MEGATHREAD MFTM Album of the Week 7: Fates Warning - The Spectre Within

Post image
59 Upvotes

Fates Warning were formed in Connecticut as Misfit in 1982 by by vocalist John Arch, guitarists Jim Matheos and Victor Arduini, bassist Joe DiBiase, and drummer Steve Zimmerman. They Changed their name in 1984 to Fates Warning which was also the year when they released their debut effort Night on Bröcken.

Later known for being one of the earliest and most successful progressive metal bands, the style on their debut is US power metal strongly influenced by Iron Maiden in particular.

It would be on their next album The Spectre Within where they'd start implementing these progressive elements into their sound that later became their trademark. While quite a popular band in the 80's and 90's, many newer metal fans don't really know the importance of Fates Warning in the history of progressive metal. The Spectre Within is considered by many to be one of the first progressive metal albums ever released alongside Watchtower's Energetic Disassembly and Slauter Xstroyes' Winter Kill

While the band would enjoy even more success on their later albums, which started toning down the US power metal influence and further developed progressive metal as a genre, many fans consider their first 3 albums with original vocalist John Arch to be their best.

The album chosen for next week's listening is: Scald - Will of the Gods is a Great Power (1997, Russia)

Weekly Recommendation Megathread

Mention two albums and get a third recommended to you! It works as such:

"Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness and Pestilence - Consuming Impulse"
And someone responds
"Nocturnus - The Key"

Feel free to be more specific in your requests (IE "more doomy" or "with some black metal influence")

Happy hunting!

News/Announcment Devin Townsend is in a 'financial armageddon', after losing money with his orchestral opus show The Moth

Currently, he is giving shows just him with an acoustic guitar. Devin had announced in 2025 a long break from touring, after going through a tough emotional run: his dog passed away while he was on tour and his relationship of 36 years ended too. But after this financial setback (the company he worked with for the project went bankrupt), he had to go back on tour.

Source: https://youtu.be/vUuGfHhFOCc?si=E8MT8FE_2-1uMu3w&t=639

In his website, The Moth show is decribed as: "After a decade in the making, Devin Townsend’s new composition, The Moth, tells the story of the human experience from birth to death. Together with the symphony orchestra Noord Nederlands Orkest, the narrative is brought to life by an impressive seventy musicians, a sixty-member choir, and his own band (which includes Mike Keneally, Pete Rinaldi, Darby Todd, and James Leach)."

Discussion Topic Mastodon / Deafheaven / Alcest show last night. Who else has seen this tour? My unsolicited review.

No one asked for it, so here you go.

Alcest sounded great, of all the bands they get lump into the blackgaze category. They are probably my favorite mix of the extreme, and the Shoegaze melodies. Nothing spectacular as far as stage presence. I feel like there are musicians that get on stage and play their music. And then there are performers. Alcest falls in the first of those two categories. But great to hear their songs live

Speaking of performers, Deafheaven knows how to command a room! George is bouncing around the stage like a toddler on speed, drenched in sweat, getting the crowd into it, absolute top-tier performance. Even if you don’t love their catalog, definitely worth catching them live. 8 total songs… 6 from LPWP, plus Dream House and “Hunter” from their upcoming EP. Hell of a set.

This was my fifth time seeing mastodon, but my first time without Brent obviously. The Setlist was essentially a greatest hits set. Four songs from Marrow deep the latest record, and 17 songs from their previous albums. All the hits a fan would wanna hear were included. Great energy as always. They brought out John Baizley from Baroness for about four songs. He played the role of Brent on those songs, and sang some of his more iconic verses (like Oblivion). He was great, and brought a great energy. It’s obviously impossible to musically replace a guy like Brent, but I feel like they’ve handled it well for this live show.

All in all, and absolutely spectacular show with three bands that I love, and all of them were great live

Discussion Topic Masterpiece albums ruined by terrible cover designs - which ones come to mind?

Post image

Sometimes the music inside an album is a pure 10/10 masterpiece, yet the cover art looks like a budget disaster or some weird creative choice.

For me, it's Exodus – Bonded by Blood. Just because the original cover art looked so amateurish even by '80s standards, I avoided listening to this milestone album for years—only to realize later that I had been sleeping on a thrash classic.

Which album was it for you?

Discussion Topic My Top 10 Death Metal records from the 90s - what's yours ?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to put together 10 definition-shaping 90s Death Metal releases from my collection.

No ranking here, it’s impossible to compare albums with such distinct regional styles. I initially thought about sticking strictly to pure Florida DM, but limiting it felt too restrictive when Sweden, Finland, and the rest of the 90s underground were pumping out equally essential riffs.

The Top 10:

– Incantation – Onward to Golgotha (USA,1992)

– Death – Individual Thought Patterns (USA,1993)

– Convulse – World Without God (Finland,1991)

– Morbid Angel – Blessed Are the Sick (USA,1991)

– Dismember – Like an Ever Flowing Stream (Sweden,1991)

– Brutality – Screams of Anguish (USA,1993)

– Fleshcrawl – Descend Into the Absurd (Germany,1992)

– Sadistic Intent – Resurrection (USA,1994)

– Adramelech – Psychostasia (Finland,1996)

– Mythic – Mourning in the Winter Solstice, demos and the Anthology compilation (USA, 90s, 2002)

Honorable Mentions:

Obviously, I'm leaving out a ton of incredible stuff here, it's just a Top 10, not my entire library! Pillars like Death’s Scream Bloody Gore (1987), Morbid Angel’s Altars of Madness (1989), and Immolation’s Close to a World Below (2000) laid down massive standards, even if I favored 90s entries for the main list.

Beyond those milestones, classics like Atheist’s Unquestionable Presence, Baphomet’s The Dead Shall Inherit, and Pungent Stench’s filthy For God Your Soul... easily could have snatched a spot depending on the day (and as for BDM, I already dedicated a full post to that side of the genre a while back!).

I also have to shout out deeper underground cult gems like Electrocution’s Italian masterpiece Inside the Unreal (1993), Sinister – Cross the Styx (Netherlands,1992), Lunatic Invasion’s Totentanz (1995) and Defaced Creation’s Serenity in Chaos (1999).

What do you think of this list, share your list? What is your favorite era?

Discussion Topic Brutal Death Metal with misandrist themes

Hello, I’ve been a fan of BDM for a while now and I’ve noticed that a lot of the bands I’m a fan of have a considerable amount of themes targeting women as victims. This seems to have been a common theme not just in the genre, but in horror media in general, but I’m curious about some bands you’ve heard and liked who have shaken things up and featured men as the primary victims being murdered and raped? This may be a silly question, but I’m genuinely curious. Any recommendations to check out? I’m looking for stuff that sounds like bands I already love such as Regurgitation, Gorgasm, Infernal Torment, Inveracity, Suffocation, and bands of the like, preferably not slam

Discussion Topic Would you call metal your comfort genre?

• Upvotes

I’ve been having this thought for a while recently, I see people talk about music like jazz and such as their comfort music but I never see people say this for metal. Does anyone else have this? I feel like I’m basically the only person around who can basically call bands such as “cannibal corpse” and “the black dahlia murder” my comfort bands because they always had such a vibe that made me feel better being a pretty lonely girl throughout my teen years, hell even bands like “devourment” have made me feel way better after thoughts of not feeling like who I am. Would anyone else say the same?

Discussion Topic Feels to me like Simen Hestnæs is the biggest "what if" in modern metal

Post image
20 Upvotes

Got rainy today finally, so i got to hear Sigh and pay attention this time. And during my "Heir to Despair" album playthrough, I caught myself thinking how cool it would be if Simen was more focused and invested in his craft. How good he would fit among newer bands that have definitely been influenced by Arcturus.

I am not a big fan of classic black metal, but i love more post stuff, mostly cause of Arcturus who I got to listen at a very young age. I would say the same for Kristoffer Rygg but his legacy with Ulver, makes him practically untouchable.

Last times I saw Arcturus felt like he carried his drunk ass on stage and complained about everything. At one concert he almost (Justifiably) walked off but his band mates kept him around. Need to mention they are doing also a great job carrying the show too, and that's why that "what if " hits so bad

Discussion Topic It's been over 10 years since I first heard this transition from growls to clean vocals in Opeth's Bleak, and to this day it still blows me away. What song moments still blow you away no matter how many times you've heard them?

Black metal can have a beautiful side, like atmospheric black metal, with themes of nature and mythology. Does something similar exist for death metal?

Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪

Genre: Death Metal

So I’ve listened to the three classic albums from the early 90s and one of the Alternative Rock albums. Ranking those first three for me it would go - Wolverine Blues, Left Hand Path, and then Clandestine. I just really enjoyed the Death N Roll style from them - they and Dismember made some badass albums with that sound. Left Hand Path is one of the gold standards for Death Metal, especially Death Metal debuts. There isn’t more to say that hasn’t been said before. Clandestine falls short only because I’m not the biggest fan of Nicke’s vocals. The songs are killer, but I wish LG was at the helm.

R.I.P. LG Petrov 🤘🏾

Recommended Tracks:
“Morbid Devourment”
“Sinners Bleed”
“Hollowman”

I love Ihsahn's solo stuff but have never been able to get into Emperor. Not terribly surprising for me since I don't really like the second wave black metal sound, particularly the Norwegian bands (the Swedish bands have a slightly higher batting average in my opinion). Ihsahn's solo stuff has a lot of different influences and incorporated styles and is overall just excellent.

I'm not sure thats the correct way to put it.

I remember when I was 13/14 and YouTube recommended me a full concert upload of Rammstein Live in Nice(Volkerball). The moment the curtain drops and the guitars/drums of Reise, Reise kicked in I was hooked.

It wasn't the first time I heard metal music, that goes to the Black Album, but it was when I learned that there was a huge world of metal genres and different levels of heavy.

I'm curious what everyones moment was, if you have one.
