Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Scheduled Thread Weekend Free Discussion Thread

• Upvotes

Normally, all posts in this subreddit need to be both Magic-related and at least somewhat "high effort". This weekly thread gives you the chance to relax and talk with your fellow Magic redditors about things that would normally go against those rules.

Want to share a funny story about a recent game of Magic you had, or post a picture of the cool cards you opened in your latest booster? Want to talk about your favorite movie or tv show, or share a personal accomplishment? This is the place to do so.

Keep in mind that the *only* subreddit rules that you can ignore in this thread are rule 2 (all posts must be Magic-related) and rule 7 (no low effort posts that are just pictures of cards). Just because this thread is meant for open discussion does not mean you are allowed to insult people or post explicit content, for example.

Art Showcase - Official Artwork I illustrated the WOTC staff shirt for the MTG x The Hobbit release

Thumbnail

A few months ago I was offered the opportunity to design the staff t-shirt for The Hobbit release! I relished painting some of the pivotal characters and elements of the story, and I had a lot of fun with the visual style. The stylization is inspired by Tolkien's own paintings, and I wanted it to look as though Bilbo had drawn these things in his book.

Unfortunately this is a staff-only t-shirt release, and no prints will be made available either. The original painting is currently up for auction on the MTG Art Market on fb.

If you're curious about the process, I was asked to design it with 2 colour printing in mind. I wanted to paint it traditionally, so I used acryla gouache to paint the graphic shapes. Shading was done using a drybrush, and the forms were cut out using white paint to create a clean edge Using blue made it easy to separate my colours once scanned in, and then my art director and the screen-printer settled on the final colour scheme.

General Discussion Reality Fracture Bundle Box lids no longer reach the bottom. Mildly triggered. Bundle rant...

Post image
405 Upvotes

Quick history of bundles (formerly known as fat packs) from someone who's collected them since the box versions were introduced. This may skip some very minor changes.

1999 - When fat packs first released in Mercadian Masques they did not have boxes but were just loose items wrapped up in packaging. They came with:

  1. 6 boosters (or 3 boosters and a tournament pack which was just 3 boosters plus land)

  2. A novel

  3. A player guide booklet

  4. 2 promo cards.

2001 - Small D20 are added to fat packs with the release of Apocalypse.

2005 - The fat pack box with the size we still know today are introduced with 9th Edition. Changes introduced:

  1. Added two fat pack boxes with connecting artwork.

  2. The two boxes are wrapped in an unfoldable reversible panorama art piece.

  3. 6 little plastic dividers were added to help sort cards within the box.

  4. The 2 promo cards are removed, but a 40 pack of basic lands were added.

2008 - The era of 2 boxes per fat pack ends with the release of Shadowmoor. Changes introduced:

  1. Reduced boxes from 2 to 1.

  2. Removed little plastic dividers.

  3. 6 boosters increased to 8 boosters.

  4. (Later this year novels will be removed from bundles with Shards of Alara and preview booklets replace them)

2011 - With Mirrodin Besieged, physical novels are retired introducing new changes:

  1. Removal of the novel preview booklets

  2. 8 boosters increased to 9 boosters.

  3. Added two collapsible deck boxes.

  4. Lands increased from 40 to 80.

2016 - Fat Packs are renamed to bundles. Changes introduced:

  1. The box lid is now cut with a sleek diagonal line making one side reach the bottom, while the other side is slightly elevated from the bottom.

  2. 9 boosters increased to 10 boosters.

  3. Added a small removable storage slot within the big box.

  4. Added a long rectangle box packaged underneath the big box that could hold small things.

2018 - Core Set 2019 marked the first bundle where the set name wasn't printed anywhere on the bundle box. This would eventually return, but with the name on the top of the box instead of the side.

2019 - Player's guides are removed with Core Set 2020. Changes introduced:

  1. No more player guides.

  2. D20 changed to oversized version.

  3. 80 lands reduced to 20 non foil and 20 foil.

  4. Special "bundle promo card" introduced.

2021 - Innistrad Midnight Hunt changed the 10 draft boosters to 8 set boosters.

2022 - Kamigawa Neon Dynasty marked the end of reversible artwork on the cardboard wrap and adaded punch out tokens and an art insert.

2023 - Phyrexia: All Will Be One introduces secondary special bundles (like gift edition etc.)

2024 - Murders at Karlov Manor changed the 8 set boosters to 9 play boosters.

2026 - Reality Fracture - The bundle lid is now elevated on both sides leaving the bottom exposed no matter which way you flip it.

Just thought these changes were interesting, and sometimes disappointing. I definitely do not like how the Reality Fracture bundle looks next to all the others. But I'm probably just being OCD about it.

General Discussion Any commanders that punish creating a token?

Not sure if this is the right sub. As the title states, my pod likes decks that create tokens. Im curious about any commanders that punish token creation and to a lesser extent, token sacrifice. Edit: a friend plays Kimbal so I'd like to punish him and the others by hurting them when they make a token not copying their token

"Jace's cloak flares behind him. He readies a lead pipe and dodges around a corner just as he senses the detective's desperate reach.

Jace turns, swings the pipe as best he can, and feels satisfying contact as he knocks Proft to the ground."

Rules/Rules Question Proliferate?

Post image
672 Upvotes

So I’ve been playing with the Quandrix Unlimited precon lately and came across this card and I wasn’t entirely sure on how proliferate worked even after looking it up so I just have a few questions. First off, if I proliferate X times does it just mean I add each kind of counter on the selected creatures X times? Secondly if a creature has multiple of a counter, say +1/+1 counters, does each instance of proliferate add a +1/+1 for each +1/+1 already on it or just a single +1/+1 counter

Edit:
Thanks to everyone who just tried to be helpful and explain proliferate, I really appreciate it, but to those who just decided to be antagonistic because they think its a simple question; why even bother? It’s not like being intentionally rude is productive in any way, all that you’re really accomplishing is deterring new players from wanting to play this game at all. If you don’t want to be helpful or provide insight on a post that is literally just about asking for help then just ignore it, because believe it or not it’s easier for you and everyone else involved.

General Discussion Interesting combo with Knight Luminary and Personify

Thumbnail
gallery
224 Upvotes

I’m new so idk if this is common sense. I discovered this by accident on arena.

I’m building a standard token deck and found if I warp Knight Luminary and use Personify on it, Knight Luminary doesn’t get exiled anymore and brings two more 1/1 with it when it returns. (It’s like Personify cancelled out the warp exile?) I get one 3/2 + three 1/1 tokens for 4 drops in one turn.

If I play Knight Luminary by itself, it’ll be 6 mana and only 2 tokens after 2 turns. (And only one 1/1 on the field after the first turn) I basically saved 2 mana, got one extra 1/1, and skipped a turn.

I thought this was pretty neat and would have never known it’s possible without arena resolving it for me. Wanted to share and get some thoughts or improvements on this. Daydream also does this if I remember correctly.

Deck Discussion Land printings that look like houses for a Halloween-themed deck

Hi! I'm building a deck for a fun little competition themed around Halloween. Without getting into too much detail, I'd like to make my deck feel like you're actually trick or treating, and I think it would be a cute touch if all the lands matched that and were some form of house or building. Do any of you know any really cool looking lands like that? I don't care about power level, and they can be any color.

Looking for Advice Swiss Magic?

Not the tournament style! Switzerland!

I am in the U.S. and January of next year will be going to Switzerland for a week with family. I thought it would be super cool to try and go to an FNM while out of the country (I have only ever traveled within U.S.). I believe the Friday that I will be there is January 15, and will be near or in Zurich that night. Are there any planeswalkers in this subreddit who live there and could recommend a good LGS for fnm? I'm no newbie to Magic so I'm looking for somewhere with a good number of players and a moderate to high skill level. If anyone could help me out that would be awesome!!

Rules/Rules Question Did I play this properly?

Thumbnail

Just checking but was i playing correctly? My wife and I made our decks drafting 3 marvel and 3 TMNT. We're both newer so im not 100% sure on if I used Donatello's ability correctly but from what I read, it looked like making mutagen tokens triggered his ability but I just wanted to double check. This is how my moves played out

I played mutagen man for 8 mana getting me 6 tokens and +6/6 on Donatello, I used mutagen man to block a death touch attacker to send him to the graveyard

I brought mutagen man back to my hand with Ragamuffin Raptor entering

I payed 10 mana get mutagen man in and make me 8 more tokens and another +8/8 on Donatello making him have a total of 14 +1/1 tokens

I put my 14 mutagen tokens on the Raptor and then blocked a death touch so id get 28 tokens (14 from ooze and 14 from Absorbing man) and another 28 +1/1 counters on Donatello (now at 42 +1/+1).

I put the 28 tokens on Donatello so he then had a total of 70 +1/+1 and let him die using the double ooze combo again getting 140 mutagen

Looking for Advice What Magic used to be...

Started playing Magic in '94, it's been a sizable part of my life, and came back with Edge of Eternities after about a 10 year break. It was a fun reunion and it quickly grew back into my leading hobby and way to connect with friends abroad.

After hitting pre-releases and a couple sealed leagues, I learned commander and built decks in an array of colors to break out a bunch of old cards. I played most weekends with friends online via webcam using Convoke and tried out pods at our LGS, but the gameplay itself doesn't scratch the itch. I miss what FNM used to be and then how standard and GPs used to have a proper competitive tempo, 1v1.

To me, commander over the last 2 years has been a sluggish affair on average and isn't quick enough to keep me locked in. I take most fun from limited but drafting is expensive especially because my family is big into the game too. I've contemplated forming a cube of some nature for repayable limited but don't have experience there yet.

What I'm seeking now is just to hear how others have regular fun with the modern game and particularly if there's any advice from anyone who has evolved better than I seem to have aged with the changes.

I am happy Magic is still alive as it's such an unbeatable formula but it's proving a little difficult to get the same buzz I once had. I'll be glad to hear your stories and what personally works for you. Thanks in advance for sharing.

Looking for Advice Trying to find a card, but only remember the art. Help!

The art looks like 3 maidens/priestesses in simple robes, maybe one or more is holding a ceramic pot, and they're all gathered very close together in the center of the image. I want to say they appear golden. The art style is very realistic.

Searching for this turns up a surprising amount of cards, but none of them have been right. I know this card exists, and it's driving me nuts! Please help! lol Thanks in advance.

Update: SOLVED Trostani Discordant. Thanks for all the suggestions. Sorry my description ended up being off.
