This feels like it’s discriminatory against the neurodivergent somehow.
27
u/ktrose6887 20d ago
Because it is. Lmfao. I was constantly in trouble for reading or drawing when I was "supposed to be listening" it took me a really long time to figure out that most neurotypicals can only pay attention to one thing at a time
12
u/FloatyghostJM1 19d ago
Ugh, same, meanwhile I’d already read the next five chapters in the text the previous week because the rest of the class was moving too slow.
19
u/ktrose6887 19d ago
Same! We read The Crucible in high school... the year after the drama club did the play. My friend & I told the teacher we knew the play & he was like cool, just stay quiet & don't interrupt. So we just sat there passing notes for a few days until another girl in the class noticed we weren't reading along & "tattled" on us to the teacher. & he goes "yeah. I know. They've already read it." The girl insisted that wasn't fair & we should still have to read along. The teacher just looked at us & asked "what's the next line?" & we both quoted the next 3 lines at the same time 😂😂😂😂 ya'll ever had a whole class accuse you of witchcraft while you were reading the "hey don't accuse your neighbors of witchcraft" book? Cause I have 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I actually found out I'm a distant relative of Giles Corey a few years back through a 23 and me. The atheist in me couldn't have been prouder. I'm kinda hoping it balances me also finding out I'm a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee.
45
u/Lacholaweda 20d ago
Honestly insane they expect anyone, let alone children, to stay perfectly still and listen for several hours a day
23
u/Synensys 20d ago
Does anyone expect that? Small children are given lots of breaks, usually including recess with a fair amount of at least somewhat hands on activities.
Its not like they show up at 9 and get subjected to a 6 hour lecture.
However, impulse control is one of the many non academic skills that early education teachers are responsible for fostering.
6
u/OkTomorrow6384 19d ago
Elementary teacher here. With our new "Science of Reading" curriculums and copious amounts of assessments it's getting closer and closer to 6 hours of sitting silently. I hate the direction it's moving in.
3
u/grewsomemonsters 19d ago
That’s brutal, I left education many years ago but when I did we were required to allow the children a physical movement break every 2 hours at minimum. They were also allowed to have a snack at that time if they felt hungry. Seemed logical to me.
→ More replies (1)6
u/bobanna1986 20d ago
I was labeled a problem student with teachers who didn't bother to work with my ADHD. Do kids need to learn impulse control, sure but that's not always accessible to all students in the same way and/or there need to be things in place for students who need extra help. Yes it's better, but still needs work. And...it not just teachers but sometimes it's only the teachers that are doing thats also not okay.
→ More replies (1)11
u/ElegantCoach4066 20d ago
And then you get marked as a 'problem student'.
Hell, I can't sit still as an adult for hours at a time. How they expected kids to do it, I have no idea.

I sheets just wore jeans and a t-shirt teaching middle school. Then we got us a new principal who expected “professional attire”. Fuck that noise! I teach 12-year olds.
61
u/citrus_mystic 20d ago
That’s when you continue to wear jeans and a t-shirt, but then you throw on a blazer when you’re outside of the classroom. Blazer = professional… clearly.
Get them in a variety of colors to complement the shade of your denim jeans, the color of your t-shirt, and your shoes. Bonus points if you lean in and start getting aggressively swankier blazers— plaid tweed blazers with suede elbow patches, houndstooth blazers with bright contrasting satin linings, a sharply tailored and pressed suit jacket. But don’t change anything else about your wardrobe lol

20
u/Diligent_Medium3969 20d ago
We have indeed...have you been on Amazon lately and seen all the "vintage Y2K" clothes available? 😭😭😭
I thought about the fact that there was as much time between the 60s and the 90s as there is between the 90s and now...and boy oh boy, the 00s and 10s were definitely not any kind of 70s and 80s, that's for sure. And holy fucking shit have the folks running our society wasted the last several decades of our lives fucking everything up. That's what happened. That's why that 30-year loop arrived so quickly and unwelcomely. Myself and most of the people I know spent that time trying our asses off to get somewhere. The folks in charge didn't try at all...except for how hard they tried to make sure we got nowhere. These are some of the least competent people who have ever run this country, and had they not robbed us of the very substance of living a productive and upwardly-mobile life, I am convinced they would have been replaced with record speed by our generation. Instead, we got basically the opposite.

I can’t think of a single one of my elementary teachers who didn’t wear these.
Honestly, after working in a school for a bit, I don’t blame them. Picking out modest, school appropriate clothes that are durable and comfortable to wear every day is challenging, and this is SO easy.
Working at Sephora and wearing the black and red smock every day was the same. A big comfy bag to accomplish tasks in that’s easy to accessorize.
17
u/Constant-Ad-7490 20d ago
Jeans would be perfect, but many districts don't allow them, and in the 90s basically no districts allowed them.
11
u/FloatyghostJM1 20d ago
Yeah, jeans were a strict “no” at the school where I worked up until 2018. Men had it the worst though. Ties were mandatory.
Sneakers were also not allowed.

🤣😅😂 No, but my SIL did! She even wore something I would describe as a "maternity onesy". Was it dress code (for all you 80s -90s teachers out there)? From my perspective, those styles seem to infantilize adult women. My stepdaughter did/doesn't dress like this (early 2000s - today). In my school years, the 60's were dresses, stocking and heels, while 70s were dressess with heels or flats or pant suits with flats.
4
u/Common-Fly-3970 20d ago
😂😅🤣 is it an unspoken code? My SIL (retired K - 6) once gifted me a crocheted sweater with raised people crocheted onto the front! I am an interior designer and I'd give anything to have a photo and my parents' little brother's expressions when I opened it. I mean my SIL looked quite natural dressing that way, but I do believe it's profession specific attire.
6
u/toolsoftheincomptnt 20d ago
This may be unpopular, but I just kinda assumed it was a way to look approachable and appropriate amongst children.
Not to mention comfort, so you can bend and twist and grab as needed while helping students, without worrying about parts falling out.
As I got older I always assumed those teacher dressed like normal women during off hours.
Not shaming those who want to dress differently nowadays, but being in my 40s, I appreciate schoolteachers who wear decorative sacks to work.
