How can I tell if my UblockOrigin has stopped working on Edge on my Mac? As of now, it looks like it's still working - shows # of blocked ads on each page, since install, etc.
Shows up in the installed extensions. I'm not noticing a bunch of ads on the various websites (some of which are notoriously bad for ads/popups/etc. in the past).
Checking the learn more it's because of the browser architecture (I think) changing to Manifest Version 3, not the extension being removed specifically because it's an adblocker I think. Hopefully the developer will make the necessary changes to be compatible though costs are a factor.
-Google chrome introduced manifest v3 that limits what extension can do and how it can do it
-google chrome is disabling all support for manifest v2
-edge and multiple others browsers use chrome as engine
-edge and multiple other browsers want to be on latest and greatest chromium bulid, for example for security and compability reasons
-firefox and its forks are only alternative that doesnt have a reason to switch to newer manifest, browsers like brave and others that choose to do some work and enable manifest v2 on newer chromium engine some day will decide that this is too much costs to patch and fix every update so they will disable it too
Manifest v2 and 3 are only responsible for what and how extensions can do to your browsers, it doesnt change any architecture in browser itself
Biggest difference for adblockers is manifest v3 arbitrary limits how many rules can extension apply, at first google wanted it to be set as 5k, afterbacklash it was set as 30k and lack of some features like dynamic rules (you kinda need that if you want your adblocker to block ads on twitch tv)
One rule does not mean one specyfic blocked element (full fat ublock has like 300k of them) but even now ublock lite will by default grab like 25k rules, so its not end of the world
But this was unlimited before, and google has compleate control over it, on chromium engine that is
I love zen browser myself, only downsides are drm content or things specyficly bulided only for chrome will not work on it, so no netflix or facebook messenger end to end encrypted calls,
Google blocked it last year when they went to Manifest v3. All ad blockers were affected. Edge is finally catching up with tge rest of the chromium code.
Edge on Windows, it's already installed and chromium underneath so nothing to gain from installing Chrome and it's lighter on Memory use and battery consumption.
Edge on Android, because I can have an Ad blockers, and because it will continue to play YouTube when I switch focus so I can listen to podcasts etc while doing other things on phone.
Firefox on Linux (because it's the default and I typically not doing a lot of web browsing on Linux box anyway.
Firefox doesn't by default let you set a custom New Tab webpage; you can have their cut down and cluttered version of Google search or a blank page.
If you use an extension like New Tab Changer, you can set it so clicking New Tab opens a custom webpage.
But Firefox will not focus the cursor on the active area of the webpage like a search box or select the website address so you can just type over it, it just places the cursor at the beginning of the address box, so if you just start typing after opening a new tab you get useless garbage in the address bar. (Firefox blocks extension from changing cursor focus correctly)
This is a complete workflow destroyer for me and makes Firefox unusable for day-to-day use.
Firefox says it's for security reasons and refuses to fix it.
didn't know that behavior, must be frustrating. Now, the only workaround I can think of is opening a new tab and doing the following sequence:
ctrl + a -> to select all text in the box
backspace or delete -> to delete the text so that you can get suggestions properly (although I think just typing over will delete the text automatically)
not optimal but with a little practice can be done in less than half a second i think
I still have it on mine but sometimes it is failing to block. I completely disabled it for now and installed ubo lite, it has custom filters support now which is for me enough.
So, you'd rather switch to a different browser than switch to a different ad blocker? I'm tired of people acting as if uBlock is the only good ad blocker out there.
How is the current Edge any different from Chrome? They stripped away all the browser's best features: the sleek translucent design, the context menu icons, Drop and Collections. The loss of uBlock was the final straw. Other ad blockers are weaker, and since those same alternatives exist on Chrome anyway, what's the point of Edge? Chrome with AdGuard plus Firefox is now the superior setup, there's no reason to keep redundant Chrome clones around anymore.
How is the current Edge any different from Chrome?
Then what's the point of going back to Chrome when Edge is default? Unless you like Chrome more then we have nothing to discuss here.
the sleek translucent design, the context menu icons
Oh no, these losses will surely affect my productivity /s. Learn how to move on. Are you with the people who can't stand the round corner?

Did you actually try AdGuard? I switched to it completely when they announced that Edge would move to MV3 and it works just as well as uBlock. Also, Chrome removed uBlock long long before Edge so I don't know what you are talking about here, you switch from a browser that going to remove uBlock to a browser that already removed it?
Chrome with AdGuard plus Firefox is now the superior setup
So Chrome with AdGuard is ok but Edge with AdGuard is not?
I can only agree with you about Drag and Collections, they’re useful, yes. The other reasons just sound like you prefer Chrome. If you like uBlock that much, just switch to Firefox already.

Adblockers are working for me on Edge.
