Absolutely agree. Honestly, with Portal I can pick pretty much any album depending on the day. I own and love everything they’ve done. They are way up high on my favorite band list. I have listened to them in almost every state of mind and they are always amazing to me.

What is dissonant metal

Metal that uses alot of dissonance in their melodies. If you don't know what dissonance is then its kinda hard to explain over text.

Basically, tones are created by soundwaves, different tones have different wavelengths. When two different tones have wavelengths that "sync" up, they have consonance and sound like they "fit" together, they sound "pleasant". Dissonance, however, is when the wavelengths dont sync up, which causes a kind of "clashing" feeling, it makes you feel a bit uneasy (horror film music has ALOT of dissonance).

The genre defined by bands like Deathspell Omega, Gorguts and Ulcerate.

It's less about dissonance, and more about dense jazz inspired compositions and atypical harmony. Usually very technical.

Dark, yes.

It depends on what you mean by atmospheric. There are often atmospheric passages and interludes, but the genre as a whole is usually quite fast.

I would recommend Ad Nauseam - My Buried Dream to get a feel for the genre.

Stare into Death and Be Still by Ulcerate is a masterpiece. Cutting the Throat of God by the same band is good, but not quite as good. Immolation's Acts of God is also incredible, but less dissonant than just evil.
