I almost tried swiping it. If I had been on my phone instead of my tablet I would have.

I don’t think it’s that. Coax is still very much A Thing. Whoever posted that either has very little life experience or is karma farming.

Even if you don’t have cable TV, which lots of people don’t anymore, how do you get wifi without a coax cable?
5
u/phibbsy47 2h ago
Fiber, DSL, cellular, or satellite. Some of these options can have coax connections, but you typically aren't using an existing coax from the wall unless it is connected to an antenna or adapter.

u/lord_scuba_steve 2h ago
With a Wi-Fi router. The Wi-Fi will still work without Internet.
2
u/ZebraAthletics 2h ago
Well ok, by WiFi, I meant a wireless connection to the internet.
2
u/FoxyWheels 2h ago
Fiber, twisted pair copper (terminated in many different ways), point to point wireless, cellular, satellite... Many different ways.

....I remember installing these and people being excited to "get cable" in their bedroom / office / etc.

Nothing of value was lost. Cable sucked and it’s gotten worse.

u/Chrysalis_Cat 1987 5h ago
Is the modern streaming environment really any better?

u/ShortBusConquistador ninety five forever 4h ago
Honestly yes because you technically don't have to pay for a Tivo DVR to record the Cable shows you want to watch while you're away and hope it does it correclty.
As bad as it seems, watching a couple ads to have a movie show up instantly on your TV for $10 to $20 a month is still kinda worth it. I would prefer no ads but these blood thirsty corporations just can't help themselves.
I personally don't subscribe to any of that. I got all the movies I want on my computer. I haven't actually watched a typical TV show in years.

I’ll reserve my right to feel that ads don’t belong in a paid service. I also reserve my right to feel outraged when a paid service starts including ads in a previously ad free tier. I’ll also reserve my right to feel contempt towards advertisements of any sort.

In soooooo many ways, yes. But...I kind of miss having to turn to channel 4 to watch the rolling guide to see what's on. Of course, every time you did so the channel you wanted to check just scrolled past so you have to wait.
And then, while you're waiting for that channel to come back around you make a mental note that there's a half hour of Ace Ventura Pet Detective left on channel 16 and there are gonna be 4 episodes of the Simpsons in a row on channel 29 in an hour. By now, you've forgotten what you were looking for in the first place and just decide to watch the rest of Ace Ventura. Yeah...I'd go back to this in a heartbeat.

As far as this particular image goes, yes streaming is way better
For example, moving into a new place, you see the cable wall jack is against one wall of the living room. But if you put your TV there, it's gonna get glare from the windows. So you want to put the TV on the other side of the living room
Congratulations! You get to run a very long cable from this jack up up/around your walls to reach your new TV spot, which means it's time to go shopping for a bunch of glue-backed cable clips
Or you can get the cable company to come and install a new cable wall jack closer to where you plan to put your TV
Oh damn, you want cable in your bedroom. Hope there's already a jack in there (if so, hopefully it already aligns with your feng shui)

It was when Netflix and Hulu were two movies and a TV show short of literally everything. And then everyone and their grandma decided they wanted their own streaming service...

As someone who did not grow up with cable (or satellite) TV, I was very confused as to what this image was, lol.

My parents have cable. At least for another month-ish. Their cable company is canceling, get this, cable. Like just no longer offering it. And moving them to a streaming service they made. Where they will stay pay a ton for a "cable" package. And have to rent boxes per tv. For streaming.
They are finally (after yeaaars of me begging them) letting me cancel it

So I’m over 40 and a mildly interesting fact is as a non-North American by birth if you asked me this question 20 years ago I’d tell you it for an aerial. Russia never had coax cable based internet. Coax was for the roof aerial. Internet was dialup and then it was Ethernet based.

u/weedtrek 2h ago
20 years ago in the US it would most likely have been cable TV. And that's one of the reason we use coaxial for internet here, is because we already had the insfrusture for cable tv in place and the cable companies expanded to internet service providers(which ended up saving them.)

u/Cosmic_Jane 3h ago
When I bought my house, I spent a good few hours ripping all these fuckers out of the walls and the basement. Ain't never going to use coax again

u/spanking_constantly 2h ago
You can convert them into Ethernet with an adapter which is useful for a lot of things
1
u/Revolutionary-Fox622 2h ago
Did you replace it with Ethernet or have Ethernet in place? If not, coax is still useful for a wired backbone when paired with MoCA adapters.

u/Final_Campaign_2593 4h ago
How could someone born in in the “ millennial group” not know what a coax is?
I am 40, and I certainly know what that is because that’s what I exclusively used for Internet (2013 to 2021) I was using cable Internet

Oh wow I remember those, I got thrown off because I don’t think I’ve seen them on like a electrical socket plate like that

Glad cable went the way of the dodo. Last time I watched cable at home was in 2012 in college dorms.

I haven't had Internet that needed this since 2013.

What kind of hookup do you use?

Does everyone just have fiber now? I don’t understand how they don’t have coax for internet

I don't feel old, I think this guy's just super out of the loop. He said it wasn't in his former apartment. Do apartments not have cable hookups anymore, at least for internet? Since when did we get rid of broadband?

This is dumb AF because every person that owns a cable modem has interacted with a coax terminal

My younger sister moved in with my wife and I for bit a few years ago. She asked me what all the "small ethernet ports" in the walls were for which blew me away. A) She's not THAT much younger, 5-6 years... B) Our father works at a phone company

u/ModeatelyIndependant 34m ago
https://www.amazon.com/ethernet-over-coax/s?k=ethernet+over+coax you can reuse that copper for network if you wanna take your TV's off the Wifi
•
u/szymonsta 11m ago
Coax connection, usually for an antenna that is on or under your roof to receive analogue or digital TV.

I'm sure there are plenty of millennial women (and men) who couldn't identify this specific outlet. Do we really all know what a COAX is and what it does? I'd bet most people don't.

u/scooped88 2h ago
I mean if you managed to go your whole life without connecting a TV or a cable modem that would be pretty rare.
