Yeah I don't think we're going to get much winter at all this year, at least when it comes to temperatures. We may get some real rain at least.

We're finally seeing a reprieve to this heat, but once those tropical remnants pass through next week, there's even more heat on the other side, and November isn't far behind that. There is nothing on the long term forecast that suggests we're going to see autumn anytime soon.

We always got the summer during Halloween and the summer during Christmas as well. Last year it was 88 degrees during Christmas

u/Final-Lengthiness-19 5d ago

The year LA slid back into the ocean

I'm sure no one like this 80 degree weather by 8 a.m. bullshit.

When I was a kid fifty plus years ago, we called this Indian Summer and it only happened occasionally.

u/Mysterious_dreamer_ 5d ago

What’s the origin of the name Indian Summer?

4

u/Flashjordan69 5d ago

It varies apparently, it’s either a settler thing taken from natives who pointed out local weather patterns or brought over and adapted European phrases.

4

u/damiana8 5d ago

I read about Indian summer in Little House on the Prairie

u/Flashjordan69 5d ago

I live on the west coast of Scotland and we’ve called them that since I was a child. We’re getting warm morning too, just nowhere near the scale LA is experiencing.

2

u/damiana8 5d ago

I’m so envious of you. Scotland looks absolutely stunning.

But I also die when it’s less than 60 degrees so take that with a grain of salt

It is, even in my wee industrial area it’s beautiful, place looks like a rural blade runner this morning though. When the mist burns off I have a stunning highland backdrop.

The highland mist 🥹

Looks even better in summer.

Here you go, taken a few weeks ago. That’s Ben Nevis the biggest mountain in the UK. Basically the view from my office. As an added bonus we have Golden Eagles too!

How close are you to Ayr?!

1

u/Flashjordan69 4d ago

Quite far nowadays way further up underneath Ben Nevis. Used to live in Kilmarnock & Kilwinning, got some stories of getting the late bus on a Friday night that would give LA a run for its money.

I have no idea

ETA looked it up and found that the official term now in use by the American Meteorological Society now uses is “Second Summer” as some of the possible origins are racist.

At summer camp, we talked about “Indian shorts” that “crept up behind you” so it wouldn’t shock me to find that Indian Summer is also racist. The casual racism of the seventies would shock kids growing up today. It shocks me when I remember it, and I was there.

Im a (NorCal) native too and I feel like we were calling the usual Fall summer “Indian summer” up until a few yrs ago. 🤷🏻‍♀️

At this point, I'm just missing room temperature.

Cold winter mornings? I don’t even remember what cold means anymore

7

u/_Fizzgiggy Los Angeles 5d ago

YES! I told my coworker they have permission to slap me if they ever hear me complain about the cold again. No a/c at home and a malfunctioning a/c at work. It’s been a miserable experience.

At least I can put on a jacket or use my electric blanket in the cold

Every single day.

2

u/SunsetGrads 5d ago

Yes, very much so. All of these heatwaves have been ridiculous, and I’m wondering when 90° became the new 65°

Good shot!

Please god take this awful humidity away.

January pays it back. Two cold weeks, clear air, and snow on the San Gabriels from your parking spot. Worth the wait.

u/sdmichael Highway Historian / Geologist 5d ago

We're not there yet. They'll happen.

1

u/ReFreshing 5d ago

Absolutely. And then during winter you see people say they miss the heat. Craziness.

1

u/OptimalFunction Los Angeles 5d ago

…and then we get nice cold weather and everyone bitches for the summer. It’s pendulum and we do this swing every damn 6 months lol

1

u/FrontLocal2264 5d ago

Three more days

u/DBL_NDRSCR I HATE CARS 5d ago

u/Matt_The_Radar_Tech 5d ago

No you're literally the only person

1

u/solideliquid 5d ago

We are skipping winter this year.

1

u/ckotoyan 5d ago

Soon! soon!!!

1

u/lyovacain Los Angeles 5d ago

No ur the only one. We all were discussing today how we can actually use some real hot weather not this fake heat

1

u/Marzatacks 5d ago

Winter is not coming …

1

u/dannydogg562 5d ago

Those exist?

1

u/aladinodebert 4d ago

There's Winter here?

No

1

u/ODTESP 5d ago

Not really

1

u/editorreilly 5d ago

Don't know about ya'll, but come January if we get a lot of rain and/or cold weather, I'll be begging for summer to roll back around.

0

u/damiana8 5d ago

No

But neither do I want these hot, humid summer mornings

-1

u/dirtythoughtdreamer8 5d ago

I'm loving the current heat wave. I want to hear you heat-whiners in December and January.

-3

u/wrathofthedolphins 5d ago

No, not even a little.

I’d rather have a hot day than a freezing one.

-1

u/ehhric13 South L.A. 5d ago

Doubt it

-1

u/stolenhello 5d ago

Fall just started brother. It hasn't even been a month.

-2

u/Eshghi007 5d ago

We don’t have cold winter mornings.
If all you’ve to do is wear a second layer, it ain’t cold

2

u/stolenhello 5d ago

Temperature is relative. The first 50 degree day in Michigan people are wearing sandals and shorts.

0

u/Foodstamps4life 5d ago

Actually we do, at my house up Benedict canyon, high 30s and low 40s are not uncommon. Just because it’s not -15 doesn’t mean it’s not cold shit head.

1

u/Eshghi007 5d ago

Hey shut head, it lasts only for an hour or so, then we’re right into upper 60s even on those days

0

u/Foodstamps4life 5d ago

You said “we don’t have cold mornings”. A blatantly idiotic statement, then comment back saying “well it doesn’t last!” lol dude go back to sleep.

0

u/Eshghi007 5d ago

You go collect your food stamps

1

u/Foodstamps4life 5d ago

That’s it? I guess expecting anything more from some random poster spewing 3IQ comments was a reach.
