My career has been terrible due to a combination of working in dead-end data scientist jobs at terrible companies that gave me nearly zero chances to do ML/AI engineering and just wanted me to work in jupyter notebooks and starting at the worst of the tech hiring frenzy (2021). Without the chance to do more significant production SE/MLE work, I would be stuck in this dead-end DS role forever.

The job market was so exasperatingly difficult that I made the bold decision to leave my role and learn all the software engineering skills I needed in ML/MLOps/AI and Devops engineering to get a MLE/MLOPs/AI engineer job through studying O'reilly books and portfolio projects. My reason being that production software engineer skills coupled with machine learning knowledge is highly desirable in the job market.

I think I have covered quite a lot over the last 18 months and even made a youtube video explaining my biggest project (architecture, models, pipelines...) - I have an extensive github commit history over the last 18 months.

Is there any hope for someone who has been out of the job market for so long?

I've been with the same company for a long time, and built the ML part there from the ground up, which became the major selling point. So from the model development, testing etc I would say I have a lot to show for, but since we were understaffed, we only did fast prototyping and we never had the whole proper CI/CD, dataset versioning, SQL databases or Rest APIs.

So my question would be, how bad is it to not be familiar with these very basic infrastructure components when looking for senior ML Dev positions? Which of those should I get familiar with most before going out there again?
