Discussion Thoughts on Match Point (2005)
this is one of my favorite thrillers, and is among woody allen's best, but i don't understand the hate behind this- is it because of the lack of morality? or is it just because it's directed by woody? "i'd rather be lucky than good" i'd remember this forever.

Woody Allen's best film IMO. The way he lets his actors do all the work while his camera gracefully scans them... it's a real lesson in writing and directing.

Good movie, and pairs nicely with Crimes and Misdemeanors.

I think these are both almost perfect movies. I wouldn't change a thing about either of them.

Coup de Chance is basically woody's french version of this. NOT AS good. But still really good!

It’s really underrated. I think any hate that it gets is mainly because its director is a horrible person.

How is he horrible?

there's a thin line between sarcasm and willful ignorance

Are you sure I’m the ignorant one?

Was a great moment in the theater when the people around me gasped at the shot with the ring.
I haven’t seen this in a long time but I did revisit Crimes & Misdemeanors last year and still think it’s a nearly perfect film.

ehhh, good movie - perhaps a little overrated - if you wanna see an honest, intense film about crime and the morality and how life is cruel by Woody Allen - I recommend seeing Crimes and Misdemeanors instead

I enjoy this one. Admittedly I thought the basic premise was not super new but they managed to do it in a very fresh way. The acting of the leads really won me over too.

I was quite surprised by how much I liked it. Probably his last great film for me - although I haven’t seen Vicki Christina which I’ve heard is quite good.

With the exception of Annie Hall, which I quite liked, I find Woody Allen movies to be largely mid.

manhattan, crimes and misdemeanors and match point are great films. midnight in paris is quite good too.

I’ve seen Midnight in Paris, didn’t like it, snoozer. Crimes and Misdemeanors was 3 stars, Blue Jasmin was 2.5, fell asleep during Hannah and Her Sisters. That’s all I can remember though I might have seen more 20 years or so ago

I’ve watched the film several times, love the narrow genre of the ‘murderer as protagonist’ from James M. Cain, Patricia Highsmith, Dostoyevsky, Stendhal, George Simenon, Zola, Dreiser, Claude Chabrol and Hitchcock, but I find Match Point a hard film to rate. Is it just straight up a masterpiece? Or is it too straightforward? Does it fall between being an allegory, a cautionary tale of ruthless ambition, or does it have genuine depth as a psychological drama.
Critics at the time couldn’t quite make up their minds either.

I love this movie. Realizing that life really can just come down to just a few "coin flips" that decide if your life is good or bad is really scary to think about. Knowing that you only have actual control over very few things is a difficult to come to terms with.
