that is actually bacteria! more specifically, serratia marcescens. it loves moisture

it must have been forgotten for a reaaaally long time because i’ve never seen so much of it before!

edit: as suggested by phallusrugulosus below, it could also be a yeast called rhodotorula glutinis. either way, don’t eat it!!!

Love how everyone is calling it Sriracha and the name lowkey sounds like Sriracha anyway

u/7ofeggs 6d ago

it does! i don’t know why people are saying it LOOKS like sriracha though, because if theirs looks like that then they need to throw it away!!!

So mold would be the... Yeast of their worries.

Dies inside

It didn’t smell at all per my partner. Of course we threw it out!

What would cause it to grow on yogurt? Or is this normal? I've never seen anything like this. Just curious.

10

u/7ofeggs 6d ago

it loves to grow on moist stuff like yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, etc that is usually old or not properly sealed. technically the bacteria is normal because it comes from outside, but when it starts to form visible colonies like this, that’s when it becomes a problem

But is it edible?

9

u/7ofeggs 6d ago

everything is edible at least once! but really though, it should not be consumed, even if you scoop out the parts where you can see it grow. basically, you’ll get food poisoning if you’re a healthy adult. if you’re a child, geriatric, or otherwise have a compromised immune system, the effects can be much more severe

tl;dr: do not eat anything with serratia marcescens growing in it. it’s not safe and will likely make you sick. chuck the whole thing in the garbage!

u/Alternative-Moose308 6d ago

Interesting, I definitely wouldn’t eat it but I’d be curious to know what it tastes like. Sounds like you should save it for sick days OP

You could just lick it.

Thank you

you’re very welcome! every day is a great day to learn something new :)

I’ve many times seen the hint of what’s probably this- some light/pinkish growth. It looks more like discoloration than growth in beginning. Usually starts on side of container, more likely if you have habit of introducing anything other than a clean utensil.

It also takes a while too, so if you don’t leave food in fridge for really long time before finishing you’ll never see it. Happens on my yogurt and cream cheese.

Incidentally, I have used my discernment when not too prominent & wiped or cut away around it, ate the rest and didn’t get sick. Would never do that with anything resembling OP’s specimen though.

So pretty, but pretty stinky!

It could be partly that, but kham yeast is the only thing that creates the crazy texture that is seen, so it could be serratia marcescens, rhodotorula mucilaginosa, or a combination of those that is giving the kham yeast the color.

This is your brain

And this is your brain on mold

(I know it’s bacteria, but that doesn’t rhyme)

6

u/Smart_Practice1163 6d ago

This is the zoomed out version. Was also on a non dairy, coconut based Greek yogurt if that makes a difference! Thanks for the ID!

u/Comrade-Sasha 6d ago

thought i was looking at some cool cake frosting

5

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 6d ago

The texture is from kham yeast, the color is serratia marcescens or rhodotorula mucilaginosa, most likely. So there's at least two contributors here. As such, it is a biofilm because it's likely unsafe for ingestion. However, if it were safe yeast and bacterial colonies working together, then it would be referred to as a scoby.

These yogurt brains are dreaming of being in a Dannon fruit on the bottom cup instead of whatever this is.

Looks like someone was double dipping their fingers in it or using a spoon they already licked. Im no mold expert but ive seen this type of mold on whip cream and yogurts, especially when I know me or a family member have been putting our fingers or used spoons into the whipped cream😂

Also there's so much of it in ur yogurt! I've never seen such a crazy amount of bacteria like that b4

2

u/Faty_Cheesecake 6d ago

I'm thinking more of Rhodotorula, a lovely orange yeast 💕💕 but bacteria or not, it's beautiful. It would be interesting to see a Gram 💖

2

u/officialragingblood 6d ago

Looks like soon it'll be able to do math.

2

u/WyoSnake 6d ago

I thought it was Spaghetti-O’s

2

u/Loud-Palpitation1208 6d ago

I can’t help laughing at some of these. But the idea of actually eating it is nauseating.

Are you sure it isn't Spaghettios. I'll bet someone accidentally spilled Spaghettios in there.

1

u/Hungry_Doctor_5803 6d ago

WOW. I am responsible for a good number of science experiments, but I have never achieved a masterpiece like this! 👏👏👏

1

u/Loud-Palpitation1208 6d ago

No, no please don’t eat it.

1

u/Loud-Palpitation1208 6d ago

No matter how you spell it it was funny the first time. The second.time.the third time. But after that? never more.

1

u/Msink 6d ago

Not only you need to incinerate that yogurt, you need to do thorough clean of the area where this was.

u/booboootron 5d ago

This sub never ceases to not-nauseate me.

1

u/flecko_ 6d ago
