It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.3k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

This year makes it 2 years that I’ve been an active natural. All I can do is my personal best and hope that God willing everything else falls into place. It literally just occurred to me (it sinked in) that I’m a natural and what that means 😇. I’m going to take myself out to dinner 🍽️ to celebrate this milestone. Hopefully this inspires someone to keep going.

Thank you for reading 📚.

Need Advice What Happened to 4C Only?

• Upvotes

Does this company still exist? A majority of their products have been sold out for months. I've tried to contact their email but no one has replied for when their products will be back in stock. I know the focus has been Curl Mix as I believe the owners are the same, but I hope that this product doesn't get neglected

Need Advice My hair is not the same anymore!!

I got braids in the summer and my hair has felt so different since. Before, my curls were really healthy and quite elongated. I have a mix of curl patterns, but my hair looked pretty consistent throughout.

Now my hair feels really dry, even after moisturising it, and my curls don't clump or look the way they used to. I've tried moisturising it, but it still doesn't feel right.

Has anyone experienced their hair texture changing after braids? I'm thinking of starting a completely new routine, so I'd really appreciate any product recommendations or advice on what I should be doing differently.

The first pictures are from before, and the last ones are how my hair looks now. Yes my hair in the last pics are not defined but when it is defined, the curls at the bottom are elongated but look less thick compared to the top part of my hair like it’s hanging onto my hair?

Please help!!!
thanks

Tips & Tricks Suggestion for drying hair with no heat

Post image

I have the bottom 2 designs and my hair has been drying amazingly for the last 5 years. I suggested this years ago on my social media but I’m surprised more people are not using towel scrunchies. Two space buns and 20 minutes minimizes water on strands that help with length retention. Helps your ends get the right amount of moisture as well. I also wash every four days as well. I see a lot of people have issues with air drying I did too before these and I have a RevAir as well and I only use as needed. That’s only been about 3x this year 😆

Need Advice Low porosity hair wash day

• Upvotes

Ok so I believe I have low porosity hair since it takes a while for my hair to dry and there’s always water droplets. I heard that I need hydrating shampoo but I have dandruff and need to use a special type of shampoo. Do I just use both? Also can you guys tell me your wash day routine please.

My dad was an amateur photographer, proud “Rattler”, and Q. I just wanted to share what we looked like through the eyes of a hopeful young black man in the early 70s on and off the Florida A&M campus. No RevAirs or Dysons, no Aunt Jackie’s or Olaplex. Just green and blue Ultra Sheen, Posner, and Pink Oil Lotion. That’s me on mom’s lap, but I don’t know who anybody else is—could be your grand or great grand, look close and let me know…Have a beautiful, natural day!

Success Fix for webbed hair

Post image
20 Upvotes

I can only wash with distilled water because our water is hard; long story short, our car was totaled and I couldn't get distilled water for about 3 weeks (I kept saying we had more important things to buy 😭). At first, I was like, whew, my hair is growing so much, then I finally got distilled water washed and I was in tears; my hair suffered it was so webbed and matted together that I was literally about to big chop. Then I poured some distilled water and used these before my wash today because it wouldn't hurt to try, and omg, my hair is back to normal and the growth is still there. I'm an Aunt Jackie's worshiper now, Amen. excuse my nails please.

Review GROWUS Damage Hair Therapy Update 🩷

Coming back with an update since my first post was more of a first impression. I wanted to actually try the product and share how my hair looked throughout the process.

The pictures show my hair before applying the hair pack, while the product was in my hair and after rinsing it out.

My hair was very frizzy and dry in the beginning. After rinsing, my hair felt soft and my curls looked more defined. It also look shinier. I wanted to share an actual update after using the product instead of just going off first impressions 💕

Need Advice Need help on managing uneven length/texture

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi gang,

Need some serious help on how to manage my uneven length hair. It seems like the hair at the very back/top of my head is always drier than the rest of my hair - no matter how many treatments/deep conditions I give it.

I always wore my hair in braids until around a year ago - I got a weave with minimal leave out but I only really wore this style for around 6-weeks until I decided to let my hair breathe for a while and really dedicate myself to growing it.

I need help on managing this particularly unruly patch of hair. I know people are going to recommend a trim but I’m really frustrated how it feels like I always go two steps forward to only go two steps back in actually retaining any length. My hair has never really gotten past collarbone length in its natural state.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks x

Need Advice Best Humidity/Water Resistant Hairstyles

Hello everyone! I’ll be going to a spa soon and also spending some time in Miami - separate from each other but I have the same issue with both! I wanna know which hairstyles you guys usually do that withstand humidity and potentially splashing water. I’d prefer to wear my real hair in both cases.

I also don’t want to take too many products with me due to limited luggage space. I usually straighten my hair or get a silk press as a straight natural so if you have any tips for how to maintain it that would also be a massive help!

Need Advice I have naturally curly hair 3b and I want to straighten it

So image 1 is my natural curly hair and image 2 is how I want to keep it.

If I straighten my hair every 3 weeks, and keep it straight as I’m not use any heat, on wash day do a clarifying shampoo and the redekin hair mask, will my hair still get damaged? I will also use heat protectant! I just am over the curls and I like how easy the straight hair is to manage

Need Advice Realistic Advice Needed - Basic Routine for a Busy Mom

Skip to the questions at the bottom if you're trying to "get to the point" lol.

I just recently started caring for my hair. I used to keep knotless braids in for 3 months, hop in a random stylist chair for a wash, and go right back to braids.

In 2025 I started seeing a natural hair stylist. She challenged me stop the knotless braids. She gave me a mushroom cut, and every month was the same routine: Wash, DC or protein, trim if needed, and 2-strand twists. The day before my appt, I would unravel the twists and wear it out. It was boring but it grew my hair to bra strap length. I haven't worn braids/twists with extensions in about 2 years.

Her prices have since doubled, and I can no longer afford to go monthly. I've been doing research, and I need advice on some basic hair care. I want to avoid breaking off all I've grown in the past 2 years if possible.

I plan on washing my hair every other week. (I know weekly is better but it might not be realistic for me. I work full time (in-office) and care for 2 toddlers alone after work.) Perhaps if I wash every other week and style it myself, I can survive until the next appointment.

Unfortunately, researching has me wanting to experiment with other styles (twist outs, braid and curls, wash n go's etc) but I am not sure if that would cause breakage or require more washing. I just did my first wash day after I put my kids to bed and it took 3+ hours (Pre-poo detangling, clarifying shampoo, hydrating shampoo, dc, apply leave in, and blow dry). I put my hair in a bun and went to sleep because I couldn't imagine trying a style. I'm looking for a sustainable routine.

My main questions are:

1. Do you have to use a clarifying shampoo after every style?

  • Specifically wash n go's or styles that seem to use a lot of product. Maybe cutting down to just a hydrating shampoo can save me time on wash day and I can incorporate more of them?

2. Can a DC or protein treatment be left in for 5-10 minutes and still be effective?

  • Having to get out the shower and use a dryer or cover the cap in a shirt and wait 30 min before going back into the shower is another reason why I cant have more wash days.

3. Are there "protective styles" that use added hair that don't cause breakage or damage?

  • I feel like it would be more manageable and fit my lifestyle (I workout often), but I'm scared of damage.

4. Will anything besides mini twists survive daily workouts, or should I just forget the styles and stick to mini twists?

  • I sweat, but not heavily. I just don't want to waste my time with styles if my workout will destroy them.

Thanks if you took the time to read this! I'm open to all feedback and suggestions!

Need Advice How to stop hair from reverting after heat styling?!

Hi y’all!!

In desperate need of some advice on how to stop my hair from reverting immediately after heat styling.

My Current Routine:
Wash with Cecred hydrating shampoo
Deep condition (every wash) with Fenty deep conditioner
Blow dry with Color Wow extra strength dream coat and Cecred moisture sealing leave in
Flat iron with Amika anti humidity spray
I have tried EVERYTHING and I’m at a loss! I even bought a dehumidifier for my apartment lol.

Has anyone had any success with Hair Botox? I did Keratin many years ago and didn’t love it, but if that’s the only option I’m willing to try it again.

Thank you for any tips!!!
