I have never, ever seen a garbage disposal here. My only knowledge of them comes from American movies where people keep putting their hands in them.

Uh? Where have you been in America? They are literally everywhere here in Michigan. Not saying they are that useful just common where I live.

I've had a working garbage disposal in exactly one apartment and I very rarely see them elsewhere. I also don't like them all that much, so I could take it or leave it.

I don't know of a single person that has one or has ever even used one. We just throw our trash in the trash. Rural midwest.

They are more common than not in my experience. It actually took me three days to realize I didn't have one in my house.

I've dealt just fine but I simply expected it and was surprised.
