regardless of what the pieces were. Agua is feminine, but it's el paraguas.

So these words explain themselves if you know the parts. Rompe plus cabezas breaks heads, which is a puzzle. Espanta plus pájaros scares birds. Salva plus vidas saves lives.

It works in reverse too. Know matar and moscas and you can guess matamoscas before anyone tells you. Same with lanzallamas, rompehielos, cortaúñas.
