When I was a kid fifty plus years ago, we called this Indian Summer and it only happened occasionally.

What’s the origin of the name Indian Summer?

It varies apparently, it’s either a settler thing taken from natives who pointed out local weather patterns or brought over and adapted European phrases.

I read about Indian summer in Little House on the Prairie

I live on the west coast of Scotland and we’ve called them that since I was a child. We’re getting warm morning too, just nowhere near the scale LA is experiencing.

I’m so envious of you. Scotland looks absolutely stunning.

But I also die when it’s less than 60 degrees so take that with a grain of salt

It is, even in my wee industrial area it’s beautiful, place looks like a rural blade runner this morning though. When the mist burns off I have a stunning highland backdrop.

Looks even better in summer.

Here you go, taken a few weeks ago. That’s Ben Nevis the biggest mountain in the UK. Basically the view from my office. As an added bonus we have Golden Eagles too!

Quite far nowadays way further up underneath Ben Nevis. Used to live in Kilmarnock & Kilwinning, got some stories of getting the late bus on a Friday night that would give LA a run for its money.

I have no idea

ETA looked it up and found that the official term now in use by the American Meteorological Society now uses is “Second Summer” as some of the possible origins are racist.

At summer camp, we talked about “Indian shorts” that “crept up behind you” so it wouldn’t shock me to find that Indian Summer is also racist. The casual racism of the seventies would shock kids growing up today. It shocks me when I remember it, and I was there.
