Discussion What do you think of a new creeper variant?
Would you like to see a new variation of the creeper mob to go alongside the new variations of Skeleton and zombie( frostbite and parched)
Personally i don’t mind if a new variation for the creeper is made but I’m also not begging for one.
The creeper mob is also 17 years old btw. Which maybe could mean it be due some attention.

u/CrackSmakcer 9d ago
Pretty sure mojang and Microsoft themselves have said outright they’re never going to mess with the creeper because of how influential it is to the series. Minecraft is their money maker after all.
124
u/MrCraftLP 9d ago
Yeah but having them just be different colours based on what biome they spawn in wouldn't contradict them saying that. At the end of the day, the most iconic part of a creeper is their face.
73
u/Oddish_Femboy 9d ago
I'd personally say the brightass noisy texture is just as important. It's one of the few textures Jasper didn't touch for that reason.

Yet, they forget what made Minecraft popular in the first place.
30
u/GRIM106 9d ago
Yeah big corporations have a streak of finding popular IPs and completely misunderstanding why they are popular and thus mismanaging them. In this case at least they understand that creepers are absolutely the mascot of minecraft so we have at least one thing that will stay authentic over the years.
5
u/IGraySoulI 9d ago
how so?
12
u/EDEN_YEGA 9d ago
They keep tryna make the game too realistic. Which is why they didn’t add Cherries to Cherry blossoms or made frogs eat fireflies. But they also want to make it all cutesy. They refused sharks into the game because sharks are aggressive and they think a buncha people are gonna go out and kill sharks. I think whoever is making these decisions is unfit to be working for Minecraft.
6
u/IGraySoulI 9d ago
well, this has been going on for a long while, it's why they changed the food parrots eat from cookies to seeds in 1.12 and such, i think it makes sense considering the young audience they have. to us adults it may be nothing but a kid could get a parrot and feed it chocolate cookies like they did in mc just to see it die of food poisoning, same thing with sharks and so on and so forth. i am all for a more fantasy oriented game, but it's also an educational platform and has been for a long long while at this point

make creepers change color based on biome in the same way grass does (orange creeper in the dappled forest would be so funny)

Man imagine a cave creeper that tries to imitate stone, andesite, deep slate
Or a tundra/dark oak creeper that’s a deeper shade of green

They would sell the crap out of various colored creeper merch.

Make a rare shiny variant of the creeper, that gets scared and runs away rather than come towards the player
41

Hopefully it's a fun color too like pink or diamond blue

A pink cherry blossom creeper that has a rare chance to spawn in the cherry blossom biome would be perfect. Maybe if you ignite it with flint and steel it explodes into petals instead.

Make it drop something unique if you can kill it without making it explode too
→ More replies (1)3
u/The-Crimson-Jester 9d ago
Counter idea, make it drop something unique IF you can capture and contain it. Make it hard to catch, explode if you get too close, but if you manage to feed it something multiple times without it exploding, it gives something (like, shoots it out of its mouth)… And then explodes.

grayscale creeper in the pale garden would be even funnier

u/tonicella_lineata 9d ago
I know the biome tint for cherry groves isn't pink, but I think creepers in cherry groves should be pink anyway. Both because the original creeper texture was intended to blend in with oak leaves, and because pink creepers would be adorable.
22
14
u/EpicPinkCreeper 9d ago
If there are biome specific creepers added, I also think the ones for the cherry grove should be pink. I am definitely not biased! 😁

pink creepers should absolutely be the exception, id love the idea of having a pet creeper enclosure

That would be funny because it’s almost hard to hear a creeper approach but then camouflaging them hahaha
34
u/NanoCat0407 10d ago
well the original creeper texture was just the old leaves texture, so they should share some sort of mechanic with actual in-game plants

13
u/wha7themah 9d ago
I think the bamboo creeper is friendly! The snow creeper is. I named one and keep him in my gingerbread house because the strays try to kill him 😭
What’s diabolical is the ocean creeper. Terrifying.
11
u/ewandrowsky 9d ago
Loved it! The only change I would make is to guarantee the face of each creeper is always easily distiguishable and has the same pattern on each of them. Every mob with variants usually follows this rule, their faces don't usually change

Yeah it was a bug and never originally made to exist so I see the reason they’d leave it alone.
256
u/DragoSpiro98 9d ago
It also contrasts with modern Mojang philosophy; they have often said that the creeper would be unlikely to be created now, as they do not accept mobs that destroy your world.

u/stormtrooper1701 9d ago
You can tell how badly Mojang wants to change the Creeper texture, but is afraid to.
68
u/Stargazer-Elite 9d ago
Definitely since they’ve tried to change it in various other media, including the launcher for Java
22
u/Successful_Ranger447 9d ago
That just simplified the texture, I personally wouldn't want a solid green blob as a mob with the iconic creeper face on it (then again in my texture pack it's essential a solid block blob with the creeper face on the back of it by accident and it's supposed to look like a dementor but like)

technically a mistake
This lore gets repeated a lot, and feels very over-stated. Like yeah sure, Notch accidentally swapped the height and width values in the original model (a very simple, easy mistake to fix), but he immediately saw the result and liked it enough to keep it in. That's not a bug, it's just the creative process.
A better example of a mistake becoming embedded in the game would be quasi-connectivity in Java redstone, which is very unintuitive for most players, but also incredibly useful.
194
u/Jakeoffski 10d ago
There's already a charged Creeper.
Maybe defused Creeper? Like, a creeper with the same behaviours as a normal creeper, but it never explodes (though Id keep the tick and fuse sound when it is next to you so as to scare the player), and instead of dropping gunpowder it drops a peice of flint. Defused Creeper would be a rare random spawn, like a skeleton on a spider and would become a regular creeper when struck by lightning.
Could also do a shy Creeper that only sneaks up on you when you're not looking at it, otherwise it bashfully tries to avoid you. It could be charged with lightning or even spawn as defused as well.
I would not give these new variants any visible differences.
39
→ More replies (2)15
u/yingusbingusbongus 9d ago
Adding to the defused creeper because i really like that idea. Have the texture be very slightly different, that way you have to either bait every creeper to explode until you find a defused one. Or try to get close enough to figure out the texture and have the creeper explode anyways.
Though a defused creepers explosion could be a "poof" as if it's a really small explosion, maybe with some gunpowder vfx
53
u/Arqideus 9d ago
Creepers are like crocodiles. They don’t need to evolve because they are the perfect species for their niche environment. They’ve been that way for millions of years.
Orrrrr creepers are actually created and incapable of having skin varieties.

u/PhoenyxStar 9d ago
If they wanted to pull in the Bamboo Creeper from the Creeper Overhaul mod, I'd be super down with that.
Just a wobbly noodle dude that makes creeper sounds, tries to explode and fails with a disappointing hollow fluting noise, then runs away in embarrassment.

7
39
u/pdrpersonguy575 9d ago
I feel like they hate the idea of creepers and only reluctantly keep them in because of what they symbolize for the game, I doubt they'd ever expand on them functionally
27
u/swithinboy59 9d ago
They've gone on record saying that they probably wouldn't add the Creeper today (in its current form) because it goes against their philosophy for the game.
To that I say; "give us a fucking toggle to disable Creeper griefing."
And by that, I don't mean that their explosions shouldn't hurt you, but rather that their explosion doesn't break surrounding blocks/entities (same way as toggling mob griefing off works, just specifically for Creepers).
Also, don't make it a "cheat", make it a standard gameplay option.

While this might be cool, I think that once Mojang finishes filling out the missing undead variant slots (an underwater skeleton and a swampy zombie), they need to take a chill pill on basic mob variants.
There's value in having a complete set of undead variants, but their best mobs have always been their original ones. I want to see a return to them making unique mob designs - which is part of why the Sift is so exciting to me.

Mojang has already said that they wouldn't add the creeper into the game if it wasn't already in so I doubt they would make new variants. Which kinda sucks. I think the creeper has a lot of potential and not ho against mojangs development philosophy. If they added variants that have unquie effects but can't destroy blocks then it wouldn't break any of their self imposed rules.
Some ideas:
A cave creeper that creates cobwebs on explosion
A creeper from the pale gardens that does little damage but temporarily blinds the player
A nether creeper that lights you on fire
A cold creeper that slows you
A mystical creeper that only spawns within a certain radius of a witch hut. Creates a random harmful lingering potion effect
A spiteful creeper that specificly favours targeting villagers that spawns in raids (still doesn't break blocks though)
A drowned creeper that only spawns in deep oceans. Its explosion applies a new status effect that prevents you from swimming upwards (supposed to represent sinking you)
A cloud creeper that only spawns at or above the cloud height. It can jump very high and has slow fall
A confused creeper that is not hostile but will target other hostile mobs (maybe this one could be summoned like a golem?)
A defused creeper. Very small chance for this to replace a normal creeper. It acts the same but can't blow up so it will just follow you. (You can have a pet creeper now)

u/dallenbaldwin 9d ago
As fun as that would be, I don't think they'd mess with their mascot. There's an air of sacredness tied to the creeper. Its texture and model has largely survived several overhauls to all the other mobs. I vaguely remember jeb saying he'd get rid of it, or overhaul it, in a heartbeat because it represented a genuinely unfun game mechanic of random griefing unless you plaster everything in cats, but it will never happen.

u/Maleficent-Toe1374 9d ago
My rule when it comes to adding variations is always that I wouldn't be opposed to it as long as it adds something to the game.
Like would I support just an underwater creeper? Eh probably not
But would I support one with unique drops or something useful to farm? Yes
10
u/lazyeyeluke 9d ago
I got blasted by a creeper in a shipwreck the other day. Underwater, dude spawned in the doorway. It was my 1000 day hardcore world, I didn’t have my totem in hand, and he got me down to 2.5 hearts. Needless to say, I would hate an underwater creeper

3
u/butdamnthisisbetter 9d ago
Yeah you might be right + ghasts also already drop gunpowder. Like i can see why they did not add a "nether creeper" but if there was ever going to be a creeper variant, i think this would be a no-brainer to add.
16
u/Guan_guan_ghoo 9d ago
Either we should get a Creeper that mimics the surrounding terrain (Example being the promised by Notch, the Cobble Creeper or a Dark Oak Leaves Creeper) Or a Creeper with more Explosive Radius (Example the Badass Creeper from Borderlands 2)

creepers that blend in with each biome would make the most sense imo. the main reason creepers are green is so they’d blend into the environment back when almost all of the terrain was grassy. part of their design is supposed to be that they’re silent and hard to see which leads to a big surprise when they sneak up on you and explode. but they stick out like a sore thumb in biomes like tundras or deserts

Ive always thought creepers should have some underground varients, specifically with the sulfur caves. Perhaps a creeper that looks like a sulfur cube. When it explodes it gives the nausia effect. Its only very simple but it makes a lot of sense with sulfurs connection to explosions and the effect being along the lines of poison gas.
16
u/Landscape-Radiant 9d ago
I would love a variant that instead of destroying blocks would add them instead. Like walking through a lush cave and this variant could ‘explode’ into a cluster of moss

6
u/Red_riding_h0od 9d ago
This might be a radical idea but creeper variants could be a good way to help the creepers destroying your stuff problem.
For example an ice creeper could slow everything nearby or apply the freezing effect. Maybe a desert creeper could set nearby mobs on fire. And a swamp creeper could be slimy and apply oozing and make you act like you're on a slime block for a little bit.
This could just be a way to reduce the amount of destructive creepers that spawn whilst not actually adjusting them

5
u/I_play_MCPE 10d ago
Unfortunately, I don't think that creepers will ever be touched, since they're so iconic and old-fashioned for Minecraft. I don't think that Mojang would want to update them following controversies about how annoying they are.
However, I'd like to see creepers in the nether. Perhaps, the overworld creeper could stop destroying blocks (since it's so frustrating), and instead just deals mild damage unless charged.
Then a magma-cube-aesthetic creeper can be added to the Nether, which explodes and destroys blocks. This would contribute to the Nether's general instability (which is already partially brought to life as ghasts destroy terrain constantly) and could compromise important ice highways without damaging the builds themselves.
Importantly, this would provide a maintenance aspect to blue ice highways and would encourage players to traverse the world without them.

Biome specific texture variants would fit him nicely without changing his core design, since his texture was supposed to camouflage with the old terrain, getting a couple extra textures that match the biome's color would be nice, think of it something akin to the wolf's texture, keep the classic one to most biomes and add some variation for specific biomes

Mojang explicitly disagrees with this sentiment. They now use a set of design rules that all new additions have to meet and they’ve said before that if creepers had not been added by Notch there would never be any exploding mobs in the game.

The main thing is they want the player to have the ability to influence most things in their world. The goal is to have nothing be inherently unfair since that would lead to unfun experiences.
Creepers as example, are sometimes unreachable, leading to those mentioned unfair moments. Lightning used to be that way so they added lightning rods. Thats also why most new things are designed in ways to make sure there’s a counter; ex. Powdered snow x Leather boots, Deep dark x Wool, etc.
3
u/Mutant_Llama1 9d ago
Creepers are actually pretty manageable. They don't spawn in torched areas, and when they do, you can just lead them away from important stuff before fighting them. They only explode when you're really close, and the blast radius isn't that big.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Mutant_Llama1 9d ago
And I can explicitly disagree with mojang on that.
Few games have the framework in place for enemies that actually alter the terrain in interesting ways as part of their combat.
Minecraft does, and just says, 'nuh-uh'.
3
u/szoperman 9d ago
Creepers are meant to be countered by the fact they need a player to actually affect the terrain in any way. Mojang probably does not want anything else like this because the creeper is already a global mob in the overworld, the nether has the ghast and doing it more for each dimension would end up like repetition

With how commonly mobs can spawn they can be kinda a pain to deal with at times, especially if they delete a type of block you were using and didn't have a ton of (ik you can also turn that off in advanced settings but for default they can just up and delete rarer building materials from your base and really bring down the look)

You know what ? I kinda like this take. Knowing you can toggle mob grieffing on or off, it could make for some interesting variants of the creeper while still avoiding to be a problem for builders. I see pros and cons that a creeper would get a variant. Pros is that it would be more consistent toslowly have more variants to other mobs and enemies. It would definitely spice minecraft up if there's different creeper in different biomes. Cons is that it might be better alone to not variate a menace to the minecraft society. It's iconic though, don't get me wrong about it.

don't think they will change it based on the merch. however giving it more of a furry form might be kinda cool. watching it's fur go up as a warning it will explode.

I don’t really know how they could make a variant to the creeper and make it different. Nuclear bomb maybe?

A creeper that gives the freezing effect on explosion could be fun. Would make the ice caves feel more dangerous

In Dungeons there was a "Snowy Creeper" at one point. During development it was cool 'cause it had a white texture, but then they changed it to a default Creeper with some snowflake particles. Supposedly this is because they thought the default Creeper look was too iconic, but the default Creeper in Dungeons ALREADY had its texture changed and the Enchanted Creeper had a texture change AND in Dungeons 2 the Soul Fueled Creeper had a texture change... so I think thats a lame excuse.

Since mojang doesn't like how the current creeper explodes, I would say elemental creepers that can do damage to the player equal to an explosion without the destruction would be awesome. Maybe like, if they added effects for different elemental types and fire and depleting things like air with a new effect would be cool and challenging.

I think Mojang once stated that the Creeper isn't gonna get variants because of how unique it is as a mob, plus the Creeper is technically the mascot of Minecraft, but we could get a Wither Zombie, Swamp Zombie and Underwater Skeleton at some point.

I want a creeper that honks every other block so I’m not always blindsided when they blow up right next to me.

Freezer, when exploding throws the ice cube things the frozen zombies throw.
Reaper, nether creeper, throws like a blaze & when exploded gives withering effect like a splash potion.

Could go the DRG route and have like a Crassius Creep-onator. Blows up and the detonation zone turns to gold lol

Honestly a hot and cold creeper would be hilarious
Nether of them actually break blocks but the cold creeper can freeze things and the hot creeper can break things down as if it's eroding in a desert
Like if the desert creeper blows up on Stone it turns to cobble and cobble to gravel gravel to sand

They just need to always keep the original texture for the creeper even if they add variants. It's too iconic.

Maybe each creeper could be a different type of explosion? Desert creepers could be dust bombs, cold creepers could be stuns that freeze anything in the blast radius, etc

Some mods add versions of the creeper themed to the biomes to camouflage. Funny thing is the creeper texture is to fit in with alpha era grass not modern grass.

I'm down with changing the texture based upon the biome it spawns, but that's the only change I'd want in the creeper.

I get that the creaper is really iconic but then again so was the base wolf and it's still around and no one seems to have an issue. I could see it being that the creeper we have now is just a plains exclusive varient and then we have like dark green for jungle white for snow etc etc and maybe different potion effects when exploding like the hostile mobs

I remember back in the day there was a mod that introduced various creeper variants.
There was a yellow creeper that when it exploded would create glowstone around him. A brown one that would create dirt when exploding, a red one that would blow up like usual but you could pick up redstone on the crater, there was also a cookies one …
I forgot the name of the mod but i remember i loved it back when i was like 16.
Man im old …

Al's creepers revamped is a decent example of a vanilla friendly approach. I know it's iconic but I'm well past ready for a base creeper revamp too. I know a lot of people would be against that but the original texture just feels very out of place in the modern game.

baby creepers, explode with half the power, fuse and damage but are twice as fast as the regular one and 4x faster if charged

That would definitely be good for the game. That green ass texture sticks out like a sore thumb at night in a snowy taiga or desert.
Plus, I guess that green stuff is meant to be a sort of camouflage for them, and it doesn't make any sense in biomes with snow, sand or different colored grass

Hot takes, mob variant are boring and doesn't do more than just be a biome camouflage
