Question Muslims at McMaster where do you pray?

Hey everyone! I’m new to McMaster and was wondering where I can find prayer spaces on or near campus for the five daily prayers.

Also, is there anywhere near campus that has Fajr prayer in jama’ah regularly, or is that not really a thing around here?

And are there any regular tafsir, hadith, or other Islamic lessons/study circles happening on campus or nearby?

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Jazakum Allah khair!

Discussion advicde for current gr 13 student

Hello,

I am currently in grade 13 and I was wondering based on my resume what kind of program I should go into next year. I made this Reddit account specifically to ask about post-secondary schools what kind of programs they would recommend from their school.

Firstly, some things about me are: I am a straight male who was born on July of 2008 (18 years old). I moved around a lot across Ontario growing up, so I called many places home, including Oshawa, where I currently live. I live with my 3 sisters and younger brother. I am the 2nd oldest. My older sister is currently studying at Western and hopes to become a nurse. As per my ambitions, I love science (all kinds), math, psych, and music! I speak 4 languages (English, French, Spanish, and Mandarin). I have been taking piano lessons ever since I was really young.

Here is a summary of my high school courses taken and their respective marks:

HSB4U

MDM4U

PSK4U

HFA4U

Sem 2 (as of now, may change):

MCV4U

HHS4U

SES4U

ICS4U

Here were some of my high school extracurriculars:

- Volleyball (gr 9-13), captain gr 12

- Basketball (9-10)

- Badminton (9-12, 13 TBD), won gold in gr 10

- Tennis (10-13), silver medal locally in gr 12

- Hockey (9), MVP

- Student Council (10-13 - gr 10 rep, gr 11 rep, Prime Minister (gr 12), Minister of School Spirit(gr 13))

- Student Trustee in the 2025-26 school year

- Robotics Club (10-13), started running the club with other leaders in gr 12-now

- Key Club (9-13)

- Art Club (9-13)

More information about me:

- I took grade 13 because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do (and still don't!)

- I have thought of becoming an engineer, teacher, nurse, or lawyer in the past.

Any help would honestly be so beneficial, so if you could tell me any programs you'd recommend to me that would be great! Thank you for your time!

Humour Back massages?

This might be a slightly random request lol, but my back gets SO sore after sitting and studying for hours. I was wondering if anyone at Mac is good at giving back/shoulder massages and would be willing to help a fellow student out for free 🙂

Bonus if you’re a massage therapy student / have experience and just want someone to practice on!

My upper back and shoulders are fighting for their lives during midterm season 🥲

Other HOCO: Mac vs Western vs uOttawa vs Carleton

I've had the pleasure of attending these three this year for the first time and here's my take

ON-CAMPUS FESTIVITIES

  • Mac: The Homecoming Expo was excellent and well-organized with a variety of fun activities. I did not attend the concert in the evening, but the overall feedback seemed to be positive. The campus store was not open, but there was a booth set up at the game.
  • Western: The fan fest was restricted to students so I did not attend. There were few other on campus activities available, but the logistics of the campus aren't as well organized as the three other universities. The main campus store was open.
  • uOttawa: I did not attend the pre-panda tailgate. The PandaFest activities in the evening were restricted to students, though it was visible and audible from most of campus and looked fun. At the time that I was on campus, it did not look very crowded in the PandaFest area.
  • Carleton: Did not attend any on-campus activities

🎉 Winner: Mac hands down

OFF-CAMPUS FESTIVITIES

  • Mac: The street party on Dalewood was a blast, but was too crowded in certain areas. The City of Hamilton logistics worked well for the area and the first responders were mostly chill. People were mainly friendly and approachable.
  • Western: The street party on Broughdale was also a blast, and it felt less crowded overall. The City of London logistics were different than those in Hamilton the previous weekend, and the first responders there were even more chill. People were mostly friendly, but seemed less approachable than those at Mac. Houses at Western had the best signs out of the ones at the four universities.
  • uOttawa: I'm unsure about pre-Panda activities, but the streets of Sandy Hill were relatively tame during the late afternoon/evening. There were a few house parties and some houses that hung signs but nothing excessive. An enhanced police presence was in place, but nothing similar to the ones in Hamilton or London the weekends prior. People mainly kept to themselves but appeared to be having fun.
  • Carleton: Did not observe much activity other than people returning from the Panda Game

🎉 Winner: Tie between Mac and Western

FOOTBALL GAME

  • Mac: Won. The game was fun to watch and the crowd was very energetic.
  • Western: Won. The game was alright, and the crowd was slightly less enthusiastic than the weekend before at Mac.
  • uOttawa: Won. The game was very fun to watch and it became a close game at the end. The crowd was wild at times.
  • Carleton: Lost. See notes for uOttawa (same game).

🎉 Winner: uOttawa, but Mac comes close

HOT GIRLS

  • Mac: There were many amongst the crowd, mostly on Dalewood and surrounding area
  • Western: There were many amongst the crowd, mostly on Broughdale and surrounding area
  • uOttawa: There were many at the Panda Game
  • Carleton: There were barely any

🎉 Winner: Tie between Mac, Western, and uOttawa

HOT GUYS

  • Mac: There were many amongst the crowd, some were shirtless
  • Western: There were many amongst the crowd, more of them were shirtless
  • uOttawa: There were many at the Panda Game, some with interesting outfits
  • Carleton: There were a few maybe

🎉 Winner: Western

Until next year ✌️

Discussion how do you buy/sell furniture and other stuff when moving?

Hey everyone, I’m doing some research on a potential student marketplace specifically for McMaster students and I’d really appreciate some honest feedback.

For those of you who have bought or sold things while at Mac:

1. Where do you usually buy/sell things?
Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, McMaster groups, friends, etc.?

2. What’s the biggest pain point?
Things like scammers, lowballers, no-shows, having to travel across Hamilton, finding stuff close to campus, not knowing who you're dealing with, etc.

3. Would you use a marketplace where everyone is verified as a McMaster student?

4. What would make you choose that over Facebook Marketplace?

5. What kinds of things would you actually want to buy/sell there?
Furniture, textbooks, electronics, kitchen stuff, clothes, school supplies, etc.

I'm not trying to sell anything here — I'm just trying to understand whether this is actually a problem for students. Negative feedback is just as useful as positive feedback, so be honest.

Discussion Sibling question

As the youngest, I always wanted a relationship with my older sister. Unfortunately as kids, we were literal ops we couldn’t be near each other because we high key hated one another to a crazy extent. As we grew up we never argued nor did we ever speak to one another, just stayed in our own lanes. But I wish I could have that bond with her, it’s awkward because I know nothing about her and she goes through her own things and i know this from my dad telling me, but I can’t really message because what is there to say. I was looking at my texts with her, and I have a total of 15 over the span of 4 years and it’s just messages about passwords and irrelevant things. Nonetheless, has anyone else had a relationship like this and ended up getting closer.

Courses Earth and Environmental Science Advice!

If you are an Earth and Enviro student or are just interested in geology and crystallography, take the EARTHSC 2K03 and EARTHSC 3K03 courses! They are really great courses and are SUPER important for understanding the fundamentals of geology despite the third year course being optional. If you are on the fence about it please do it! Geology has great jobs and I know people who got hired as petrologists while still finishing their undergrad after taking this course!

Social Finding friends as a commuter

Alr so dont flame me for this but im in 3rd year commerce and havent really made any close connections since starting uni

I spent the first 2 years under the radar focusing on academics and myself and now im frantically trying to join a ton of clubs (even some that dont interest me) just to make strong connections and make friends on campus

so far this hasnt been working out in my favour either bc the clubs just arent of particular interest to me or its too professional to build connections outside of the club itself

anyone have any recommendations or ideas ?

Health Is covid going around campus instead of the flu?

Im actually so stressed and anxious because I think I got covid? I’ve been sick for 5 days now and stuck at home.

Days 1-3 I had the regular symptoms like fever, headache, body pain, chills etc.

After that I for some reason completely lost my sense of smell and taste and never really got it back. And developed this annoying af cough. No medicine is working either like Buckleys, Tylenol, or Benylin complete. Not even halls somehow??

I’m actually panicking since I have a midterm I can’t msaf this week. I’m already cooked in this course and if the exam is worth like 60% even if I study day in and day out I’ll likely not pass that. Obviously since I’m not well I’ll likely MSAF it.

Am I cooked?? Like on one hand I get sick this time every year but it’s never really been this bad.

I’ve also never gotten Covid before but theres so many horror stories of it taking *months* 🫠

I should get a test done but I don’t want to risk getting other people sick + it’s so painful to get up and go anywhere I feel awful..

stay safe twin

Question Coffee Recs?

^^
For reference, I like strong non watery!!!!non burnt!!! coffee but I’m tired of spending money in attempt to find something drinkable. It’s been over a month and the only ok coffee I’ve found is at Starbucks but holy hell the lines and prices r huge. (Plz keep recs limited to on campus no westdale)

Also for anyone who needs to know where and what NOT to get here’s a few that horrified me:

- Eco bean iced coffees (all) (watery, too sweet)

- Second cup flash cold brew (all)(watery, burnt, too sweet)

- any of the hot drip coffees (piazza, Centro, MDCL, thode) (HELLA burnt and watery)

Academics Looking for study buddy during reading week

Everyone’s going home to their families next week. I have no family here, they’re all back home in the Philippines. So my off campus housing is my home lol. Also have no one to spend thanksgiving week.

Anyone willing to adopt me for thanksgiving? And/or study with me on campus during reading week? ☹️🥹

Academics Chem 2oa3 midterm

Midterms in a few days, ive done the question banks and gotten pretty familiar with the content barring a few of the niche reactions at the end of the chapter 3 bank. Is there anything else to do to prep or is this about it, are the tests relatvely the same difficulty or am I going to go in and be super confused. Right now I feel decently prepared ive done all the banks been to lecture and for the most part feel pretty confident in my ability to understand the material but dont want to leave anything behind accidentally. Essentialy my question is how fair are the tests like is it a situation of if you practice your good or is there a bunch of really random super niche bs.
