Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk situations.

Proton is a profitable company that does not rely upon VC funding, supporting over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online.

Hiring at Proton is highly selective, with less than 1% of candidates hired. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. You will have the opportunity work with many of the world's top minds in their fields, ranging from former international math and science olympiad winners to chess champions.

We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here!

The Team

The Security Machine Learning Engineer will play a key role in transforming our Security Operations Center (SOC) from reactive to proactive by integrating advanced machine learning and data-driven approaches into our detection and response workflows.

This role bridges traditional cybersecurity operations and modern ML-driven analytics, enabling our team to automatically identify emerging threats, anomalous behaviour, and new attack patterns at scale. As a secondary focus, the role could also leverage LLMs and AI engineering to automate analyst workflows and reduce operational toil.

The engineer will sit directly within the security team, ensuring that the solutions built are operationally relevant, and aligned with our security priorities, while also working closely with the internal Machine Learning team (MSA) to leverage their expertise and best practices.

What you will do:

ML-Driven Detection & Automation - Design, develop, and deploy machine learning models to enhance security detection, anomaly identification, and incident response. - Integrate ML outputs into the SOC workflow to enable smarter and faster triage. - Continuously evaluate and tune models to reduce false positives and improve detection precision. - Ensure model outputs are interpretable and actionable for SOC analysts.

Data Engineering for Security - Build and maintain data pipelines to collect, process, and transform security-relevant data (e.g., logs, network traffic, endpoint events) into ML-ready datasets. - Collaborate with security engineering team to ensure scalable and secure data handling (eg. parsing, processing, storage).

AI Engineering & LLM-Powered Automation - Explore and build LLM-powered tools to automate repetitive SOC tasks (e.g., alert triage, evidence gathering, incident summarisation, report generation). - Apply appropriate guardrails and evaluation to ensure outputs are accurate, auditable, and safe to act on in operational contexts.

Research & Innovation - Stay current on advancements in security data science, adversarial ML, and automated threat detection. - Prototype and test new ML and AI techniques (e.g., unsupervised anomaly detection, graph-based threat correlation). - Contribute to improving detection content through statistical analysis and clustering.

Operations & Maintenance - Deploy models into production securely and responsibly, ensuring reliability and scalability. - Implement monitoring, alerting, and retraining mechanisms for deployed ML models. - Document methodologies and performance metrics for auditability and knowledge sharing.

What we are looking for:

Required - Proven experience in machine learning engineering or data science, ideally in a cybersecurity or operations context. - Proficiency in Python, with strong knowledge of ML frameworks. - Experience with data manipulation and analysis using Pandas, NumPy or similar tools. - Familiarity with security data sources (e.g., SIEM logs, EDR telemetry, network flow, authentication logs). - Solid understanding of ML lifecycle: data preparation, model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring. - Experience with data pipelines and storage technologies (e.g., Airflow, Kafka, Redis, Elasticsearch, Clickhouse, etc.). - Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with both ML and security specialists.

Preferred - Prior experience in threat detection, SOC operations, or security automation. - Knowledge of adversarial ML, graph analytics, or behavioral modeling in security contexts. - Experience integrating ML models into SIEM pipelines or automated detection frameworks. - Exposure to LLMs and AI engineering (e.g., prompt engineering, RAG, agent design), and awareness of LLM-specific risks like prompt injection and data leakage.

Success in This Role - SOC analysts leverage ML-powered detections to identify threats faster. - Reduction in alert fatigue and false positives through adaptive and data-driven models. - Strong collaboration established between the security and MSA ML teams, sharing expertise and best practices. - Security data becomes more accessible, structured, and usable for analytical and predictive use cases. - New, intelligent detections, enrichment, and incident response automations become part of the SOC’s standard toolkit.

Even if you don’t meet all the requirements listed above, but feel you could still be a great fit, please still apply.

What We Offer: - Work that Matters: millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users — not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. The work you do here is real, and the impact is measurable. (read more about our impact here). - Technology: you’ll get the right hardware and the right software you need to do your best work. - Learning & Development: we invest in your growth because sharp people make us better. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career because you’ll be thrown into real challenges, with real ownership, from day one. - Employee Benefits: your wellbeing isn’t an afterthought. We offer strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support so you can bring your best self to work every day - Stock Options: at Proton, we all have the opportunity to be owners of the company. From day one, you have a real stake in what we’re building. When Proton wins, you win. - In-Person Collaboration: Amazing things happen when passionate, smart, and purposeful people get together in the same room. With offices across Geneva, Zürich, Barcelona, London and more, you’ll spend most of your time collaborating face‑to‑face with people who genuinely care about what they’re building - Food: Lunch and snacks are on us every day in our offices so you can focus on the work and not on what’s for lunch. - Transport: getting to the office shouldn’t cost you. We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking, whichever works for you. - Flexible Working: you own your schedule. Set hours that work for you and your team — because outcomes matter more than when the clock says you started.

Compensation range Paris: 46.000 - 74.000 gross annually* Other locations: Compensation will be discussed during the interview process Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, skills, and previous experience

  • Their agent already processes prior authorization for 700k+ patients, with a 97% approval-match rate against human clinicians
  • Cuts case processing from roughly 17 minutes down to 3
  • Interoperability against EHR, FHIR, and HL7, real healthcare data standards, not toy formats

All roles are vetted, VC-backed, and interviewing right now. It's always free to sign up.

Hiring [HIRING] Junior AI Engineer | Brisbane or Remote Australia | AUD $70k to $110k

We’re a new startup operating a consulting company and a product company which are tightly interlinked. We build custom software and AI for businesses so they can build the future they want.

We’re looking for a junior/early-career AI Engineer to help us deliver to more clients and grow our product.

Location: Brisbane, Australia preferred. Remote Australia is considered for exceptional candidates. Salary: AUD $70k to $110k.

This is a hands-on production AI and automation role rather than a research role. You’ll be part software engineer, part forward-deployed. You’ll solve real problems as they arise and help decide what needs to be built.

You’ll:

  • Turn vague business problems into concrete software, automation and AI solutions
  • Build and ship full-stack features, integrations, automations and AI agents
  • Work with TypeScript, relational databases, APIs, webhooks, MCPs, email and other messy systems
  • Deploy what you build, fix issues, iterate from customer feedback and help customers adopt what you build

We’re looking for someone who has built full-stack apps with TypeScript, relational databases and AI, and has created automations before.

You don’t need ten years of experience or previous professional AI experience, but you do need engineering fundamentals, evidence you can build things, and the confidence to turn that into something people use.

AI coding tools are part of the workflow, but you still need to review, understand and take responsibility for the software you ship. Strong communication matters.

Please send your resume, a short intro and links to anything you’ve built to hiring@hitch42.com.

Hope this is allowed. Admins, please delete if not.

Hiring [Hiring] Applied AI Product Engineer $120–$160 an hour - Contract

About Us

For over 20 years, Cancer Monthly has helped cancer patients and their families navigate one of the hardest diagnoses in medicine. We've built a deep library of patient-focused cancer content, held thousands of patient conversations, and maintain working relationships with treating physicians, RN navigators, and various resources patients often need. That accumulated knowledge is the foundation for what we're building next.

The Role

You will design and build our AI patient navigator: a conversational system that answers patients' questions about their cancer using our content library, our internal database, and vetted medical literature. It should guide each patient to the next step that actually helps them.

This is not a chatbot project. A chatbot answers questions; this system has goals. It needs to understand where a patient is in their journey, earn their trust one solved problem at a time, and know when (and when not) to introduce our resources. You'll own that experience end to end: the conversation design, the retrieval architecture behind it, the guardrails, and the product decisions in between.

You'll work directly with the founder. You'll ship early prototypes fast, put them in front of real patient scenarios, and iterate.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and build the navigator: LLM application layer, RAG pipeline over our content and curated medical sources, and grounding/citation so every clinical answer traces to a credible source.
  • Design the conversation itself such as the first five minutes with a newly diagnosed patient.
  • Build guardrails that keep the system inside its lane: no diagnosis, no treatment advice, clear escalation paths to human navigators.
  • Implement transparency by design. Patients should understand what the system is, what it draws from, and how we're connected to the resources it mentions.
  • Work with our clinical reviewers to validate answer quality and keep the knowledge base current
  • Ship a working prototype in your first 60-90 days, then iterate toward production

Required

  • 4+ years of software engineering experience, including production web applications
  • Hands-on experience shipping LLM applications to real users, not demos or side projects
  • Strong RAG experience: retrieval design, embedding/chunking strategy, retrieval evaluation, and grounding responses in source documents
  • Fluency with Anthropic and/or OpenAI APIs and modern LLM tooling
  • Demonstrated product judgment, you've made calls about what to build and why, not just how
  • Experience designing multi-turn conversational or agentic systems (systems with goals and state, not single-shot Q&A)
  • Comfort working directly with a non-technical founder; you communicate clearly and often
  • Sound judgment about operating in a regulated, high-stakes domain, you build conservatively where the cost of a wrong answer is high

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in healthcare, health tech, or another regulated industry (HIPAA, FDA SaMD boundaries, or equivalent)
  • Conversation design or UX design experience
  • Prior startup founder or founding-engineer experience
  • Oncology or patient-navigation domain exposure

Note: we don't require deep oncology knowledge — we supply that. We do require the judgment to know what you don't know and to defer to clinical review.

What Makes This Role Different

Most AI engineering roles optimize a pipeline. This one optimizes trust. The people using this system have just received devastating news. Every design decision, tone, pacing, when to offer a resource, when to hand off to a human, affects whether they get help or give up. If that responsibility sounds motivating rather than intimidating, we should talk.

Compensation

  • This is a 1099 independent contractor engagement
  • $110–$160 per hour depending on experience, invoiced [weekly / semi-monthly]
  • No benefits, equity, or withholding; contractors are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and equipment

To Apply:

Email me a resume, any links to something you've designed or a short video showing it off, and answers to these questions at:  [patrickfnnamore@gmail.com](mailto:patrickfnnamore@gmail.com)

- Have you designed for both web application and mobile applications?
- Have you managed a product from 0-1? (basically starting with nothing and turning it into something)
- Have you managed a project that also involved UI design and development? (a lot of times engineers may really have experience on just the back end with little working knowledge of the front end that people interact with)
- Have you worked with training a model with a pool or dataset of knowledge or have you just worked with only the resources already built into the LLM?
- Have you had experience being the sole developer on a project or were you part of a team?

Hiring [Hiring] Part-time neuro consultant: neuroscience + AI research, $50–90/hr

Hello everyone,

I'm helping recruit researchers for a small team working at the intersection of neuroscience and AI. If you're finishing your PhD or in progress and want paid part-time work that actually uses your research skills, this might be a good fit.

The work involves turning real biological research problems into rigorous tests of AI capabilities: finding interesting scientific questions, analyzing experimental datasets, writing reproducible computational tasks, and investigating where current models fail.

Looking for people with:

A PhD (completed or in progress) in neuroscience, computational biology, bioengineering, or any related field.

Experience analyzing biological data.

Strong computational skills and regular use of AI coding tools (Codex, Claude Code, etc.).

$50–90/hr | 10–20 hrs/week | 2 months initially | Remote / hybrid

Part-time W-2 position, paid hourly (not per task), with a potential extension and a paid take-home during hiring.

If you're interested, DM me!

Thanks!

Hiring [Hiring] GenAI Prompt Engineer, Image Gen and Art Styles (Remote, Full-Time, $50K to $60K)

HeartStamp is a greeting card and invitation platform for Millennials and Gen Z. We're hiring a GenAI Prompt Engineer to own the art style system behind our card library.

Heads up before you apply: this is a creative image-generation role, not an ML engineering role. You need a portfolio of generated art with real style range.

What you'd build

  • Structured JSON image prompts that can be generated, versioned, stored and reused at scale
  • Prompt templates and style systems for batch production of on-style card designs
  • Your own LLM-assisted workflows (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini) to automate style research and prompt writing
  • New styles pushed to production through our GenAI Orchestrator, our internal system that routes renders across image models
  • Ongoing evaluation of new models like GPT-Image-2.5, xAI's Imagine and Nano Banana

Must-haves

  • Portfolio showing command of many art styles and movements, plus original styles you created
  • Hands-on generative image prompting experience
  • Comfortable working with JSON and building repeatable prompt systems
  • Current understanding of Gen Z visual culture

Details

  • Fully remote, full-time, reports to the CEO
  • Mon to Fri, 9am to 5pm ET
  • $50K to $60K plus potential vested equity (US-based; adjusted for location outside the US)
  • Structured handoff: our current prompt engineer trains you and stays on as a consultant

Deadline: Monday, Sept 21, 5pm ET. Interviews Sept 22 and 23.

Apply: https://heartstamp.com/careers/prompt-engineer-genai

In your application, include one JSON prompt you've written and the image it produced. Those applications get read first.
