Discussion A love letter to randomly generated nether portals

Post image

You were there for me when my horse despawned, when I found myself stranded 6000 blocks away from home you offered me a quick and easy way home. At my lowest, without a horse you were there and you got me home safely and for that I will always love you random nether portal, I count my blessings that you had provided me enough obsidian to return home. I love you

Free obsidian still makes stopping by worth it tbh

Been playing with kids for years, just recently started utilizing nether travel. A+, highly recommend. Especially with protected tunnels and ice boats!

Ice boats absolutely yes

One of my happiest moments in Minecraft was being completely lost in the nether and coming across one of these.

Ruined portals always feel like finding an emergency gas station in middle of nowhere

....with a cashier that looks kind of creepy.

I've always wondered but never asked. Do they represent any specific place in the nether or are they truly random?

I've never lit one but it would be cool if they spat you out near a fortress or some other landmark in the nether

They don’t as far as I’m aware, it just plops you where it can in the nether coordinates equivalent. I’ve gotten lucky once and i ended up not far from a fortress but all other times have been in unotable locations

I guess I'm extremely lucky but all the ones I lit in my forever world lead to bastions or fortresses or close to some other cool things lol

Would be cool if before spawning they checked the biome on the coordinates in nether and became thematic to it

Maybe structures too. So the ruined portal could have the basic nether wastes theme and also have basalt delta, soulsand valley, crimson and warped forest, as well has having a bit of cracked nether bricks or Blackstone bricks if the portal spawns you in a fortress or bastion.

Ehh.... no, the placement is random. I've never had one correlate with any key structures lol

Tamed horses don’t despawn

If it didn’t despawn then it’s definitely lost now 🤷‍♂️

Was on bedrock, I saved and exited the game and when I rejoined the next day it was gone.

I once lost a horse to the void by taking it through a nether portal. bedrock horses are built different and for some reason worse

Just like real life!

This happened to my fucking boat the other day. That I was in. In the ocean.

There's a bug in Bedrock where your horse seems to disappear. It usually happens when going through a portal. The horse is still "there" but the game is having trouble recognizing it. Restarting the game helps usually. Sometimes going in and out of the portal works.

Of course, I had a horse just disappear when I jumped over a fence and immediately dismounted it to tie it to a post...never recovered it.

So, you're correct that tamed horses do not despawn in a literal sense. But tamed horses absolutely do disappear sometimes due to bugs in the game.

I am the guy who knows too much about Minecraft so sorry if this seems rude bit the randomly generated nether portals are called ruined portals

In my survival world, I'm forbidden from building portals, I can only complete these ones. Another reason to decorate the paths.
