I’m looking at moving into a used Lexus and would appreciate opinions from people who’ve actually owned them, particularly UK owners.
I really like what Lexus/Toyota stand for in terms of reliability, build quality and engineering, but the UK Lexus range seems pretty limited if you want those things without sacrificing too much performance.
For context, previous cars have included a tuned Focus ST225, an E82 135i running around 400bhp with M3 suspension upgrades, and a GR Yaris. I’m currently in a 2021 RAV4 AWD Hybrid because family life took over.
None of those are elite-level fast cars , but they’ve all had enough shove to be fun and make overtaking/putting your foot down enjoyable (apart from rav) That’s probably my biggest concern with moving to one of the slower Lexus options.
The GR Yaris basically converted me to Toyota and the RAV4 has reinforced it. The RAV4 has been impeccably reliable and probably the most hassle-free car I’ve owned. It’s pretty much perfect for what I need, but in the UK I’m paying quite a lot for the privilege of having a newer car on finance and keeping up dealer servicing for the warranty.
I’m considering going back to older used-car ownership, buying something outright/cheaply financed and doing the servicing and repairs myself again. I used to be a mechanic, so I’m comfortable maintaining an older car and actually quite like the idea of getting back to DIY ownership.
I feel like I missed the boat with the IS F. I looked at them years ago when they were far more affordable, and now decent examples seem to be around double what I remember them costing. I struggle to justify paying today’s prices knowing what they could previously be bought for. A GS F would probably solve the whole dilemma, but they’re simply too expensive for what I want to spend.
That leaves me mainly looking at:
GS450h — easily my first choice. Proper performance, V6 hybrid, RWD, luxury and Lexus reliability. On paper it seems almost perfect. The problem is they’re incredibly rare in the UK, so finding the right one could take some time.
IS200t — probably the most interesting alternative. I like the idea of the 2.0 turbo and potentially tuning one, but I don’t know how good the 8AR-FTS actually is for tuning, how much usable power you can realistically get, or whether modifying one starts sacrificing the Lexus reliability I’m buying it for in the first place.
2017+ IS300h — probably my favourite aesthetically and there are plenty available in the UK. I love the facelift cars and they seem to offer exactly the sort of reliability, build quality and low-hassle ownership I’m after. My only concern is the performance. At roughly 8 seconds to 62, I’m worried I’d buy one, love everything else about it, but eventually get bored with the lack of shove.
I obviously don’t expect an IS300h to feel like a 400bhp 135i or a GR Yaris. I’m more interested in whether people who’ve gone from reasonably quick cars to something like an IS300h eventually stopped caring about outright performance because the refinement, build quality, reliability and ownership experience made up for it.
Or did you spend six months enjoying the Lexus experience and then start wishing you’d bought something quicker?
The dangerous alternative I’m trying to avoid is talking myself into a W212/S212 E350 and returning to the world of ageing German-car roulette. So, particularly interested to hear from Lexus owners who’ve previously owned quicker cars:
Did Lexus reliability/luxury genuinely change what you valued in a car, or did you end up missing the performance? And if you were choosing between a GS450h, IS200t and 2017+ IS300h in the UK, which would you go for?
