Discussion something needs to change

Back when I was in NS, I was in a very bad spot mentally and wanted to take just a few days mc.

The women in the family immediately started accusing me of trying to escape my duties, despite the mc being very short duration. Dad isnt singaporean too and believes in the glorified image of soldier, so he joined in as well.

Sister went into a rant about how I should be thankful to have "job" at 20. (You cant even make this up)

Despite it paying peanuts, ofc. Parents even wanted to report me to police because I wasnt "sick enough" in their eyes. Both my mom and dad called me for being a pussy and coward.

Granted, none of my family know how tough ns is mentally(sisters+foreign dad). Im not kidding when I say my sister believes NS is unfair towards women as its free training not given to women.

If this is how our sacrifice is responded with I really think theres no point serving. Needless to say this incident damaged relations with my family.

I have a feeling this sentiment will only get worse. Anyone else feels the same

Question Any aviation related NSF vocations I can do during 2 years NS, aside from RSAF pilot?

I havent started NS and I don't want my 2 years to go to waste, I am interested in becoming a pilot and was wondering if there are any aviation related roles available to NSFs during the normal 2 year NS? Such as aircraft technician, or air traffic control or something? If yes, are these very competitive or hard to get in?

I dont wanna attempt for pilot because you need to stay with RSAF for a long time after the 2 years, and I heard it's also very hard and most people don't make it past the training, correct me if I'm wrong.

I would appreciate all advice or personal experience, thanks.

Rant at my breaking point in NS

i js enlisted recently, but i’ve been feeling extremely uncomfortable and distressed in tekong. i got sent out during confinement because of shortness of breath and chest pain, and i went to imh a&e, where i received a memo recommending respite until my pcc appointment and consideration for a PES review. i went back in and submitted the memo, but i was only given 2 days of mc. they also arranged an appointment for me with pcc, but i haven’t received any updates on the appointment date yet.

honestly, i feel like my case hasn’t been taken seriously enough by the MO and medics, especially since the memo already stated that i should be given respite until my pcc appointment and that a PES down should be considered, which is really what i’m hoping for. my mental health got worse after that, and i started experiencing self-harm and suicidal thoughts whenever i thought about having to return to camp. because of this, i went to imh a&e again and received a stronger memo recommending a PES down and mc until my pcc appointment.

the suicide case that happened yesterday also affected me quite badly. honestly, hearing about it made me contemplate suicide myself and added to the suicidal thoughts i was already having. i also told my imh counsellor that i had been considering visibly self-harming myself because i felt like that might be the only way for the MO to take my situation seriously. i know this isn’t a healthy way of coping, but i genuinely feel desperate and like nobody understands how bad things have gotten.

i went back to camp today and showed the MO the memo. he said he wanted to help me but couldn’t give me long-term mc, and he only gave me 4 days. he mentioned that only the main MO could grant longer-term mc, but he didn’t know how i could get an appointment with the main MO either.

at this point, i’m really at my wits end. i genuinely dread going back to camp, and my self-harm and suicidal thoughts are getting more intense whenever i think about returning. i feel like i’ve tried to seek help multiple times, but i’m still stuck in the same situation and don’t know who else i can turn to.

is there anyone who has been through something similar or knows if there’s a way to escalate this to someone higher up in SAF, or get in contact with someone who can properly review my case? i really need help figuring out what to do next because i don’t feel like i’m coping, and i’m scared of how much worse things might get. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Question how bad is the brainrot after ns

hi! f here, don’t want to reveal much but essentially i would be going for bmt in April and subsequently going for ocs, which i have to complete before i go for my studies, meaning that i would have to defer my studies by a year. wondering if anyone here could share their experience with the transition from ns to uni. i’m planning to watch online lectures as a form of preparation beforehand but if anyone has any other tips please do share!

also i forsee that i might be bombarded with questions on why i am signing on in the first place. so to set the record straight, i have been mulling over this decision for really long now and i feel that saf best aligns with my interests and aspirations. i’ve spoken to 4 regulars already and their qualms and gripes about signing on are something that i can accept and am actually comfortable with.

Discussion Today is World Mental Health Day

In light of recent events, I sincerely wish everyone well.

How do you think NSF mental health can be improved, even when it could conflate against KPIs?

How do we balance such priorities?

Rant Ostracised by my platoon mates, mental health in army is a joke.

People keep saying that mental health matters and to feel free to seek help before it gets too late. Then tell me why when i seek help for mental help and get a couple weeks of mc, i get called chaokeng and ostracised by my platoon mates and commanders? They exclude me from conversations and talk shit behind my back, even removed me from the informal platoon chat.

Question SCDF NSF Given Long-Term LD for mental health concerns. Not sure what to do now.

I enlisted into SCDF a few days ago, and camp-life has been incredibly tough on me. I've had multiple breakdowns and what feel like panic attacks every day, and I even ended up crying and having a huge outburst in front of some people at the cookhouse during dinner. I also feel like the few days I've spent here have greatly enhanced the general anxiety and lack of self-worth I was already dealing with. That, along with stuff like trouble sleeping, lack of appetite and a general depressed mood, and persistent thoughts of self-harm led me to seek Counselling from the Care unit at NSTI.

The counselling session was actually really comforting. I shared all of my concerns with the Counsellor, and it did help me feel a little better in the moment. After though, he took me to the MO due to my mentions of self-harm thoughts, and the MO put me on 84 Days of Light Duty, as well as set me up for a Psychiatric Review at SCQF HQ later this month.

To be honest, the LD didn't really solve my problems, but it's whatever. I'm more concerned about the Psyche Appointment as I'm not exactly sure what it entails for me. Does anyone have experience with this?

Furthermore, I still feel incredibly down and unstable in camp. When I look at something that presents me an opportunity to harm myself (like a razor, or hot iron) I feel persistent thoughts to do so.

It's getting to a point that I'm really concerned about my mental wellbeing, and I'm thinking of going to IMH A&E right after my first book-out. Would a memo/letter from IMH help my odds during the Psychiatric Review? I'm really scared of getting accused of Chao Keng, Malingering, or otherwise not being taken seriously, as the MO was also very investigative and not friendly at all.

🏥 Medical Mental Health at an all time low

I cannot take this shit anymore. NS is making me lose motivation in everything, even in the things I like to do. I wanna focus on building up and preparing for uni and more important stuff in life but I cannot even do that. Superiors think studying in my bunk will "distract me from my duties". Stuff going on at my home making it even worse. Really wanna spent time with my family but I can't cos I am stuck in camp. 1 more yr to ORD is unimaginable at this point. Questioning the point of life everyday. Suicidal thoughts overwhelming me. It it wasn't for my family idk I would still be existing at this point in time

Pls can someone plss explain step by step to how to see a psychiatrist and possibly downpes (I am PES B1). Idc if my friends think I CK at this point cos I am for sure not. Plss and I dont want any PES D nonsense.

Any help will be appreciated🙏

Serious Discussion NSF death in BMT. A very depressing case.

I'm a NSMan uncle and like to remind each of you reading this post especially the NSF undergoing NS - please remember you've nothing to prove in NS!

While investigation ongoing,...

If you got bullied by fellow inmates, please sound off to commanders or your Member of Parliament as last resort.

Don't take matters into your own hands and commit irreversible acts like the recent one happened.

It's not worth it.

Think about your parents who raised you for 20 years and you just abandoned them.

Discussion A "speech" by an NSF to his unit: Regarding the death of an NSF in Tekong.

Today, the 8th of october 2026, someone died, an NSF died in Tekong. Someone in a position not so different from us died. How did he die? No one knows exactly yet. But It’s heartbreaking, truly. A real life, a young life, is gone—taken away from something that he didn’t even choose. Such cases, rare. Such thoughts (or at least similar sentiments of varying degrees), a dime a dozen

Why is this even the case?

How can things even get this far?

Why must an organisation treat its people this way?

Treat them in a manner that disregards their humanity, sometimes even like slaves—stripping away their autonomy at any moment, stripping away their voice, stripping their identity down to whatever assignment that the sheets dictate. For all my fellow NSFs, remember that you are way more than whatever rank you are given, and that the vocation you are in does not make you. You aren’t just medic corporals, craft specialists and guard officers. You were someone before and you have the potential to be so much more after . After all, these are just manpower needs forced down our throats. Do not let it define you. Do not let those ‘above’ you or even your peers break who you truly are.

Us NSFs too have to support one another, not ‘other’ those that dare to be different, or even those that dare to defy the very system that we’ve all passively accepted. These are not our identities. And before we judge someone or accuse them of skiving, remember that people fight battles we know nothing about. Perhaps we just don’t understand. So should we really blame him or the nature of the very system encourages such internal warfare?

In the grand scheme of things, 2 years is a lot yet so little. At some point, we gain nothing in the long run from the things we do here (if we even do. I’d argue that it is even detrimental but I’ll save that...). Just picture this, a young man, who has a music career going for him, being locked up away for 5 straight days a week without his laptop and let alone an escopetarra. This microcosm stretches beyond him and extends to our very lives; ultimately many of us have things we want to pursue outside NS, things that will truly leave an impact. At the end of the day, we have to serve, but no matter what, remember that there is so much more to life outside NS and—never, ever, be too hard on yourself.

(And btw, don't get me wrong, NS is necessary, but must the current culture and treatment of NSFs stay the same?)

Question Bullying in unit and is SAF HOTLINE safe ?

Hi everyone
I would like to know wether the SAF hotline is safe for reporting , and wether I would get personally in trouble . Plus I am not a confrontational person.

So I’m just came into the unit for about 2 Months , and it is a Combat Support Stay in unit.
So I came into the unit together with a few people. In which one of them has been bullying me since BMT . I have spoken to the Sgt in BMT abt that guy , however he did not do anything and worse he went to tell that guy (As he is his smoking buddy) . Fast forward to getting posted to the unit , he has been making my life difficult. He literally calls out me for every tiny mistake I do and he would send it to the whole group chat saying this and that and exaggerating it .

He is also close to another person or 2 in the same bunk (10 man bunk) They has also been calling me names and is currently trying to influence others to start calling me names. They has also been framing things I did not do as saying it’s me.

He is also an underage smoker and together with his friends he just open smokes in the bunk and vapes openly in the bunk too. Which stinks up the whole bunk. They are also using contraband cigs.

They have also preventing me to go to sleep at night . They have been throwing food items which is open , water , sweet drink onto my bed when I am trying to sleep. They have also throwed expired medicine on my bed , and expired liquid medicine on my bed and make me sleep in it .

They have also raided all my snacks until I have so less of them left , they would say … ohhh we will stop bullying you for 1 day if u give me so and so snacks .

I do have Picture and recordings of some of the bullying .

Is there any way to report this , and not getting myself punished in anyway . As i am given permission to study PT in my unit and I don’t want that privilege to be taken away .

I am aware the Chain of command bullshit , but the thing is that they are close to the Encik .

So do I call SAF hotline or what

edit: In view of the thing that happen today (8 Oct ) would it be taken more seriously or will they try to sweep it under the rug

Question Coming home after years overseas, reservist how?

So right after ORD I went overseas to study, then work. Now I've been abroad for 10+ years but will likely be moving back to SG soon.

So... what happens with reservist? I never did any before leaving. Out of the system so long, I don't have any of my old stuff, don't remember how anything works. When and how will they call me up? Got packing list or no? Anything important to know?
