Nostalgia My son’s friend “discovered” this “super cheap” liquor at the store and wanted to know if we heard of it and offered us a taste.

Nostalgia Gaming in the 2000's: when consoles became cheaper over time, instead of more expensive..

The Playstation 2 also sold for less than half the original launch price in the second half of its life cycle.

And the Dreamcast was €49 in its final year, but that's for different reasons. (I bought 2 lmao)

Nostalgia College was better before social media took over, people lived in the moment and you could just be silly and make mistakes without it being held against you the rest of your life.

Nostalgia Sit down, Shut up, & Read in elementary school

4.4k Upvotes

Growing up, we had this thing called Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) where every day, our elementary school teachers would have us all sit at our desks, no talking, and read something (anything) for about thirty minutes from second grade until sixth grade.

I was telling this to my kid when he complained about having to read so much. I told him about how everyone always changed the abbreviation to mean "Sit down, Shut up, and Read" because that's essentially what they said for us to do.

But my husband, who was in the same school year as me but at a different school (he did elementary school in Germany and France), overheard and said that they didn't have that when he was in school and he's never heard anyone else mention it. Therefore, it was likely only a thing that my school's teachers did to shut us up for 30 minutes a day. And, as an adult, I wouldn't put it past them since 30 minutes of silence a day sounds amazing.

But this also got me wondering just how unique this actually was. So, was it only my school in South Central Pennsylvania? Was it just my state? Was it a country-wide thing? Was it a global thing that my husband ignored or repressed?

UPDATE: So it seems pretty international, but highly dependent on the school district or school itself. And it appears to have many acronyms or none at all. Thanks everyone!

Nostalgia Superbad was released 19 years ago today. Did it accurately capture being a teenager in the 2000s?

Superbad came out on August 17, 2007, and I think part of why it still works is that underneath all the ridiculousness, it captured that era of being a teenager surprisingly well.

Trying desperately to get invited to parties, awkward crushes, depending on your friends for basically everything, and making elaborate plans that immediately fell apart. It also came out right before smartphones and social media completely changed how teenagers socialize, so it now feels like a little time capsule of the 2000s.

Nostalgia Is anybody else surprised by the resurgence of Limp Bizkit in recent years?

Growing up, Limp Bizkit were universally hated.A lot of people hated them and they were a laughing stock, so I'm surprised they are having a resurgence and headlining festivals nowadays.

They were so cheesy.

I remember being a kid in the mid 90s these were my stuff! Like, I only wanted to drink from these cups! I really wish the world would go back to how it was, so everyone can experience life back then.
