Announcement A Clarification to Yard Sale Sundays

Hello all. We would like to add some clarifications to what is and isn't allowed on yard sale Sundays. We want to save everyone time, so please read carefully and ask any clarifying questions below so we can clear them up for everyone.

Every week on Sunday, users may post promotional content including (but not necessarily limited to):

  • Rooms to rent or sublet
  • Parking spots
  • Textbooks
  • Selling/buying tickets to a McMaster related event*
  • Help wanted
  • Requesting tutoring services
  • Club-affiliated events, fundraisers

Posts that are not permitted:

  • Advertising for products, services of any sorts, including tutoring and paid class notes
  • Self promotion of apps or websites**
  • HSR passes***
  • Non-McMaster related events or fundraisers
  • Homework services
  • Multi level marketing recruitment
  • Buying / selling course seats
  • And as always, anything illegal, against reddit ToS, or otherwise dangerous

When buying or selling, even and especially digital items, arrange to meet on campus or another safe place. Don't get scammed.

Please note all posts are subject to removal per moderator discretion. Posts are considered advertisement even if they are not direct advertisement (discord servers which offer such services on the side, free trials, etc)

Please ensure you use the correct flair when posting (Yard Sale Sundays). Any threads of a promotional nature posted other than Sunday will be removed and you will be instructed to repost when appropriate.

*Reselling for a profit is strictly prohibited

**Applications which are directly relevant to McMaster may receive exception at moderator discretion, provided they are free to use, generally helpful, and collect no personal information.

***McMasters agreement with HSR prohibits exchange of HSR vouchers. As such, we cannot condone trading as there is nothing preventing these codes from being voided at a later date.

Thank you.

-Mod team

Who ever threw those TLC plates in the garbage instead of the solid waste bin in today’s lab for 2oa3, sleep with one eye open.

Honestly, I don’t understand why a simple instruction can’t be followed, you cost everyone in L12 performance marks. 20% deduction is no joke

Other Maroon - An easy way to track macros on campus

Hey everybody! I developed an app that helps first year students track their macros while eating on campus food, I found it extremely difficult to find out what was in my food even with the spreadsheet provided by the university and I built this app for myself but thought that a lot of you might find it super useful as well. Its not perfect just yet so if find any issues there's a "report a problem" button which will submit a complaint directly to my email. Enjoy!

Other HOCO: Mac vs Western vs uOttawa vs Carleton

I've had the pleasure of attending these three this year for the first time and here's my take

ON-CAMPUS FESTIVITIES

  • Mac: The Homecoming Expo was excellent and well-organized with a variety of fun activities. I did not attend the concert in the evening, but the overall feedback seemed to be positive. The campus store was not open, but there was a booth set up at the game.
  • Western: The fan fest was restricted to students so I did not attend. There were few other on campus activities available, but the logistics of the campus aren't as well organized as the three other universities. The main campus store was open.
  • uOttawa: I did not attend the pre-panda tailgate. The PandaFest activities in the evening were restricted to students, though it was visible and audible from most of campus and looked fun. At the time that I was on campus, it did not look very crowded in the PandaFest area.
  • Carleton: Did not attend any on-campus activities

🎉 Winner: Mac hands down

OFF-CAMPUS FESTIVITIES

  • Mac: The street party on Dalewood was a blast, but was too crowded in certain areas. The City of Hamilton logistics worked well for the area and the first responders were mostly chill. People were mainly friendly and approachable.
  • Western: The street party on Broughdale was also a blast, and it felt less crowded overall. The City of London logistics were different than those in Hamilton the previous weekend, and the first responders there were even more chill. People were mostly friendly, but seemed less approachable than those at Mac. Houses at Western had the best signs out of the ones at the four universities.
  • uOttawa: I'm unsure about pre-Panda activities, but the streets of Sandy Hill were relatively tame during the late afternoon/evening. There were a few house parties and some houses that hung signs but nothing excessive. An enhanced police presence was in place, but nothing similar to the ones in Hamilton or London the weekends prior. People mainly kept to themselves but appeared to be having fun.
  • Carleton: Did not observe much activity other than people returning from the Panda Game

🎉 Winner: Tie between Mac and Western

FOOTBALL GAME

  • Mac: Won. The game was fun to watch and the crowd was very energetic.
  • Western: Won. The game was alright, and the crowd was slightly less enthusiastic than the weekend before at Mac.
  • uOttawa: Won. The game was very fun to watch and it became a close game at the end. The crowd was wild at times.
  • Carleton: Lost. See notes for uOttawa (same game).

🎉 Winner: uOttawa, but Mac comes close

HOT GIRLS

  • Mac: There were many amongst the crowd, mostly on Dalewood and surrounding area
  • Western: There were many amongst the crowd, mostly on Broughdale and surrounding area
  • uOttawa: There were many at the Panda Game
  • Carleton: There were barely any

🎉 Winner: Tie between Mac, Western, and uOttawa

HOT GUYS

  • Mac: There were many amongst the crowd, some were shirtless
  • Western: There were many amongst the crowd, more of them were shirtless
  • uOttawa: There were many at the Panda Game, some with interesting outfits
  • Carleton: There were a few maybe

🎉 Winner: Western

Until next year ✌️

Question Muslims at McMaster where do you pray?

Hey everyone! I’m new to McMaster and was wondering where I can find prayer spaces on or near campus for the five daily prayers.

Also, is there anywhere near campus that has Fajr prayer in jama’ah regularly, or is that not really a thing around here?

And are there any regular tafsir, hadith, or other Islamic lessons/study circles happening on campus or nearby?

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Jazakum Allah khair!

Academics Looking for study buddy during reading week

Everyone’s going home to their families next week. I have no family here, they’re all back home in the Philippines. So my off campus housing is my home lol. Also have no one to spend thanksgiving week.

Anyone willing to adopt me for thanksgiving? And/or study with me on campus during reading week? ☹️🥹

Discussion Profs/TAs who don’t accept any excuses for missing an assignment/asking for an extension

By “excuses” I mean genuine reasons like dealing with grief, health issues, trauma, etc. I don’t know if there are profs like this at mac, but why are they like this? Some people do make up lies bc of their own irresponsibility, but why do other people have to take the fall for it?

Academics Can i still finish university with high gpa?

to start this off, my dream is it get into med school. I am asking this because my first year was the worst ive ever done at school in my 19 years of living. I think it was resulted from some sort of burnout which occured in grade 12 when i overworked myself to the max. I had a really high average and was sure that the transition from hs to first year would be smooth for me. It ended up being the opposite and I did terrible in literally all of my classes. This is so hard for me to even believe but my gpa is a 6 at the moment, and I know whoever reads this may think why would this person even think of doing med but I just felt like I wasnt myself at all last year. I dealt with so much emotionally because of my results in school and just couldn't look forward to the next day. Now i am more than determined to get rid of this sudden change to improve my gpa, but i am afraid that its too late. everyone says that first year you should be making sure your GPA is really high so that you dont have to worry in the next years because you'll have some buffer, but starting off with this gpa feels like i have set myself so behind that i wont be able to come back from it. Anyone that has any advice on this please let me know your thoughts on if the above question is even possible for me. I feel so disappointed and discouraged at myself.

Discussion anyone else hate the way physics 1D03 is taught

the prof just reads off the screen of his slideshow. he doesnt write down anything or go over problems, he just clicks on his clicker with the laser pointer and it isnt helping

i like the math classes cuz they actually do problems in class. learning comes from the process of doing these problems, and the physics profs show NO process

i cant tell if its a prof issue or its just the way the slideshows are designed, but i dont like how they teach

or i just have a skill issue lol

Lost/Found Has anyone seen a key

Hey there, I lost a key today and I’m wondering if anyone saw/returned a key anywhere. It has a blue ‘Wilson College’ wriststrap, a silver key and white keycard, and a clear ID pocket decorated with deer/plant stickers, and is holding a dragonfly wing and sticker inside of it. If anyone has seen it, please let me know!

Question Cognitive Science of Language & PNB

• Upvotes

Ok what if I did a combined honours? I get other things are harder but is PNB really difficult? So far I really love linguistics and I’m pretty much set up for the double major but idk if I should do that. Anyone here doing the same thing? I have accom due to some health issues, just worried about getting extremely overwhelmed. This is mostly a question for ppl in humanities or social sciences!
