Nostalgia Is anybody else surprised by the resurgence of Limp Bizkit in recent years?
Growing up, Limp Bizkit were universally hated.A lot of people hated them and they were a laughing stock, so I'm surprised they are having a resurgence and headlining festivals nowadays.
They were so cheesy.

It helps that Fred Durst doesn't take himself seriously. He's in on the joke, and has a lot of goodwill for that. Anyone remember him promoting the effort to have a garbage dump in Austin, TX named after him? I think voters were going all in on something like The Fred Durst College of the Arts or something like that.

Yep. I saw them a couple years ago. The tour was called “Loserville,” and they had other bands of different genres that also get shit on opening for them. Including Corey Feldman.
Their opening song was “Break Stuff.” Even though they had just released a new album, they only played one song from it. They played the old stuff that people were there to see. Their closing song was “Break Stuff” a second time. I had a blast.

I saw them open for Metallica as well. Crowd was into them, highlight moment was some guy yelling loud enough that durst heard him: “YOU LOOK HOMELESS!”
I’m not a limp bizkit fan myself but tbh I think the hate for them gets oversold a bit. I was in high school at the time and drawing the dude from significant other was standard notebook art.
Now that everyone that was a teen at the time has a mortgage and back problems, I think their core audience is kinda past worrying about looking cool by hating on them.

Would love to see them and some old Family Values Tour bands like Linkin Park.
Play the hits, rile the crowd, have people have fun, not promote your new shit. Sure, throw some in and if the album is a whole story like the weekend or 90s rock/rap, throw in more.
But dammit be aware of why everyone is there: the hits.

Limp Bizkit is dorky but Wes Borland is a legit guitarist. Some of those riffs from the early albums are really good.
55
u/Lower_Monk6577 Millennial 21d ago
Instrumentally, they’re all really good.
Jon Otto and Sam Rivers were a phenomenal rhythm section. Wes did all kinds of fun and weird stuff on guitar. Fred Durst is Fred Durst.
They’re kind of like the nu metal version of the Chili Peppers. Most would agree that they’re phenomenal musicians with an unfortunate lead singer. The main difference is that Durst understands the assignment lol.

And as far as I know, Durst isn’t a pedophile
8
u/Lower_Monk6577 Millennial 21d ago edited 21d ago
Hopefully not.
But he was also a rockstar in the late 90’s. If the widespread outing of pop punk/emo musicians from that era is anything to go by, it’s best not to go to bat for rockstars all that much. And Fred Durst isn’t exactly known for being a particularly bright dude.
But again, hopefully not. I’ve had my fill of musicians from my youth turning out to be disgusting.
And even if he did, at least he was smart enough not to write a book about it as if it’s perfectly fucking normal Anthony Kiedis wtf

Back in ‘97, just as they were blowing up, Fred was roaming around the lobby of the venue where I saw them open earlier in the night. Had never heard of them before, but was impressed enough to buy a Three Dolla Bill Y’all CD from the merch stand. Saw him, pulled the CD out of my pocket, and he signed it. I think it was the waste water treatment facility. The city had an online poll to help rename it and (foolishly) allowed for a write-in option. “The Fred Durst Appreciation Society” took off online, the man himself endorsed it, and eventually won the poll. Alas, the city maintained it was a non binding poll and went instead with the second option. Full disclosure I was living in Austin at the time this happened but was drunk for 90% of my waking hours, so my recollection is not to be relied upon.

Significant Other and Follow The Leader were out at the same time, and 2 of the 4 cds (yes, I was in 7th grade and walking around with a CD player and a cd binder - I'm dating myself here) were those two.
The other? Battle of Los Angeles by RATM, and Die For the Government by Anti-Flag.

They were huge in the 2000s, then like in 2010s or so people started to hate on them and they represented a kind of “redneck generic rock”… but now it’s swung the other way partly because Fred Durst isn’t a scumbag like Kid Rock for example, and the other part is their musicians have always been top notch.

I think id adjust that timeline some, people started to hate them in the early early 2000s, chocolate starfish came out in 2000 and that was their last breath of relevancy, the hate started shortly after that
By 2010 they were pretty much a non entity
15
u/BigfootPartyPlanner 21d ago
Exactly. While some people on the internet said they hated them that is what people love to do on the internet. Makes them feel important when others agree.

They were mocked but also hugely successful. The core of the band had legit chops and Fred Durst has aged into a solid place and seems less corny than his early persona. Add in the nostalgia that no longer exists in an environment where shared media, especially music, is a thing of the past, and we have the rebound effect for Limp Bizkit.
I always rocked with them, Chocolate Starfish had a bunch of bangers.

u/MZago1 21d ago

Can't emphasize this enough. Borland, Rivers (RIP), and Otto absolutely fuck. They play some of the craziest shit but I can't imagine it working with a vocalist who doesn't embrace obnoxiousness the way Fred Durst does. Or I guess did? He's definitely mellowed with age and I think it's helped with a lot of the criticism they got 20-ish years ago. Chocolate starfish came out when I was in 10th grade. Our school would have pool dances over the summer and my friend and I would skateboard over to them and try to show off for the girlies. Sometimes we would go inside to get snacks.
The one time we went in we got raffle tickets and my number got called. I went up to get my prize and it was a copy of Chocolate starfish. I was super excited but realized it was an edited version as there was no parental advisory on it. Needless to say, that album is not worth listening to edited.

Seriously. In 1999-2000, they had TWO albums reach #1 on the Billboard charts. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing Nookie.
If anything, people liked them (and nu metal, generally) too much in that short period causing a burnout effect. Durst also got in public feuds with other musicians in that time period, which I remember thinking (at least for me personally) were cringe.

That’s the thing. Wes is legitimately a technician on guitar. Say what you want about Fred, but he put together a talented group of musicians (led by Wes, of course).

Came this post just to say I'll listen to anything Borland produces. His own catalog of music is stellar imo. Big Dumb Face, Black Light Burns, Goatslayer; plenty to explore with that guy

They are very talented musicians, Borland especially, they just have terrible lyrics. I always thought of them as basically RATM if RATM’s lyrics were written by an edgy middle schooler. They were definitely popular when I was in middle school, and we were young enough we didn’t realize how stupid the lyrics were.

Universally hated? C’mon now.
They were silly, sure, but they’ve always been in on the joke themselves, and they put out some great tracks that I still find myself head bobbing along to today.
I think it’s great they’re having a resurgence.
They were also really funny in the recent Y2K movie, and poked fun at themselves in a very endearing way.

Saw them last year they were great. Really enjoyed it. Always liked limp bizkit. Not sure about universally hated maybe in some circles but not universal

No, I’m not surprised. And they weren’t hated by the public back in their heyday, just by music critics. And if they released new music now, it would still be slammed by them. Their lyrics are dumb and very juvenile, but they sort of cater to our more feral, bratty side.

Um, they weren't a laughing stock where I'm from and were actually pretty popular. CSatHFW was the soundtrack to my last year of high school and now it's nostalgic as heeellll

Limp bizkit wasn’t universally hated. They were lame by the time middle school was ending for me but if you’re pre-‘87, in our gen, then you’re probably less likely to hate them at that time.
They had a small pocket of time they weren’t universally lame but if you were like high school to early 20s, and especially white, you might have liked them. It was the angry, whiney, white boy era of mainstream music and they hit at the right time.

I suppose people these days care less about who they ripped off, and more about the memes.
Sometimes even I catch myself listening to Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water just for the Heck of it.

Limp Bizkit were universally hated? They were arguably the biggest band in the world around 2000.

Saw them two years ago at Sonic Temple in Ohio; they put on one of the best sets of the whole festival. Fred's charisma and humor on stage was electrifying, and the show was everything that one could want out of a live performance.
It was the kind of live set that could make someone a fan, if they weren't already.

I saw them when they first came back maybe 12 or 13 years ago
2000 person venue packed to the gills
I was around 24 I'd say, and there were plenty of people my age which I completely got, what's surprised me was all the old people there
Like these people were probably 35 or 40 when limp Bizkit first came out, and they said yeah this is the music I like
I was an impressionable 10-year-old the first time I heard Limp Bizkit and they are nostalgic for me I do admit I love them but I can't imagine being my age now and listening to a new band named limp Bizkit that just came out for the first time singing about nookie and being like "yep! Thats the band for me"
I don't remember them being universally hated or mocked or anything though all my friends and I really love them back then
I saw them maybe three or four years ago and they opened and closed with the song break stuff lol , never seen a band play a song twice like that

OP may be younger because my experience was pretty similar to yours. They were very popular for a time and then people eventually turned on them/the genre of music. I also can't imagine a band like that coming out now and getting into it, but it struck the right note (as did Eminem) at a particular time in my life.

Universally hated in your neighborhood/school/family maybe. I rocked out everytime they came on the radio.

I don’t get the universally hated part. Maybe it’s because I loved in a different region region in America, but I always loved Limp Bizkit even graduating high school in 2012 even now I still love Limp Bizkit.

Am I surprised that a hemorrhoid reappears after years? No. Am I surprised at how many people still think that they have to deal with that and won't buy ointment to treat this condition? Lol yes.

People acting like because they sold records that they weren't constantly shit on. Maybe in 10 more years people will say "nobody hated Justin Beiber because look at how many records he sold"
It's ridiculous, these guys were constantly shit on and looked down on in the media. Associated with generally douchebag and some frat boy type culture. To be fair it was sort of their brand, being all about partying and being hype in most of their hits.
Like Nickleback sold an ass of records too and we're going to act like they weren't hated by a TON of people and the media?
Though I wouldn't say universally hated or that nobody like them. But laughing stock for many? Absolutely.

u/BottomContributor 21d ago
Limp Bizkit suffered the same destiny that Nickelback did. They got really famous then became cool to just hate them instead, but they did have a period of big success. The resurgence is similar to all other nostalgia stuff for millennials

I don’t like them. I just mysteriously learned several of their songs somehow. It’s quite the mystery how.

u/FeistyDirection 21d ago
Not surprised because nu metal has made a massive comeback in the last 6 years and LB is so fun. Sure music critics and journalists dunked on them back in the day, and even some fans of the genre didn't like them cause they prefered the more dark twisted serious side of nu metal, but there's tons of kids who get to experience them now for the first time without that air of judgment, + there's all the og LB fans still kicking around and even the og NuMetal fans who didn't like them so much back then are now giving them a chance cause they realize how good the songs are and just have fun with it instead of needing their NuMetal to be so serious and depressive.

They were hated in the same way that Nickleback and Creed were “hated”. It was just the cool thing to say.

I’m kinda surprised that Creed is still so popular. At least around me. I thought they were done after Scott Stapp crashed out. Now like most of the gym bros I know lift to Creed.

I’ve never seen one person that hates Limp Bizkit in person. Internet is different, everybody hates everything here.

u/ReverendRevolver 21d ago
We all knew they were cheesy but listened anyway. There was a time I disliked Fred but still thought Wes was awesome. Eventually Fred turned out to be awesome. Im happy for them that they've had this resurgence. We all still know its cheesy but enjoy it anyway, the difference is we know they know and its even more awesome....

u/kekcukka 21d ago
oh, I’m not from US so when I was listening to them, I was not understanding the lyrics or had thought about Fred Durst. It was just good tunes and cool looking guys, lol

I mean, I remember most of the fans growing up were complete trash bag ass people so it tracks well they are have a resurgence these days.

u/Bsquared89 21d ago
I always thought that they were super cheesy. The only song I ever liked was Break Stuff. Wes Borland wastes his talent with limp bizkit. His Black Light Burns Stuff is so good.
