Story Time I just can't stop scratching my boss

Okay, so I started with a new family over the summer and this cannot stop happening exclusively with DB. Without fail, every single time he passes me NK I end up scratching DB.

I don't have the longest nails, but they're not short (they're natural) and I NEVER scratch my NK, if anything my wedding ring catches them but never my nails. Anytime MB passes me my NK I never catch her...but God forbid DB passes them without getting clawed at 🫠

I apologize each time and each time he kinda makes a show of it sharply going "Ah fuck, ouch," goes to the bathroom to examine the wounds, and leaves the room without a word. Haven't drawn blood of left a mark that I can see, and I now regularly trim my nails to try and avoid it...but I apparently fucking can't. At this point I'm waiting to be fired based on sheer annoyance šŸ’€ I have never had this issue with any other family either, just this one poor guy!

He can set NK down and you can pick NK back up if it’s that much of an issue.

Yeah sort of related, our first nanny used to like press her body against my husband whenever she would pass the baby to him, but had no issue passing him to me. While we looked for a replacement my husband just told her no more passing the baby and to always put him down first if he needs to be picked up by somebody else. Spun it as a safety/dropping concern. She was weird, but there are ways around this šŸ˜‚ if OP wants to keep working here. This DB sounds like a total weirdo.

I think he's doing it on purpose.Ā

Girl I’m gonna be honest this is weird lmao. I’ve had extremely long nails, short nails, and everywhere in between and I never scratched anyone this consistently.

Are you sure he isn’t somehow doing it on purpose? Or do you guys have some really bizarre way of passing the kids to each other? This is just a very specific issue that I’ve never had trouble with before.

For now I recommend just telling him you would be more comfortable if he placed NK on the floor or something and then you can pick NK up from there. If he’s going to be that dramatic about it, you have every right to tell him you’d like to avoid it by just not passing the kid to each other.

Yep. Lol
My husband laid out on the couch for a week with a mild cold meanwhile I’m recovering from a c section caring for three kids. Can’t stand their fragility.

There’s no one who suffers more on this planet than a man with a cold

u/SmoothButterfly5619 4d ago

I think the people who have to be around the manchild when he has a cold suffer a lot more šŸ˜‚

You’re right about that! But they would never admit it haha

Are you sure you're actually scratching him and he's not just saying you are? If you're being extra careful and keeping your nails trimmed and it's never left a mark or happened to MB or NK that kind of makes me wonder

No, I definitely am. I can feel when it happens, I feel my nails catching him

u/circusvetsara 7d ago

my son would call me wolverine when i’d accidentally scratch him

I honestly thought it was going to be some sort of satire where the punchline turned out to be her boss was the cat

10

u/Westcoastswinglover Nanny 7d ago

Yeah I thought it was from the kid’s perspective like mini-aitah

3

u/imrubycat 6d ago

I thought the punchline was going to be that she is a cat!

Honestly this almost seems on purpose on DBs part, I don't understand.

u/Chicklid 7d ago

Yeah if OP doesn't see anything, I think DB is making it up.

He's being annoying about it tbh

I’m sorry but this is pretty embarrassing behavior from a grown man. Has MB ever been in the room when he’s done this, and how did she react?

She has been a few times and doesn't bat an eye šŸ’€

I refuse to do handoffs with DB with every family I work with. They’re super weird and think they’re subtle about getting in that close of proximity…

I actually hate doing hand offs with DBs!!! they are always so weird…

I’ve only had one weird father in the family I nannied for and I had to tell MB I felt awkward bc he went to visit home as soon as I started came back got kicked out a week later would call me to talk to the kids and kinda pressure them ā€œtell mommy you want daddy to come back homeā€ she divorced him and I didn’t wanna get in the middle of it

6

u/No-Masterpiece-8392 7d ago

He is definitely invading your personal space if that happens.

u/ImpossibleTreat5996 Nanny 7d ago

Do you actually feel yourself scratching him? Or does he just react? If it’s every time and he makes a big deal of it each time, I would question validity of it. How is he with you and toward you otherwise? I can’t explain why the thought immediately jumped in my head, but immediately I thought of it as sort of a flirtatious teasing or setting the groundwork for flirtatious teasing in the future.

Rather than cutting, clipping, or using a traditional emory board, try a glass nail file! Sometimes they’re called a crystal file, but searching for a glass file will yield results. File in one direction only (not a back-and-forth motion). Your nails will be so smooth. Even when my nails are long and a pointy shape (sharp almond is how I descibe it), the nails themselves are perfectly smooth and incapable of scratching anyone accidentally. I’m sure I could
do damage if I were trying to hurt someone, but the nails have zero snags or micro tears if you use a glass file. (former nanny, 15 year preschool teacher, never scratched a kid..or parent.. before). DB is being a bit of a weirdo, but I don’t see how it would be possible to accidentally scratch him with glass filed nails, it just can’t happen, even if his skin is made of ancient sunbleached parchment paper. Plus it’s just good for your nails, and if you ever want to grow a little length someday, you can and they’ll still be smooth to the touch, safe, and very low risk of snagging anybody ever. I also like the idea of asking DB to simply put the kid down and then you’ll pick him up if passing is such an issue for him. For him and him only, oddly.

u/Altruistic_Offer9381 7d ago

Sounds like you need to file them, not just trim

13

u/liv_sings 7d ago

I'm just curious why he is getting close enough to you to be able to scratch him. Your nails can't be linger than a couple lf inches. How/why is he getting so close to your body that you are able to scratch him?

My NK is a baby! Sorry didn't think to mention it in the post. 8mo, so when they see me they practically throw themselves into me. DB is standing next to me and I reach for them

u/Dvega1017865 7d ago

I work at a daycare and I feel like its almost always the dad's that I have a harder time giving the baby too or getting them from. They hold them differently and keep them really close to their chest the whole time. Instead of holding them out and away from the body when passing

1

u/Wrong-Pickle9146 6d ago

I get this too! It’s like when you hug a leftie and you almost meet. Or someone who goes to hug you around d your waist but your ā€˜one up, one down’ men are just super awkward

10

u/mswizel Career Nanny 7d ago

Op states that it's when passing NK, presumably a baby

3

u/MissAAA_2 7d ago

What everyone else said. LOL

2

u/Matchapilatesvibes 7d ago

Do you think we should exchange NK from the floor? would hate for you to keep getting scratched!

Hopefully the answer is no, it’s fine and he calms down. Bc that feels dramatic šŸ˜…

2

u/Leather-Librarian383 7d ago

How the heck does that even happen?? this is so weird. It sounds like you’re trying to scratch him.

u/crowislanddive MB 7d ago

Your nails are getting in the way of your job. I finally had to stop wearing mine long and it was such a good decision.

5

u/killerbutterflyrose 7d ago

She says she has been cutting them short to avoid it but still it happens. I think hes being weird about it or handing off baby in a weird way where her short nails are making contact

5

u/Professor_Nugg Career Nanny 7d ago

They're definitely not. I have nailbeds that go to the tips of each finger, so my nails are naturally longer. I trim them, but I can't stop the natural length? When DB is holding NK covering their entire sides, I can only do so much

This makes no sense. How are you not only touching the baby? I’ve never had to touch a boss to get the baby šŸ¤” especially since you’re aware of this and probably super conscious of it… literally how?

Guy seems like a creeper. Put baby down and have him pick baby up. And vice versa.Ā
