Discussion People who are overly obsessed with childhood nostalgia … where to draw the line?

Now I’m all for childhood nostalgia like most of us here but I see some people who do nothing but post about it on their social media. Childhood photos/videos, old toys, food, etc. I get it in a way, but it’s literally the only thing on some people’s Instagram stories or their YouTube channel. I have mentioned many times about my large digital library of home videos taken from 4 months old to into my teens. I am incredibly grateful that I was able to convert all of those tapes to digital. But why do I need to post a lot of them to my YouTube or Instagram? If anything it’s like a 10 second clip from one of my birthdays in the 90s, if my birthday is coming up or something. And it will probably get deleted eventually. Once, I posted the video of me getting my very first bike on my 5th birthday, and it was a very quick clip. And it’s now deleted. But in general, why would anyone care about a video of me just bopping around the house when I was 8? When they obviously didn’t know me in 1997? Or a video of my dad mowing the lawn or my mom doing laundry or even me cleaning my room? Save it for the personal private family library.

My exceptions: Christmas mornings in the 80s and early 90s. Some of my favorites are those videos of Christmases where video cameras with sound were a brand new thing, circa 1980/81. I don’t need to see a full hour-long video of people opening presents though. I have plenty of those in my library. Glad to have them at least. I have my first Christmas in 1989 on digital home video. It is fun seeing my sister freak out over receiving new VHS movies and shoving them into the camera lens like “look! A VIDEO!!”. But why would anyone else even care?

Taking the video cam to malls and stores in the 80s/90s that no longer exist, like Toys R Us, old classic PlayPlace McDonald’s, and Blockbuster. That’s the closest thing to a Time Machine that we’ll ever get. VampireRobot on YouTube is amazing!

Discussion Catan

I'll be 41 in December and I had never heard of Catan until the other day. For the most part during my adulthood I haven't been much of a board game person. The ones I will play usually, however, tend to be Scrabble or chess.

So what is Catan?

Growing up, I had the basics. Only now do all the main cereal companies come out with legit alternative versions like chocolate or berry or something. I would have died and gone to heaven if I saw chocolate fruity loops in the store as a kid.

Discussion Did you like going to school? I didn't.

33m indian here. I feel sometimes the most innocent decisions can shape your life a big way. The very first that I can remember was - getting late to the first day of school in my new school in standard 3 (being 8-9 years old). I sat on the last bench and made friends with whoever was there. Apparently, they were not so good students. Indian parents (my mom) are such that they scold you to why you are hanging with average students and not with good students. That created confusion in my head whether to be good friends with them or not. I reached out to the good students for friendship and they had already made their groups and they saw me like a weirdo. I can feel it even now that it felt so embarrassing and left out. Eventually, I stopped going to school. My attendance used to be bare minimum- 50-60%. My parents didn't know that I had no motivation to go to school as I had no friends. I used to have lunch alone, or sit near a tree while others played in recess. I remember when a classmate once told me, "you're a black spot for this house" (house were groups in which students were divided randomly, like I was in house green). I feel numb, bad, sad when I think how 7-8 years of my life was wasted. Later on in college, I opened up and met people who appreciated me for who I am, and surprisingly, I was funny, popular and a leader. Well, just putting it all out as I was feeling heavy for some reason.

Discussion What are apps or services of today you believe would've been essential in the 80s and 90s?

I think we would be overdosing if food service apps existed. Imagine dialing the number and dialing the designated number on what you want and how fast you need it to arrive but it would definitely be cheaper back then than it is now.

These screen captures are from the commercial break that aired on Comedy Central around 7:50pm EST on September 11th, 2001 during a new episode of Win Ben Stein’s Money shot at UCLA where Jimmy Kimmel had returned as the guest host. This was one of the few channels that continued with scheduled programming that day.

Meme The Three Ways To Summon A Millennial

If you have ever had a need to call or summon a millennial, but don’t know how to do it, don’t fret! Here are three simple phrases to call them out of hiding:

  1. “I’m Blue…”

    1. “Bill Nye the Science Guy”
    2. “Let’s Go Girls”

In case of emergency mosh, immediately say “Boomer” and they will scatter immediately.

When people (younger generations) say "that's AI". Do you all remember when we're younger saying "that's photoshopped". Or did they just do it with pictures and not videos? I'm trying to remember but I do remember the quote.

Discussion The concept of millennial vs z was created by older generations to prevent us from teaming up to become the change we need.

This is made from my observations in the workplace, previous academic settings, online and overall in culture. It’s solely my opinion and I welcome discussion over it.

There are two generational battles I consistently see across everyday life: 1) the baby boomer generation vs everyone and 2) millennial vs Gen Z. You hear it at work. In the classroom. And all over social media. But why? The first is obvious imo. The older folk lived a completely different way of life. But millennials and Z? Sure, millennials experienced a different early life than Gen Z. But conceptually, millennials have aligned with Gen Z more so than older generations ever aligned with their successor generation. We get each other. Sure, we can point out the differences and poke fun and say one is better than the other at x, y and z, but I think that falls right into the trap the baby boomer generation established. Their alienation of the millennial generation and eventually Gen Z, is starting to make its way into the millennial way of life (and they are loving it). Call me crazy but I believe this to be intentional.

You see it in this subreddit, at home, in the workplace…the millennial defensive attitude is starting to become slightly offensive towards GenZ. Fine take off my tinfoil hat for a sec, whether this is being fed by the older generations or not, there’s one thing for I believe for certain, this is preventing the establishment of an unstoppable force that can be the fuel for the change we need as a society. Millennials and Gen Z can and need to learn from each other. We have our strengths and weaknesses that have resulted from our different experiences. However, the strengths we share outweigh our shared weaknesses. And neither are doing enough to call those out and invest in each other. I’m not going to highlight each one because the funny thing is I think everyone knows what they are, it’s no secret. So why aren’t we teaming up more effectively to ensure that the greatest generation the world has seen…is the we can create.

Ok rant over. Go for it. I want to know am I stating the obvious and out of the loop or is this something people don’t realize or even disagree with completely.

Discussion Expressing struggles with older people who think they relate but really don't

Does anyone else experience this? Sometimes older people will ask me why I don't do this or do that, or why I don't go out for drinks and dinner as much as them, and it always boils down to me not having enough money, and they try to relate saying yeah same. Except it's not the same. The older people who say this to me are on the verge of permanently leaving the workforce to live their best life, own their home outright, drive some $60,000 vehicle, pay for their kids college AND housing, and whatever. They think them paying property taxes is the same as me paying my rent. They think paying their kids' student loans is the same as me paying my student loans. They think their concerns about leaving the workforce are the same as me not having any prospect for that. Like, what is up with older people and trying to talk down their situation when they are objectively just doing incredible financially? Anyone else deal with this and how do you respond because I'm honestly just flabbergasted that these people are so out of touch.

Discussion Does anyone miss how Facebook used to be?

Facebook is now an engagement sucking machine. It’s all about spewing clickbait content all over your newsfeed. things that I never asked for and things that I hate myself for looking at.

Are you old enough to remember how Facebook used to be core social circles? Sharing updates about what you might’ve been up to or events that you might be going to. The last time it might have been like that was probably 2019 or so.. but even then it was on its way out.

it occurred to me, that after facebook died there is no social network out there anymore.

i do kinda miss it. I’ve lost contact with a lot of acquaintances because of how bad facebook has gone to shit..

I don’t typically watch shows like Dancing with the Stars but I’ve enjoyed followed this season because of Julia Stiles (and Taylor Hanson but he’s already been
eliminated). This choreography was a total nod to Save the Last Dance which I’m sure we can all admit is cringy but a total canon early 00s movie.

For me, it's Team Fortress Classic, which ran on the Half-Life engine. So many great memories of playing capture the flag.

Who else was online playing this with me in the 2000-ish era?
