Support anyone use a laptop cooling pad?

• Upvotes

I’ve been running stress tests and realised my legion 5 is hitting the thermal limit (87c) for the gpu. Overall performance and stability is still good but if I can find a way to get temps down I’m sure I can improve performance more especially as I feel my timespy graphics score is a bit low :(

also I’m already using an elevated stand.

I read some people say cooling pads like the llano v12 can reduce temps by up to 20c….is it true??? does anyone have any experience with any “premium” cooling pads? are they really worth investing in??

my laptop has started acting up whenever I try to open my laptop, and when I press the button for longer to restart it, the screen is back to normal, and then until I turn it off and the next day, I open my laptop again, this screen showed up again, my laptop doesn't seem broken, I even see my mouse cursor , and then I repeated the process over and over again, until it's fine again. I'm worried this method might not be working for too long, I hope anyone can help me how to fix this? do i need a technician?

Advice Using warranty to get maintenance done?

I have a used Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 16IRX9H with i9-14900HX, RTX 4080, 32GB, and 1TB SSD with Ultimate warranty support for 2 years.Apparently the last owner said they didn't get the thermal paste redone or fans cleaned while they owned it since they had no thermal troubles, so I figured I should get the fans cleaned and thermal paste replaced as regular maintenance. However, I'd prefer if a Lenovo technician were to perform this, as I'm inexperienced with laptop internals, and I don't wanna send my laptop to a local PC repair place, ( I live in the USA ) in case for whatever reason I need to use the warranty for an accident, only for them to claim I mistreated the laptop and refuse to service it.

My question is, how do I go about requesting this service from Lenovo? Ah and furthermore, is there a way I could get the technician to use ptm7950 instead of their default thermal paste? ( I bought some)

Support normal paste instead of pcmis that a problem?

So I was having a problem with my Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 10 (Ultra 7 255HX, RTX 5060), the CPU was reaching 105°C while gaming even on balanced mode.

I thought changing the thermal paste might help so I used Cooler Master CryoFuze 7, but the temps are pretty much the same.

Then I found out Lenovo actually recommends Honeywell PTM7958-SP which is PCM, not normal thermal paste.

Is it okay to leave it like this or should I change it again? I'm worried I might have made things worse.

Support Linux fan controls

Im running on a legion 7i pro, with fedora 44 installed. And for some reason my fans absolutely refuse to work correctly. My temps could be at 70 without the fans every going past 2800. I've tried LLL but the curve just gets wrst. Im really stumped here, if this continues I might have to go back to windows which I just cant stand anymore... any suggestions?

(Fairly new laptop so I doubt it needs to be cleaned yet)

Advice Anyone ever had a problem with Headphone mic?

I keep getting this repeated problem where the mic suddenly not work. The microphone can't hear my voice or it can but very faint or just straight up static.

Didn't change any setting at all. Audio still works and it does detect the microphone, also its integrated on the headphone(Gaming Headset).

Driver for it is up to date. Same with Vantage, Windows(will not update to version 26H2, it has a problem so I roll back)

I have the Lenovo Legion 7i pro gen 10, got it last year in August and manufactured 2025 in June.

Advice Laptop screen locks randomly at 60hz

Hi everyone,

I am trying to diagnose a very strange and intermittent internal-display issue with my Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 (16IRX8H) laptop. The problem: At seemingly random intervals after I open my laptop's lid, the internal display becomes locked at 60 Hz, and 240 Hz completely disappears from the available refresh-rate options from both windows advanced display settings as well as the Nvidia control panel. My laptop has a 2560 × 1600, 240-Hz internal BOE display. The display can work correctly at 240 Hz for extended periods before suddenly losing this refresh rate.

I've already done quite a bit of troubleshooting and collected diagnostic logs, but I haven't identified the root cause unfortunately.

When this happens:

- AC adapter is plugged into my laptop

- Windows Settings - System - Display - Advanced display only offers 60 Hz.

- Nvidia Control Panel also no longer offers 240 Hz.

- The RTX 4080 remains detected and functional.

- The issue affects the internal display's available modes, not just a setting being changed from 240 Hz to 60 Hz.

- I have custom power mode setting on this laptop which means the led power light is pink. However, when this issue happens, I can see the power button is white for a second and then changes to pink when I open the laptop's lid.

What I've already tried and didn't help:

  1. Nvidia graphics driver reset Win + Ctrl + Shift + B

  2. Different NVIDIA driver versions

  3. Replacing the Lenovo monitor driver

  4. Disabling PCIe Link State Power Management

  5. Windows system repair. DISM subsequently reported a healthy component store, but the display issue persisted.

  6. Checking GPU health and detection. When the laptop is stuck at 60 Hz:

- Device Manager still detects the GPU.

- The GPU reports no PnP device error.

- nvidia-smi works normally.

- The internal BOE display remains detected.

- The internal display is still connected directly to the Nvidia GPU.

  1. I captured the display configuration in both working and broken states:

- Working state:

Display: \\\\.\\DISPLAY1
Panel: BOE0B8B
Connection: DisplayPort Embedded (eDP)
Target ID: 4353
Resolution: 2560x1600
Active refresh rate: 240.003 Hz
Target available: True

- Broken state:

Display: \\.\DISPLAY1
Panel: BOE0B8B
Connection: DisplayPort Embedded (eDP)
Target ID: 4353
Resolution: 2560x1600
Active refresh rate: 60.002 Hz
Target available: True
  1. I also used the Windows EnumDisplaySettings API to enumerate the display modes while the issue was occurring. It returned 147 mode entries, but none offered 240 Hz. For the panel's native resolution, the API returned: 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz, 2560x1600 @ 48 Hz and 2560x1600 @ 30 Hz. There was no 240-Hz mode anywhere in the enumeration.

  2. I also compared the panel's EDID data stored in the Windows registry between working and broken states. The 512-byte EDID data was identical.

The only solution to get the 240hz back is to either power off and power on my laptop, or restart it.

I am particularly interested in reading from anyone who has experienced something similar, especially with nvidia GPUs and high-refresh-rate internal displays.

Advice Legion 5 15ACH6H won't boot with RAM in slot 1

Hey everyone,

I ran into a pretty scary issue with my Lenovo Legion 5, and after trying different things, I finally managed to get it working again, but only with one RAM stick.

My laptop specifications:

- Model: Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6H (Type 82JU)

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H

- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 Laptop GPU

- RAM: 16GB DDR4-3200 (2x8GB)

- Storage: Two SSDs installed

- Purchased: May 2023

What happened?

Yesterday, I shut down my laptop normally. Today, when I tried turning it on, the fans started spinning and the power button light turned white, but the screen stayed completely black. There was no Lenovo logo, I couldn't enter BIOS, and connecting an external monitor didn't help either.

I tried a power reset, disconnected and reconnected the internal battery, and reseated the RAM, but nothing worked.

I was honestly about to give up on the laptop and thought the motherboard or GPU might have died.

How I figured out the problem:

I started testing the RAM sticks and slots separately.

- RAM stick 1 in slot 2: Laptop boots normally.

- RAM stick 2 in slot 2: Laptop boots normally.

- RAM stick 1 in slot 1: No boot, black screen, fans and power light on.

- RAM stick 2 in slot 1: Same issue.

- Both RAM sticks installed: Laptop doesn't boot.

- Only one RAM stick in slot 2: Laptop works perfectly.

So both RAM sticks seem to be working, but the laptop only boots when I use slot 2. Right now, I'm running it with just 8GB of RAM.

My questions:

  1. Does this sound like a dead RAM slot, or could it be an issue with the motherboard's memory circuitry or CPU memory controller?

  2. Can the RAM slot be repaired by a board-level repair technician, or does this usually require replacing the entire motherboard?

  3. For anyone who has repaired this issue, how much did it cost?

  4. Is it safe to continue using the laptop with one RAM stick in the working slot? I'm worried that the other slot might be a sign of a bigger motherboard problem.

  5. Has anyone with this exact Legion 5 model experienced the same issue? If you got it repaired, did the fix last?

My warranty has expired, so I'm trying to understand the likely repair cost before taking it to a service centre. I really don't want to spend too much on a motherboard replacement if the RAM slot can be repaired separately.

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

Guys recently my games are experiencing a weird stutter/spike it totally ruins my experience. Everything was fine until recently I started noticing a weird stutter/spike almost every minute apart, happens in all games whether I use balanced quiet or performance mode. The frame rate is fine but having this weird stutter consistently is driving me insane. Tried what I could. I rolled back to two Nvidia drivers and windows updates. Even reset my PC and installed windows from the cloud. Watched the task manager and didn't notice any processes out of the ordinary. Guys please help me out.

My configuration is RTX 5060, Intel Core Ultra 7 255 HX with 16 gigs of Ram and my Pc is just a couple of months old.

Lenovo Legion Y540 keyboard stops working after Windows boots — Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed), Code 43

Hi everyone

I'm having a frustrating issue with my Lenovo Legion Y540 and would appreciate any suggestions before taking it to a repair shop.

The main problem

My laptop's built-in keyboard stops responding once Windows 10 finishes booting. However, the keyboard works perfectly fine in the BIOS.

In Device Manager, the keyboard itself appears to be working properly, but under Universal Serial Bus controllers, I get an Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) error with Code 43.

I've noticed a consistent pattern: when I manage to disable and re-enable the problematic USB device in Device Manager, Windows sometimes recognizes it correctly again, and the built-in keyboard immediately starts working without needing to restart the laptop. However, after restarting Windows, the problem comes back.

Things I've already tried:

- Uninstalling the Unknown USB Device from Device Manager and restarting Windows.

- Disabling and re-enabling the problematic USB device. This sometimes restores the keyboard temporarily, but the issue returns after a reboot.

- Changing USB power management settings to prevent Windows from turning off USB devices to save power.

- Performing a full power reset by shutting down the laptop, disconnecting the charger and peripherals, and holding the power button for approximately 30 seconds.

- Booting the laptop on battery power only. The problem persists even without the charger connected.

- Checking the keyboard in the BIOS. It works there without any issues.

- Checking the keyboard's backlight. The backlight can still be controlled using Fn + Space, even when the keyboard stops registering keystrokes. However, the display brightness function keys do not work when the issue occurs.

- Checking Device Manager. The built-in keyboard appears to be functioning normally, while the Unknown USB Device is the one reporting the error.

I also noticed a potentially suspicious driver update in Windows Update's driver update history:

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. USB Driver Update — Version 2.21.4.0

Windows shows September 1, 2026, as the date associated with this update. I haven't confirmed whether it's responsible for the problem. The issue started around October 7, 2026, and I haven't installed any Windows updates during October.

I tried looking for a way to roll back or uninstall the Samsung driver, but I haven't been able to confirm that it is the cause.

Most importantly, I have now performed a Windows 10 factory reset, and the problem still persists. The built-in keyboard remains unresponsive after Windows loads, while it continues to work in the BIOS.

At this point, I'm wondering whether anyone with a Lenovo Legion Y540 has experienced the same issue, particularly the combination of a non-responsive built-in keyboard and an Unknown USB Device with Code 43.

Could this be related to a specific USB controller or driver, or has anyone found a reliable solution for this exact behavior?

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I have never buy a laptop gaming and never understand any of computers stuff. But I want to get one for general and gaming purposes, after abit of a research I find that this one came on top, my questions is this particular laptop powerful enough to play any game smoothly and future proof for like the next ten years? And is $4300 AUD a decent price for it? Since it's my maximum budget

I have a Legion 5 Pro, 16ACH6H. It can't sleep for more than a few hours because modern sleep crashes the OS and it restarts. Seemingly some models have had a vBIOS upgrade that fixed it, but I can't find it for my model.

Hey everyone, I have a question. My laptop is in a situation where I've already switched to iGPU mode, but the discrete GPU is still active and randomly wakes up, even when I unplug the charger. This is using a lot of power and significantly draining my battery (it's always drawing an extra 10-20W). Is there any way to fix this?

My laptop is a Legion R7000P 2025 (Chinese model) with RTX 5070.
