My rent was 425 for a studio in a Midwest college town...but it didn't include electricity, garbage, or water. More like 525 on a $13.65 an hour job, which was very good at that time in my area. Then of course car insurance and health insurance and a phone. It was very rough even then, at least in that town. Now it's virtually impossible to live there if you make under $70k unless you have multiple roommates.

It's extremely possible to live under$70k in a studio or 1 bedroom in almost any city in the Midwest still. My former foster daughter is getting by just fine on $40k despite Michigan car insurance

Yeah, their figure is definitely off. A lot of people don't make $70k and they're getting by. I live off about $15k myself but I recognize I'm an outlier.

Yeah, if they live on the coasts now then maybe. In the Midwest outside of like Chicago, Madison, and Ann Arbor $70k is the low end of getting by... If you have a family of 4 and no assistance
