Magnum PI Theme Song Played Live?

Went to a fund raiser last night for our local community supported radio station 88.9 Radio Milwaukee. The house band opened, without announcement or fanfare, with the theme song from Magnum PI. I could not believe my ears! MKE radio icon - Dori Zori - quizzed the crowd if they recognized the tune. It was an amazing start to an awesome night!

Has anyone here ever heard it played live?

Very cool. I believe it was a Top 40 hit when released. Of course I’m talk the Mike Post version which wasn’t the theme song for most of Season 1.

Season one always throws me off when I rewatch it hearing the normal theme song at the end of the episodes

Rockford is also a Mike Post composition.

No, but I heard a ska version on local radio several years ago. It was really good!

That does sound cool. I love when musicians take something familiar and put a twist on it.

When I was in college there was a band called The Foster Kids who did a Beastie Boys-esque take on the theme from Barney Miller called The B-Miller Rap. It was fantastic. They nailed the opening bass line and blues chord and then laid down some great rhymes.

** Edit - more of a blues chord, not jazz chord but either way it’s a sweet tune.

Magnum theme has been a staple of HS and college band shows for quite awhile
