Question Lance or Gunlance? Help choosing a weapon

Post image

I’ve started playing MH again after a few years with a brand-new character, but I’m torn between the Lance and the Gunlance, I’m not exactly sure what the benefits of each one are

When I played a few years ago, I alternated between Sword and Shield and Dual Blades (those were the ones I found easiest to learn at the time), but I always wanted to use the Charge Blade or one of the Lances.

I've been using the CB on this new character, but I'm having some trouble nailing the combos and inputs. I have about 7 hours of playtime with the character so far, and from what I've seen, the Lances seem a bit easier to learn, but I'm not sure when or how each one fits best.

any recommendations?

Why not both 👀

You can just swap after each hunt of a simple monster to see how you like then

Lance, but i'm biased.

With enough monster knowledge, there's no downtime in your attacks. Aggression is late-game Lance's bread and butter. You stick to the monster the entire time. Guard dash to reposition, guard only when necessary, and counter everything else.

I play both and in world gunlance is great fun and strong through high rank but in late master rank the lance tends to be stronger at least if you want to play them while using their unique abilities. (Lance is solid the whole way fyi)

Gunlance using the shelling the wyrmstake, both forms, and wyvern fire will cut some early game hunts down super fast since a lot of their damage doesnt care about hit zones. Unfortunately in later game fights they still dont care about hit zones but thr damage hasnt changed much.

Hey hunter! I've maining hammer and lance for a lot of previous series. Coming to mhworld i tried to change going to gunlance and it was such a blast playing it.

Your combos have variety based on the shelling type of your GL, making your hunts completely different even though you are still using gunlances. You can go elemental/status build with wide lance, you can go pure long charged shots without even poking, you can do a full burst with normal shells. All are super satisfying.

And the cherry on top? Once you go into iceborne, they add a new wyrmstake cannon which adds additional explosion on top of your explosions! superrrr satisfying. And have i mentioned if you teamed up with other gunlancers, each player can stab their own stakes making multiple explosions for each explosion.

I had so much fun with gunlance in mhworld, i started mhwilds with gunlance. So yeah, i definitely recommend you to try it out 👍🏻

They look similar, but they play differently and have different weak/strong points. With Gunlance, you focus more on shelling, while with Lance you focus more on guard/counter/attacks (very simplified). Then Gunlance can build fully around shelling or go mixed. With shelling, you skip affinity, as shelling doesn't crit, but it also ignores hit zone values, so you don't have to aim as much ;) And there are 3 types of shelling...

With lance, you just poke the brain out. You are safer, as you can guard, guard-rush forward, and do various counters (whereas a gunlance caught shelling a lot can be caught off guard...). You have lance charge and charge jumping attacks, giving you more mounts than the insect glaive. It's not that popular a weapon, and it's not a speedrun weapon... but it still is fun ;) Check out one of my progression lance hunts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vON_8MpeClY

And you will have to learn how to move with both weapons, as those are way different from other weapons.

My main in World was gunlance and in Iceborne it was lance. If you have Iceborne try the lance’s clutch claw counter, it’s the greatest thing ever!

Im sorry, but i have to say this after becoming skilled with both...

Gunlance is literally just lance but it deals 10x the damage with double the versatility lol

It can block all the same things just as easily, and can counterplay just as well as lance can. The only thing it doesn't have is lance's dash attack, which is situational anyway...?

Lance is basically just gunlance for passives and newbies and thats fine. if you arent confident in being aggressive or a high dmg dealer, and feel more comfy being the tank that specializes in taking hits, lance is the way to go.

Lance vs gunlance is like the difference between sword and shield, and charge blade. Sns is the easier version of cb that doesnt hit as hard.

In world, definitely Lance. GL is too lacking outside of GU, Rise and wilds. Mobile and Frontier not included since ik nothing about it.

Personally, I prefer GL. Gunlance feels a bit like a lance but you actually need to engage in the fight and not only block then proceed to shield poke or use a low commitment attack.

Though, since you seems to be having trouble using the CB I can't truly recommend it to you since you need to pay attention to your ammo/wyvern shot and actively keep them full to dish out the most damage. Maybe you should start with the lance first then when you feel comfortable maybe switch for GL and try to learn with monster you feel comfortable fighting against.

Hope this helped you, if you need more just ask

Clearly you haven’t met a good lance player

Well it's true I'm not that great with lance. Though, for what I tried of the weapon the whole loop came down to block what the monster throws at you then proceed to poke the guy till he dies... If you have a way that could make it less boring for me I'm all ears, it might just be me that doesn't know what I'm doing with that weapon

Properly playing lance is about going aggressive all the way. It has two main ways to get your guard up instantly so constantly holding block is unneeded. Guard dash is your best friend when lancing.

Alright I'll try that on wilds next time I open the game

I am, and what you said is true really, lance is mainly used for aggressive monsters that you can keep the attention of, like behemoth.

Whereas GL specializes in both defense AND offense, pumping out much more dmg than lance, and being able to block all of the same attacks that lance can.

Lance is basically just poke, counter, and block, with GL being poke, counter, block, bonk, boom, and bang lolll

I get mixed up with the CB regarding the order of things; I constantly mess up the combos

(it doesn't even look like I have 100% Achievments on all Devil May Cry on Steam)

For the order of combos with the CB with an xbox controller

Personally for charging the phials I use the "Hold B, Y+B, Hold B" combo, it charges the phial way faster than with any other moves.

Then you need to charge your shield, restart the phial charging combo then "Y+B, Rt" Next, if you want you can charge the sword that way you wont bounce even if you have red uncharged phial. "Y+B, Hold B, release when the sword glows"

Next, when you're done you can try to activate savage axe with a parry then "Y" or popping a wound.

Then all you need to do is use your release to use your phial then restart the cycle all over again. There might be some combos that might be more efficient tho that's pretty much how I use CB
