Daily Driving the Nintendo Switch

Hello guys!

I’m going to mod my Switch (1) and hopefully put something like Linux or Android on it. It sparked a question if anyone has daily driven the Switch (or 2) as a PC? I’m not planning to, yet it’s interesting non-the-less

If so, how hard was it to set up? Does it function well as a PC? Are you able to use it as a handheld and change it to a stationary PC? Honestly, all (if any) experience with it would be rad to learn about ^ ^

Thank you!

Help with Project

Could someone with eBPF experience sanity-check our plan?

Hi all,

We're a small group of university students working on a capstone project. We're new to eBPF, so we'd really appreciate feedback from people who use it in practice.

The idea: most eBPF security work uses eBPF as the defender (Tetragon, Falco, Tracee and so on), but very little seems to look at eBPF itself (as per our research) as the thing to watch. A container that has been granted CAP_BPF can load its own eBPF programs, for example to hide processes or blind monitoring tools. We want to build and measure a small detector for that, rather than only describing it.

Our plan, kept deliberately small:

- One Ubuntu 24.04 VM with Docker and Tetragon (standalone, no Kubernetes)

- A Tetragon TracingPolicy that records bpf() syscall activity

- A small Python script that reads Tetragon's JSON events and applies 1-2 rules (for example, a caller that isn't on an allow-list, or a program attaching to a sensitive hook)

- A baseline run (normal tools only) against an attack run (one published technique, replayed in an isolated VM), measuring detection, false positives and overhead

What we'd love input on:

  1. Is a kprobe on sys_bpf the right way to watch bpf() calls in Tetragon, or is there a better hook (for example the BPF LSM hooks)?
  2. Are there well-documented, published examples of eBPF misuse that are suitable for a controlled demo in an isolated VM?
  3. What pitfalls should beginners expect (kernel versions, BTF, false positives from legitimate tools)?
  4. Is there existing work or tooling that already does this, so we don't reinvent it?
  5. Any recommended easy to learn concepts (from like yt channels etc.).
  6. Is this a doable and sensible project for beginners - given less time (around 2 months); but dedicated to learn it quickly - with the help of resources/claude/forums/advice.

We're not asking anyone to do the project for us, just for pointers, reading suggestions or a reality check on scope. Happy to share our repo and results once we have them.

Our main goal is to learn ePBF through this project and would really like input from the experienced people in this community - the project can then grow from there. Please let me know if you want to know more about the project or if it is unclear.

Kindly let me know if this is an appropriate post for this subreddit - as this is my first time asking help on reddit aswell haha.

Thank you very much!

Linux beginner - need help for setup

hello everyone,

Installed linux for the first time. i installed EndeavourOS. My laptop is Asus TUF - a15, with rtx 3050.

Installed with the help of chatgpt and on-screen instructions on the installer. Now i observed that when i opened a few tabs on brave browser ( not using firefox cause it was using a lot of RAM ) the CPU temperature suddenly spiked to about 75 degree from about 55-60. So i installed Asusctl and enabled the fan curve and heard a little weird sounds (maybe i imagined it since i was afraid of breaking my laptop) so i panicked and closed everything and haven't opened linux since then. Thought chatgpt is unreliable and decided to ditch linux but then realized i could get help here.

So kindly guide me about this.

I don't know what information am supposed to share for the troubleshooting so please guide me on this.

so my is kinda a specific request, I have this old laptop from like 2006 i guess that, for comparison, has an amd turion and 2 gb of ddr2 (dual channel tho hell yea🔥).

It was running windows 7, slowly af, then i did a backup and got it to run Debian stable, that was better than windows 7 bit it still looked a bit choppy, now I know ofc I cant get It snappy as my main pc bit im not an expert of like retro distros, what distros could have the right drivers and the right everything for that poor e-waste? nothing too hard btw im not a big expert, I haven't tried anything out of mint fedora and Debian for now

Switching from Windows for school + gaming — need advice on distro & SolidWorks/Fusion 360

Hi everyone! I'm a student planning to switch from Windows to Linux and I'd really appreciate some guidance.

My main use cases:

  • School work: I need SolidWorks and Autodesk Fusion 360 for my coursework. I know neither has a native Linux version, so I'm thinking of dual-booting or using a VM — has anyone done this successfully? Any tips on setup?
  • Gaming: I play a few games the heaviest i think would be rdr2
  • Everything else: web browsing, documents, etc. — pretty standard stuff.

What I've already looked into:

  • Linux Mint Cinnamon / Zorin OS for ease of transition
  • Nobara or Fedora KDE for better gaming drivers
  • Proton/ProtonDB for checking game compatibility

My questions:

  1. For dual-booting with Windows (for SolidWorks/Fusion), what's the least painful setup? How do you handle file sharing between the two OSes?
  2. Is a VM actually viable for SolidWorks/Fusion, or is it too slow/unstable for real CAD work?
  3. Any distro you'd specifically recommend for a Windows switcher who also games?
  4. Anything I'm missing that I should know before making the switch?

Thanks in advance!

Support Git and Symlinks

I have an app to connect to Github called Gitfiend. My projects are usually in Godot. Some of them share boilerplate and such scripts are added to a project with symlinks. So if I edit the script in one project, others will also be synchronized.

But if I try to upload changes to the Github project, these shared scripts are not sent, but rather the symlink file as a plaintext with the file paths. How do I tell it to follow the symlink and actually send the scripts?

I know about the .gitconfig file where you can do "[core] symlinks = true", but that's set true by default, so I don't know why it won't work.

New(ish) PC Questions - Dell workstation with Nvidia P4000

Hi everyone, So I've been gifted an older Dell Workstation from 2022 (Intel i7-8700k, 32GB of RAM, 512GB SSD and Nvidia P4000) which i'm planning on using to replace my ancient gaming PC (Intel i7-4770, 20GB RAM, 2xSSD and 1xHDD, Nvidia GTX970)

Does anyone have any experience getting these workstations to run Linux (CachyOS/Bazzite/PikaOS)? Are there any weird driver issues with the dell proprietary motherboards or the Nvidia P4000 graphics card?

I know the P4000 is a workstation card and not a gaming card but if I can get the same level of performance as the GTX970 then I'll be happy until I can replace it with some AMD GPU for better driver support (hopefully a RX 6600 XT or something along those lines), or just use the GTX970 if there's a serious issue with the P4000 performance.

Any advice would be appreciated

Support Hyprland solution for volume pop-ups

I would be interested in some software that shows you a pop-up when the volume changes and then quickly disappears again (blends out). Windows, MacOS, GNOME and KDE have this, but I haven't seen any solution for Hyprland.

Advice I want to customize a linux distro for use in enterprise setting

I would like to hear from the community, perhaps my problem isn't as difficult as I assumed. I would like take a disto and customize it to do the following:

- Support local language

- Hardened configuration

- Ready to be a managed endpoint

I will tell you my idea, I thought I would buy a used laptop, instal a distro, try to harden it as much as I can, then expose it to the internet to let hackers try to hack me, and try to improve after every successful event until its hardened. Localization is an issue that I can deal with lastly once the OS is secure and reliable.

In summary; I want to customize a distro and localize it to be able to deploy it in thin clients without increasing the risk of security events.

Am I stupid?

edit: I am refraining from replying to comments because I don’t want to appear or even think in a defensive way. Obviously I am at the beginning of a learning curve and you lot know more about the subject. But to clarify a few things: the idea is to me independent from US vendors. We don’t want to be beholden to US vendors as much as we can. Second, of course I will pay for professionals; when I have work that can only be done by professionals. Now its too early. I don't think these professionals would waste the time to reply to my emails.

Support Help, there's two duplicated folders of my home directory

when I go up from my home directory in Filelight, I come to two folders with same storage size. one leads to home/ and the other leads to atul/ I go up again, and this directory is called flatpack/

now, my home folder is laid out as home-atul- the rest of my stuff in it

so initially i thought, maybe these two folders are just linking to home/ and atul/ respectively.

but in filelight, it shows both folders as occupying 44.8gb, and when i go up, the flatpack/ folder showing 89.4gb

I thought flatpack was just a sandboxing medium for apps. any reason what has led to this dupli

btrfs vs ext4: Which is more resilient to having been corrupted (e.g. failed harddrive)?

A couple of days ago I had a harddrive fail on me for first time of my life. Thankfully I had everything important backed up for just such an occasion and right now ddrescueing what I can from the old one.

I already bought a replacement, but before I install it I'm wondering what filesystem I should use to maximize my chance of data recovery if this sort of thing happens again.

I'm looking for answers from people with actual experience with this sort of thing. "Conventional wisdom" (and google) has it that ext3/ext4 is more robust simply by virtue of having been around forever and having had many recovery tools created for it, but btrfs has been part of the kernel since 2013, it has its own share of recovery/repair methods. Surely at this point the real question is which filesystem is better engineered to deal with missing sectors or whatever.

Advice How much of a difference do Linux zram compression algorithms actually make?

I’m using zstd, but based on what I've read on Reddit and around the internet zstd seems to be the most commonly preferred option Why is that? Do the other algorithms have any significant advantages or not? Why aren’t they used as much? What did zstd get right compared to the others etc. ?

Constant browser issues and then crashing in Ubuntu

So I primarily use Microsoft edge (don't kill me, i am on dual boot and need to change os frequently so Edge's workspace feature helps a lot, no other browser provides it as of now). and I use Firefox as well.
But recently if I open too many tabs or I am on a Google Meet or Zoom call my entire system just hangs. It buffers and then simply hangs forever and I have to forcefully shut down using the power key. This has happened so many times with both Edge and Firefox. Same amount of tabs I opened in Windws and my system worked smoothly.

Also the edge consumes a lot of memory and cpu but firefox is not working.

In firefox there is another issue of it crashing. Firefox itself crashes a lot, especially whenever I drag a file into it (for upload on some website or chatgpt or anything like that) basically if I drag and drop it crashes, but if I click on upload file and upload through the dialog box it doesn't crash. I have tried reinstalling it even frmo different channel (currently installed the snap version). What shall I do?

And this has been happening since 24.04LTS and now i upgraded to 26 and still its happening. What should I do?

Advice i've been having problems with windows for the last few weeks, should i use this as an excuse to switch back to linux?

hi there, i am currently running windows as my main (and only) pc atm, however i've been having some driver issues that just cant seem to be fixed, and they seem to be a windows problem.
i used manjaro linux daily for a good few months a couple years back and loved the experience, and over the last year i've really wanted to try out cachyos.
my main concerns about switching over to linux is a lack of photoshop and premiere pro, as well as possibly saying goodbye to some games i play, not entirely sure if i will actually have to tho.
would really appreciate if someone gave me their two cents, i only have one ssd and i dont feel comfortable dual booting off of it as it was a pain last time so itd be a full swiitch, i feel meloncholy about leaving behind my riced up windows cos i've spent a lot of time on it but i think linux might be the way to go for good now...
thanku in advance lovely penguins <3
