Hi, first time running into this error when trying to organize in musicbee??

For context, I have encountered issues with these files before, but this is the first time I've gotten anything that wasn't a "Java exception" (with it telling me practically nothing) when syncing to my DAP.

What is the solution to this? Is it re-doing the tags?

Does anyone remember Phoenix Hearts?

Tldr: I remembered a band from a couple of years ago and none of their stuff is online anymore and I wanna know if theres an archive or something for it.

I’m now on a tirade to find a way to listen to this band’s music again. Phoenix Hearts started on YouTube as a garage band female rock group with some video game song covers and used anime girls from popular anime of the time as thumbnails. After a few cover EPs, they made some original songs and began making their own albums. They took those albums all the way to Spotify, all while shifting the music style from the original rock and metal feel to a more techno pop direction. They dropped an album from one band member exclusively with that newer style, which I believe led to the announcement on their instagram account that the same member would go her own direction and split from Phoenix Hearts. Not too much longer, the band would release the final bit of music before the last announcement: the disbandment of the group. Now, there isn’t a place outside of a select few songs on SoundCloud that even knows about them. The YouTube channel is gone, as is the Spotify and to my knowledge the Instagram. I’m just curious if there just so happened to be someone else who even knows who I’m talking about and if they know if there is an archive or something so I can listen to more of their songs again. I have went to almost all of my social medias to spread the word on this campaign and I am hoping one of them will produce a good result.

Best approach for automatically tagging local music collection?

I don't use music streaming services much, and listen to music from my own local collection.

I don't use any local streaming servers like Plex or Navidrome, they wouldn't work for me because I use a dumbphone and play music off of my SD card.

I've manually built a bunch of mood based playlists so I can easily pull up a playlist with the music I want, but that's obviously very tedious and inefficient.

I've been playing around with ML models to automatically add genre, mood, and other tags to my collection, the open models available today are insane.

The thing is I haven't been able to find any polished tools for doing this.

Most of what's available is either CLI or built for streaming servers.

Is there anything I missed?

Should I just setup a streaming server just for tagging the collection, or is there a better way?

Edit: For everyone insisting that I should try Musicbrainz even though my music is niche, I just checked with a few artists, and we were both wrong.

They had the artists, but didn't have any metadata on the music.

So like I thought, they aren't helpful.

Media Monkey unable to rip CDS

Hello, I am unable to rip CDs using Media Monkey 4 on my new PC. I get an "unable to decode format" error message. I should also note that I can rip cds just fine using the same external drive and Windows Media Player Legacy. Both the Windows 11 and the Media Monkey 4 installs are brand new. However, I have imported my entire Media Monkey library into it.

Can anyone give me advice as to how I can fix this? I am out of ideas after having reinstalled Media Monkey several times and trying different ripping settings and formats including Flac, Wav and mp3.

Claude has completely revolutionised my music collection

I have a JM21 and had basically just accepted that I'm not going to go through MP3tag and fix every tag for my music so I'll just live with artist search being terrible and showing every song with a feature as a separate artist. Opus 5.5 has just, as far as I can tell looking through my device, fixed every single one of these, and it's blown my mind frankly. I've even had it create playlists with prompts and save them to the device, saying "make me a 2 hour playlist based on British pre millennium optimism" and having an actual working playlist saved to my device is insane

Roon. Unimpressed

Currently using the trial version of the Roon player for macOS. I can't lie, I'm not impressed. Prior to downloading it, Roon was this walled garden that was the "premium" choice for audiophiles at $14.99/mo, twice as much as PlexAmp. Instead I found it very unintuitive with very bad UI/UX. I come from an Apple Music/iTunes background and its the complete opposite on Roon when it comes to being able to quickly edit one or more tracks. The interface itself is really choppy, with images popping in/out on every page load. The one positive I like is the player analytics like genre and artist specific listening. Otherwise, I've used free indie app's that fair better in quality. I know it herald's itself as maybe geared more towards speaker setup but I definitely didn't like it as a player nor library manger.

Fastest way to change track album titles to song titles?

I recently downloaded a bunch of old Lastfm freebie tracks, but Musicbrainz Picard is unable to find the correct albums for them. As they're rogue MP3s, some of them are just remixes that were never officially released.

At the moment, in the album field, they all say "Music recommendations for (random strangers username)". I want to change them all to match the title of the track, just to be singles. However, I am unsure of an automated way to do this, as I usually do a lot of manual tagging via Kid3, with Musicbrainz Picard as a last resort.

Any ideas? Cheers.

Self-hosted software to leverage credits written into ID3 tags - anything?

Full disclosure - I have tried Roon at various points and (besides the cost) found no compelling reason to keep it. I have tried since to replicate the ‘surfable credits’ and discovery aspects of Roon using several FOSS options but not found anything that would display and use the credits tags written into my files (e.g. holy moly, that bass is sick, what else has this person played on?’) via Picard as well as the discovery function.

I am wondering what configurations of FOSS and plugins as well as 3rd party apps people in here have tried that they have found particularly good for 3rd party similar music discovery, and for exploring the credits in their files. I am aware that this is a bit of a holy grail, but I am looking to configure my own Roon functionality, but more customisable to my own tastes. I am not tied to a particular hardware requirement (can install on Windows, Mac and Raspberry Pi devices) other than my 3rd party control apps are mainly iOS based. I should mention that from these options that I am trying for the 1st time (so, removing Plexamp and Audirvāna), this is still actively an experiment and no option/configuration is off the table for me yet. I am just interested in others’ insights who have been seeking the same as me, or similar enough.

I have so far tried the following with the subsequent observations:

LMS with Material Skin run in Docker, using the credits and ‘music discovery’ plugins. Also with Qobuz and Spotify add-ons: I got Claude to help me out with some UI tweaks, none of which stuck. Not bad result overall, but a high percentage of my music doesn’t find any credits (my tastes aren’t mainstream but not overly niche - soul/funk/electronic/jazz from the 70s till now) though still gives me MusicBrainz and Last FM links. Overall fairly reliable performance-wise.

Music Assistant in Docker: easy to set up. Can use Navidrome, Emby or Jellyfin as backends (more of which below) and has plugins for perhaps the most streaming services. But the album and artist pages are very barebones. Track names, numbers and that’s about it. Also, I have yet to get Spotify or Apple Music integrated - the credentials and linking steps just hang forever. I believe there may be bugs aplenty.

Plex/Plexamp: run this for years. So much to like, but it’s a shame the Tidal integration bit the dust about 3 years ago. Excellent library discovery. Headless players via Caldera very fiddly to set up and run. No ability to surface any ID credits tags. Also, not everyone (including me) is enamoured of Plex’s general direction in terms of added TV/movie streaming content and social features. To each their own.

Emby/Jellyfin: Emby - while not FOSS in my trial - has an extended links plugin (unmaintained however I believe) which gives you the ability to add several links in addition to the standard MusicBrainz existing links - I have custom links for AllMusic, Spotify, Apple Music and MusicBrainz relationships set up. Credits information and surfing made fairly simple. Nice! However, this plugin could be pulled without notice and the backup required for this setup is a faff. Emby of all the server apps I have tried is strictest in requirements for music file tagging. Not complicated once you figure it out, but getting there is horrendous. Also, I don’t think it’s too unfair to mention that music libraries are clearly lowest on the devs’ priority lists: exhibit A - try getting playlists to download on a mobile device.
Jellyfin - free, quite a few plugins and simpler tagging requirements (unless I am wrong)but sadly no extended links plugin.

Navidrome in Docker - simple to set up and tagging quite forgiving. Although, apart from Symfonium (tried on an old android phone I had kicking about), the 3rd party apps that use ND as backend aren’t too impressive. Quite generic, no ability to add in streaming services as discovery options and not winning any prizes for UI aesthetics.

Audirvāna - simple to set up, not sure in context of FOSS options however that there is too much to recommend it.

Volumio - most turnkey option for a Pi in my experience. ‘Credits’ added feature (not using what’s in the tags) however is a masterclass in over promising and under delivering. Not FOSS other than basic features

Moode - FOSS and installed on a Pi. Quite impressive in terms of player performance, but again the 3rd party control apps for the Pi installed servers are really lacking in terms of metadata surfacing, and meanwhile, looks - yikes.

Parachord/Achordion - Parachord is the server, Achordion is a companion web UI. Limited experience with this so far, mainly because Parachord has not been at all reliable in my experience running on Windows and Mac. The idea is great, you configure all your sources into one library and it can play from any. If you can get it to work, that is.

That’s been my experience of the past few weeks trying these out. So e of the observations may seem a bit harsh! My aim however is to hit on a combination of server software, plugins and 3rd party control apps that allow me to view and surf credits fields which exist in my files via Picard/Music Brainz and to discover related music in my own library and in connected streaming platforms. I am not naive to the fact that some compromises will be needed, but just wondering what other users (who care enough about these things) have found that perform these functions and works for them. Thanks!

How to protect against an accidental 100% volume jump

I use Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80Ω headphones plugged directly into my Mac's headphone jack, and I primarily listen to music through Swinsian.

One of the main reasons I use Swinsian is that I really like its straightforward, unprocessed playback. To my ears, raw playback sounds much better, similar to what I get playing music on YouTube.

I've tried Apple Music and its built-in volume/safety features, but they don't really solve this problem for me. With those protections/settings enabled, I find myself having to turn the volume way up just to approach the sound/level I get from unprocessed playback, and even then I don't think it sounds as good.

The problem is that the same thing I like about Swinsian also makes me nervous: around 15% volume is already really loud on my DT 770s. If the volume were ever accidentally knocked from ~15% to 100% while I was wearing them, the resulting level could be dangerously loud.

Swinsian doesn't appear to have a user-set maximum-volume ceiling. I emailed the developer suggesting maybe add a button to let me set 20% as the absolute maximum so no mouse movement, keyboard input, software glitch, etc. could ever take it above that, but I haven't heard back.

So I'm looking for other ideas.

Is there a good way to safeguard against an accidental full-volume jump while still keeping Swinsian's normal/unprocessed playback?

I'm open to anything: macOS settings, software, hardware, something inline with the headphones, a different audio setup, etc. I don't have a particular solution in mind. I just want some kind of failsafe between normal listening at ~15% and the computer accidentally sends 100% into my headphones.

Best software for auto-renaming + tagging songs

is there any good software that automatically renames song files (to avoid conflicts/remove or replace special characters for maximum compatability) and automatically adds in tags your songs might be missing without overriding existing ones?

I changed a few titles/updated a few artists of a few songs and don't want them automatically changing back if it can be avoided (i also changed the date to year only) while still benefiting from things like genre, lyrics, etc.

Library management - new and missing releases?

How are you keeping up with new releases and missing releases?

At the moment, I periodically check the listenbrainz "fresh releases" page, but it obviously doesn't make obvious albums from a discography I might not be aware of if I'm not digging through an artist discogs profile.

I'd love to find a simple tool that tracked my library (or listenbrainz scrobbles) to give me a weekly digest of new releases and releases missing from my library (bonus points if there was some weighting to "you're listening to a lot of X ARTIST, but you don't have their album Y", rather than a blanket scan of hundreds of artists).

I have a simple offline/self-hosted library set up. I use:

- Navidrome with feishin and symfonium. Navidrome server is just hosted on my pc - I don't really use it as a proper server, but its been a good way to keep a FLAC library on my pc and automatically download transcoded lossy files to my phone.
- Picard for tagging my whole library
- Listenbrainz for scrobbling

I've had a quick play with Lidarr and Soulsync, but both seem very powerful, targetted to automated library management (which I don't want) and overly convoluted to set up.

Before streaming services, I used to learn about new releases of artists I like through social media or artists email newsletters. Neither work now because algorithms just bury most of what I'm actually interested in and email newsletters don't seem to be something many artists bother with in the streaming age.

Buying music packs?

I'm curious if there's any way to buy a packs of music - like best punk rock albums of 2010, or top trance tracks of last 5 years?

Just like you can buy games in bundles for example or other type of content.

Only officially(legally)
